what is a shell notification icon?

When I created a new message just now, by right clicking an address and choosing 'write a message to this address' I got an error box stating 'cannot create shell notification icon.' I got that error once earlier but wasn't sure what application had created it. -- Dwight A. Corrin 1201 W River
