How to change this white color to different color, similar to

2004-07-14 Thread Douglas Hinds

Hello Mary and others following this thread,

In response to the message Mary Bull sent regarding Time to Upgrade
(Was: One caveat about Folder View Settings in v. 2.11.02 [was Re:
Time to Upgrade?])

Thanks for the note re the v. 2.12 release. As you'd said earlier,
it was about to be released.

DH These are undoubtedly Moldavian terms g.

MB No. PCWSmileys are a feature that Leif had the help of 9Val to work
MB out, and I was among a half dozen or so early beta testers on them,
MB which soon mushroomed to many dozens, as the interest in using these
MB increased--most of the use being on tbot.

MB The term Roguemoticon is from Dierk, who offered it as the name for
MB the new pictures for use in signatures that Leif also wrote the code
MB for, based on 9Val's original Smiley code, as I understand it.

MB The RitLabs programmers have now modified that code such that the
MB Roguemoticons appear (as a user's option) in the headers.

MB Note: I changed the subject line (which you changed back) to
MB conform to the recently given Moderator request to make subject
MB lines as specific as possible

MB Allie had recently (just yesterday) reprimanded a friend of mine on
MB this list for just such a catch-all subject as yours, when the
MB discussion turned to a specific part.

Maybe he needs you to remind him to reprimand me. (But since he
participated in this thread with Time to Upgrade as the subject,
maybe his understanding of the subject subject is similar to mine).

MB I was addressing a specific part, an annoying folder view settings
MB behavior, that I understood, from reading the tbbeta list, had been
MB cured in a beta release.

You sure did, within the context of the subject I posted. Your
focusing on one aspect of it didn't change that.

MB Full release v. 2.12 has just been announced as out this evening. You
MB might like to go to the RitLabs site and read about it.

Naw, I'm just downloading it.

Re[4]: Spaces After Periods

2004-07-14 Thread admin
I always thought it was two after a full stop, and one everywhere
 else.

Depends on the 'typing school'.

In the days of non-proportional, i.e: fixed width, fonts it was deemed
better to place two spaces after full-stops (periods).

This however looks ugly in the days of proportional fonts. Thus one
space is recommended in that situation.

Since some email clients and some users of adjustable email clients
set the email to be displayed in fixed width font (usually people who
like ASCII art signatures) (??!) then they are getting one space in
the situation that started this thread.

Typographically, the white space should be kept to a minimum in close
type - so I am happy with one space always.

X-Rogue header is better than roguemoticon in signature

2004-07-14 Thread Roelof Otten
Hallo TBUDL,

A new version of TB was released among us. It supports Roguemoticons
(for more info see: http://www.pcwize.com/thebat/rogues.php ) and
  loads of extra smileys.

As I prefer my smileys the old fashioned way, I'm not that
enthusiastic about the additional smileys, but I do like the
roguemoticons. It's nice to see your contact's face in the header.

However, as I'm a plain text type and don't use the RTV except for
testing purposes, I'd prefer everybody placing their roguemoticon in
the X-Rogue: header and not in the signature, since the latter won't
show when you're using the plain text viewer.

Okay, how do you insert the X-Rogue: header?
You can do that with this macro:
  %SetHeader(X-Rogue,:your_handle:)%-
in your templates for this and other tb-lists.
However, only the macro won't do the trick.
TB'll say: 'Hey, that's no RFC822 header', so you'll have to define
  it as such:
Options - Preferences - Messages - Message headers - 'Add'
Now you'll get a pop-up to define the header
Display as: X-Rogue (or whatever, it isn't very important)
RFC header: X-Rogue
Uncheck: 'This field is an address list' (because it isn't)
Check: 'Allow this field to be edited in the message editor'
Uncheck: 'Display this field in the scrollable part of the header pane'
Now you're done and every TB-user can see your lovable face when
  (s)he's installed the roguemoticons.

And now I end this message with the plead to everyone to add their
face to the roguemoticon gallery and add an X-Rogue: header.

A copy of this message will be sent to tbot.

I realize this, empathize and appreciate the efforts you're making at
cooperating.

