Thanks for the mail. DO you mean that even my legitimate mails are caught
as spam because I have not taught bayes more ham against spam. (the ratio
of my ham:spam training is 2:100)

password protected account deletion

2004-10-11 Thread K. Shantanu
Hi,
I have an old account on The Bat! whose password I have forgotten. I do
not need that acount, nor its mails anymore. How can I delete that account?
Whenever I try to delete that account The Bat! asks me for password.
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Shantanu

While this isn`t perhaps the solution you were looking for, you may
find Mailwasher to be of use.

It has some great filtering options, and if you can live with the
occasional bug in the old betas, I have them available for download.

They have no account limit, unlike the more established commercial
demo, but they are quite old now... There are only a couple of bugs
that spring to mind, and one of them is quite easily avoided (you
simply clear the display before re-checking for new mail). The other
bug (IIRC) can manifest itself when you have quite a lot of mail to
check (ie. 500+) where it can crash almost randomly but in a system
friendly way (ctrl-alt-del then re-run the program). This can be
avoided by downloading and wiping the spam in batches of, say, 400
at a time by pressing a big friendly "stop" button :-p

Mailwasher will download the email headers and a variable number of
lines of an email to enable you to preview the content, apply any
filters you have set up to mark items for deletion / blacklisted, and
delete anything you don't want from the server direct. It will then
load your regular email program to fetch the mail as normal, once the
clutter has been removed.

They're available at www.phoenixbbs.co.uk along with my full blacklist
and some rather useful pre-configured filters.

The blacklist consists of several bulk spam hosts, and a lot of
country codes ie. .biz .tw

My filters are for a later version of Mailwasher, but should (I hope)
be backwards compatible with earlier versions.

My filters aren't quite as effective nowadays due to new avoidance
techniques used by spammers, but I was managing a ~97% success rate
at one point for auto-markup, getting 550-600 emails per day.

You have to train for both spam and ham, "spam" being junk mail, those
you don't want to see; "ham" is your legitimate mail.

It takes about 100 mails of each - hopefully you have much more
legitimate posts - to train BF usefully. It can be done with much less
but the more you have the better it gets; it may also be a good idea
to leave it in training mode.

You definitely must not only mark your junk as junk, but also mark your good
mail as "non-junk". Bayesian method works not on the letters, but on the
difference between two sets of them.

Ok I guess I cannot delete mails directly from server w/o downloading

Well, on one account I get only spam and maybe real ham in 1000. I
selected all mails and marked them as junk (around 200 of them) in
last few hours. I am using the bayesfilter 1.5.6

Then I created another account (this) and downloaded mails. I found
out that all the legal mails even ones from the The Bat! list today
were going into "Junk mail" folder. What is the reason of this?
What do I do now for it?

What do you mean by "not get THEM in future"? Did you receive one and same spams
every time? If so, it is simpler to just create "selective download" rule. For
"few" spam mails daily it may be enough.

If you set up bayesit! filter (note, that there are two filters with a big
looking like names: bayes filter and bayesit. I mean bayesit), it may create the
set of regular expressions based on the difference in headers between your junk
and non-junk letters - this set will be auto-updatable and will allow you to
REALLY stop download junk and kill them on the server.

However, the other side is that when you using selective download filters you
will, actually receive about +20-+50% of traffic - since The Bat! will receive
only headers first, filter the letters, and finally receive the filtered mails
(again, with the headers).

To get Mark as Junk to work you need to install an anti-spam plug-in
like Achim Winkler's BayesFilter (http://www.lkcc.org:8500/index.php).
After a short time of training it will recognize most spam messages
you receive. And that's the operative: *messages you receive*!

TB will still download the messages from the server but you won't
see (most of) them. I think there's currently no solution to
automatically delete spam on the server without downloading. You may
use the Message Dispatcher to look at the headers on the server and
then delete them manually. Or you can set up elaborate filters for
selective downloading.

From my experience it takes more time if you invoke the Dispatcher or
Selective Downloading than to download all mail and let the plug-in do
the dirty work.

Hi,
I am trying the latest version of The Bat! profesional. I have a question
on spam mails. There are a quite a few spam mails I get daily. If I mark
them as Junk, will that ensure I don't get them in future? If possible,
I would like The Bat! to delete them without even downloading them.
Is it possible and if yes how do I go about it?

Thanks.
