Unable to enter cyrillic characters (KOI8-R) in new message

I downloaded The Bat 30-day trial version and tried, unsuccessfully, to enter a message in cyrillic (KOI8-R). I tried changing languages and encodings and it still only gave me Latin English characters. Is there a step-by-step procedure to accomplish this? I've looked in the online FAQ section