However, there's no precise measure of the adequacy of a subject. I
can only provide basic guidelines which I have. See my response to
Maggie's 'trout not accepted' message. Another problem is that with
every basic guideline there can be valid exceptions.

Time to upgrade? ... this subject seems to be about the asking of a
question of whether or not it's time to upgrade TB!. This is what
Douglas discussed. There's nothing really to break down or specify in
the subject especially since he really didn't have anything specific
to discuss on the matter. So it can stand by itself and be adequate.

We know that such a thread will likely involve brief mention or
explanations of new features.

Of course, if a sub-thread begins focusing on a particular issue, then
fine, change the subject, but our threshholds tend to be different. I
don't usually change the subject until the 2nd message that is
focusing on a new subject. If I abruptly change the topic, then I
start a new thread.

IOW's exercise judgement.

Now, things may not go smoothly because of a variety of reasons. We
are all different, with different opinions, temperaments and
thresh-holds etc. I plan to moderate only those subjects that IMO,
fall significantly short of adequately reflecting what the discussion
is about.

Douglas seems sensitive about subject hijacking. This is a side of
Douglas we'll have to get along with or come to terms with. You change
the subject and he changes it back. Interesting and I'll leave that to
you both to sort out. I don't see the need for my direct involvement.
I can only give advice.

TB! 2.12.00 : Default addressbook problem

2004-07-14 Thread Andrew Cauthery
Greetings TBUDLers,

I have TB! set up with two Account Groups, one for me, one for my wife, with separate
shortcuts to the two groups using the command-line parameter /FOCUSU=, and in both
Groups' Account Properties the default addressbook is set to default.

Under 2.11.02 (and before), I see just my folders and just my addressbook, and my wife
sees just her folders and just her addressbook, plus there are some common folders we
both see.

I just tried the upgrade to 2.12.00 and can't get this behaviour. The folder view
works as before, but if I open my addressbook in my Group, it shows up also in my
wife's group, and vice versa. Switched back to 2.11.2 and everything works as before.

Can anyone reproduce this and tell me whether
1. It's a new feature (unwelcome here!)
2. Something's broken
3. I need to do something different.

TIA

I can't get Roguemoticons to work

Hello all!

As of late last night, I am using TB! v2.12. I have just downloaded
the Roguemoticon file (rogues.zip) but have been unable to get it to
work.

I unzipped it and placed the files (including the pdsf2.msl
rogues.msl files) in /The Bat!/images. This is just a guess on my part
since I couldn't find any instructions anywhere on where to put these
files.

When I open a message with the X-Rogue header (specifically, a message
from Roelof Otten) I don't see his picture.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

2.12.00 freezes on collect and can't quit

2004-07-14 Thread admin
Upgraded to 2.12.0

Now connection window loads all the tasks but nothing is collected.

Just hangs.

Abort all tasks clears the window but then accounts can't be asked to
collect individually - they don't appear in the connection window.

Also: (connected?)

CTRL-ALT-DEL does not show The Bat as a running application. Even when
it starts up fresh.

and

Although The Bat appears in no start-up menu anywhere, it is starting
automatically when the machine is re-booted (warm or cold).

URGENT ADVICE:

How do I get back to 2.11.02 as easily and as quickly as possible
please.

Hello Allie!

Sorry for the delay in conversation. We had a little weather here
overnight and real life took my attention for awhile here.

Your advice is much appreciated. If you don't mind having one more
post about this, and don't mind to reply, how soon should this
discussion of Subject: guidelines have its thread changed?
Just taking it for an example.

I don't mean to be facetious--I'm entirely serious about these
questions. I was, to speak boldly and frankly, appalled at the way
Maggie wrote to you in regard to your Mod post to her. I consider her
a friend, as I do you, and so I made no comment to either of you,
publicly or privately at the time.

It's like an old joke, which some who are against any mention of
violence might find distasteful, but which, given my background as a
teacher, I like:

Parent: Teacher, my child is sensitive. If he misbehaves, just slap
the child next to him, and he'll get the message.

I took what you said to Maggie perhaps too much to heart.

You know, I think my best course will be to change no subject lines
and wait for you to appear in your Mod hat.

