After hours of trying things, I finally deleted the affected folder
and recreated with a different name, as using the same name just
"adopted" the problem again.

So, you think it has something to do with ALL MAIL?

I just wonder why only this one folder was affected, and was still
working fine the day before.

It was definitely TB causing the problem, not Gmail.
When TB was turned off, I could delete files from that folder just
fine in Gmail. The moment TB was turned back on, all the deleted mails
from that one folder popped right back in, on TB and Gmail.