I don't think this issue, contrary to what you have said, and I say
this most respectfully, is between me and Douglas alone.

He directly challenged me as to your Moderator's ruling. He implied
that I was infringing on your role.

I'm sensitive to my own feelings that I certainly do not want to move
in on your territory.

I got a C in conduct in first grade. My mother went to see the teacher
about it. What had I done, my mother wanted to know.

Oh, Mrs. Roberts, it is not really serious, replied my teacher in this
face-to-face conference. Mary Eunice just wants to teach my class,
that's all. She finishes her work in two minutes, and then she's up
all over the room, disrupting everything and helping everyone else
with his work.

I may never have grown any older than 6 in age, Allie. You will just
have to watch out for me. I'll be looking for the gentlest kind of
trouts. :)

Changing the Subject Header (Was: Time to Upgrade (Was: One caveat about Folder View Settings in v. 2.11.02 [was Re: Time to Upgrade?]))

2004-07-14 Thread Douglas Hinds

Hello Mary and others following this thread,

In response to the message Mary Bull sent to Allie on 14/07/2004
regarding Changing the Subject Header (sent with a Subject Header
Time to Upgrade (Was: One caveat about Folder View Settings in v.
2.11.02 [was Re: Time to Upgrade?])

Since the focus is no longer on whether it's Time to Upgrade (to v.
2.x, which in fact, isn't even mentioned in either post), _NOW is the
time to Change the Subject Header_.

Secondly Mary, I never bawled you out. I simply changed the Subject
Header back to what it was, since 1).- the subject hadn't changed
and 2).- I was using the header to follow up / reply to the answers
received.

I suggest we all keep in mind that these are technical (rather than
personal) matters.

(On my part) Nuff sed! (The next thread I in which I participate is
likely to be titled Installing v. 2.12 - which I downloaded last
night.

MB Maybe he needs you to remind him to reprimand me. (But since
MB he participated in this thread with Time to Upgrade as the
MB subject, maybe his understanding of the subject subject is
MB similar to mine).

AM Yes. I thought the subject was fine.

MB Allie, could you please clarify the guidelines a bit more for me,
MB then? I was really trying to cooperate with you when I changed the
MB subject line ...

One or the other of us is misunderstanding what the other has written.

I was already concerned about the conflict I perceived between Allie's
first Mod post, which happened to be to Maggie, on this list in regard
to meaningful subject choices, and what I had felt to be anger toward
me from you in our last exchanges on tbot.

I was not referring to what you had yesterday said on tbudl, when I
said you had bawled me out. I was referring to two or three threads in
which we had participated on tbot. Here's a cp from the tbot
exchange:

mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Begin copy-and-paste:
Secondly: Changing the subject header may accurately reflect the
content, but doing that makes it harder for me to find your post
(which I saw coming in via the Mail Dispatcher).

I consider it gratuitous, in this case.
End copy-and-paste+++

Further on in that exchange, you asked me not to waste your time.

Now, I'm probably a very stupid, slow learner in these matters. But I
genuinely don't know what to do.

The best I can think to do is not to correspond with you any more. I
was only trying to help and I got what felt to me like lectures and
sarcasm, both earlier on tbot and yesterday on tbudl.

And the best I can think to do as far as subject lines on tbudl, with
regard to those threads I do choose to post to, is not to change them,
and to wait for Allie to come on in his Mod hat and tell me when to
change them.

2.12.00 cannot handle multiple accounts?

I have 38 email accounts that get checked regularly.

2.12.00 fails and freezes with no way out but to kill the process

Have just gone back to 2.11.02 and all is well again.

I use POPfile which means the fetch is proxied - whether that has

To do that I would have to alter the transport section of each and

do it in one move! So I am reluctant - and time starved - to do that.

A How do I get back to 2.11.02 as easily and as quickly as possible

I didn't realise one could simply install older versions over newer.
Have done that and all is back to normal.

I also didn't get any information in the bottom half of the connection

messages I sent to this group were bounced back!

Now all is checking fine and sending fine in 2.11.02.

Some people differ on those conclusions. While I'm all in favor

more than just formality on its side. Type is easier to read
quickly, and it's easier to read aloud if necessary, when
sentences are subtly separated by that extra space. In any event,
however, since in nearly all settings the two-space rule remains
in effect, TB!'s spacing looks odd to recipients and is impossible

A better solution would be for the editor (MicroEd in the case of

I'm not really in favour of typing two spaces after a period. (What's
the difference between a period and a dot?) Just because some schools
in the states taught that, doesn't mean it was general accepted
practice.
Even I am old enough to have learned typing before the computer age. I
was taught to type one space after any kind of punctuation. Maybe
that's Dutch or European. I don't know.
I also was taught to start a new paragraph with four spaces. One of
the other things those poor people tried to hammer in me was that when
writing a letter to the states (I guess that should be capitalized)I
should place the address on the wrong side of the letter.

All of those conventions should not be optional. Just forget about
them, just remember that when they're making one option, they should
implement the others too. You'd get check boxes for one space, after a
period, two spaces, three. One space after a comma, two spaces. And of
of those other conventions.
So please no options. The make the reformatting more prone to bugs and
keep the folks at RitLabs from doing useful work. That's my two cents.

Are you per chance counting on a different moment than TB?
Over here it's counting alright.
TB's purging starts when you're closing it down. When you collect a
message everyday in a certain folder, that folder will always have one
message more than TB's setting. (Provided you open TB once everyday.)

CP %WINDOWSMAJORVERSION.%WINDOWSMINORVERSION Build%

You could set it at one single line in the QT, since the text it

CP Also, what is the meaning of the %- characters that I sometimes see in

The meaning of the %- macro is that the end of line character
immediately after the macro will be forgotten by the editor, so this:
Roe%-
lof O%-
tt%-
en
Will result in this:
Roelof Otten
Most often this is done to enhance the readability

So the macro you proposed could be written as:
%SetHeader(X-Archive,expiry=0)%-
Using The Bat! v%THEBATVERSION on %WINDOWSPLATFORMNAME
%WINDOWSMAJORVERSION.%WINDOWSMINORVERSION Build% %WINDOWSBUILDNUMBER %WINDOWSCSDVERSION
Thus Splitting it in a distinct header part of the template that
doesn't have any text implications for the message body, since leaves
no trail whatsoever. And a text part that inserts some numbers.

Of course you could break up that latter sentence into two or more
parts, would give something like this:
%SetHeader(X-Archive,expiry=0)%-
Using The Bat! v%THEBATVERSION on %WINDOWSPLATFORMNAME %-
%WINDOWSMAJORVERSION.%WINDOWSMINORVERSION Build% %-
%WINDOWSBUILDNUMBER %WINDOWSCSDVERSION
This would give the same result as the previous template, but I think
the readability diminishes.

What do you mean by lack of in-mail and out-mail filtering? Do you
 mean incoming and outgoing mail?

Yes. An example of missing in-mail filtering is the lack of
functionality to clean up subject lines as email arrives (with either
an internal script or external program). An example of out-mail
filtering is the inability of, say, an external program to add header
lines based perhaps on the first line of message text - handy for

When to change subjects within an ongoing thread (Was: Re: Time to Upgrade)

2004-07-14 Thread Allie Martin
Mary Bull, [MB] wrote:

Sorry for the delay in conversation. We had a little weather here
overnight and real life took my attention for awhile here.

That's no problem. We all have to live in and around these lists.

Your advice is much appreciated. If you don't mind having one more
post about this, and don't mind to reply, how soon should this
discussion of Subject: guidelines have its thread changed?
Just taking it for an example.

I've elected to change the subject of my reply to you because none of
what I'm discussing has anything to do with upgrading from v1.6 to v2.
None of what I discuss here would influence someone interested in a
discussion looking at that question.

We're now discussing when to change the subject for a message in an
ongoing thread as well as the circumstances surrounding this change of
subject.

The same goes for your message (the one I'm now replying to) since it
really has nothing to do with the original query Douglas made.

My general rule is to ask myself when replying to a message in a
thread, Is this message related to the topic being discussed? Does it
contribute to the original query?

Let's look at the time you originally chose to change the subject.
This was in message mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] . In that
message you were pretty much on topic. You first mentioned that v2 was
stable for you, a core concern with Douglas' issue on whether or not
he should upgrade. You went on to mention an annoying bug and
mentioning this bug was directly related to answering his qestion
about the problems that currently existed with v2 which in turn would
influence his decision to upgrade or not. IOW's, the essence of your
response revolved around his question. I didn't really see a need to
change the subject.

Ok.

Parent: Teacher, my child is sensitive. If he misbehaves, just slap
the child next to him, and he'll get the message.

The public trouting is based on this principle. If a member sees
another member being moderated, they'll take note of what provoked the
moderator's interjection and avoid doing the same.

You know, I think my best course will be to change no subject lines
and wait for you to appear in your Mod hat.

Take whatever course you like Mary. I mean that in a gentle way. :) If
you prefer a wait and see approach then that's ok. I'm not here to
have you standing and wondering what to do. You changed a subject and
Douglas changed it back. You didn't find it unreasonable to change it
while he did. But don't these disagreements happen all the time? I
can't really prevent this sort of thing from happening since we all
don't think the same.

I don't think this issue, contrary to what you have said, and I say
this most respectfully, is between me and Douglas alone.

Your subject change, an attempt to obey list rules isn't worthy of a
:trout:. It's worthy of commendation. Douglas' opinion that you
inappropriately changed the subject is not at all a breach of rules. I
do agree with him in this instance that the subject didn't have to be
changed. He proceeds to change it back. I doubt I'd have done it that
way but you know, we all tend to do some things differently.

He directly challenged me as to your Moderator's ruling. He implied
that I was infringing on your role.

I didn't really see this. Any further discussion about this particular
point, I'd prefer off-list.

I'm sensitive to my own feelings that I certainly do not want to move
 in on your territory.

You didn't.

You will just have to watch out for me. I'll be looking for the
 gentlest kind of trouts. :)

It's difficult to bring across our feeling with only trouts, but my
trouts are always intended to be gentle, though taken seriously. :)

Nor did I have to hit Ctrl-Shift-Alt-T. As soon as I moved the

I guess this is because TB! had already read the .msl file. The

Autoformat leaves those extra spaces after periods.

2004-07-14 Thread Allie Martin
Hi all,

Just for those who wish to preserve those extra spaces after periods.

Though Alt-L will remove them when reflowing text, Autoformat will
not. Toggle on auto-format and try it, i.e., CTRL+Shift+F.

The thing with autoformat is that it will reflow to perfection any
text that isn't completely separated by an extra line. As a result you
can't
 do this
with autoformat
enabled. :) When I need to do that I toggle
   it off.

JR Ah... well. Let me be more specific then. This is not a folder

Then, to stay in line with your subject, I suspect it's just you. I've
got several folders that have limits set and all of them check with
their limits.
Note that I let TB do the counting, I didn't count the messages
myself.

Anyhow, if you still think the total is one off, I'd suggest that you
delete the messages.tbb and .tbi files for that folder. (While TB is
closed down.) And wait till the numbers are high enough. There might
be a teeny little bit of corruption in your junk folder. (Not
surprising though, considering the contents.)

Re: New spammer technique?

jrsn First thing is to filter out all msgs that are not addressed to

this sounds backwards. Here is my idea:
1. known filter for everyone in your AB
2. all lists to separate folders
3. SPAM folder for the rest

every once in a while I'll get a PM from someone on this list NOT in my
AB, but if they aren't in my AB and it isn't from a list, 99.9% should
be spam, right? of course, every time you sign up for something NEW, tht
email will come and be classified as spam, how do you account for those?

jrsn Then I set all my filters for those subjects whom/that
jrsn I know, i.e. mail lists, etc.

jrsn Then I set all my filters for entries in my ABs.

jrsn Finally, I flag those msgs which don't fall into any of those
jrsn categories. Eventually a pattern emerges I filter for that as
jrsn well.

OT: pausing tbudl list subscription

2004-07-14 Thread jwayne
Is there a way to easily pause a subscription (say I'm going on vacation) instead of
un-subscribe / re-subscribe which normally takes two requests / confirmations?

Thanks -
