change email address

2001-07-03 Thread Daniel Morton

Dear TBUDL,

Sorry to disturb you all for admin questions but I want to change my
email address for the discussion group. I went to the bat website and
sent the request to the information section but I have still not heard
back and this is 4/5 weeks ago. My problem is that I want to use
webmail and I get 2 personal messages and 100 bat newsgroup messages
so I just want to create a mail account for the bat program. Any ideas
how I can change my email address? thanks.

Best regards,
Daniel

I knew that some weeks ago everything worked fine, so I consider him

 ***This is an Automated Reply***

DH Something is definitely wrong here. Have changed anything in your
DH PGP automation process, Chema?

DH Or is the error on John's side?

The error is on both sides to an extent. The SendPGPkeys filter
needs to list exclusion addresses (ignore requests from known lists).
That's simple enough to do.

As for John... (and HomeSick Mac - please read this carefully). This
is the moderatorial trouting Thomas mentioned.

stock lecture
I have a pet hate in TB. That pet hate is named Folder Templates. In
150 folders I have two and only two that have folder templates. They
are for two specific lists which don't set the reply address properly.

There is nothing else for which folder templates can be used that
can't be covered and even improved upon using Address Book templates.
There are dangers in using Folder Templates that are not there when
you use AB templates.

The dangers are all complacency based and are at their worst in
templates which use the [EMAIL PROTECTED] without a before it. So any
pre-existing addresses are retained.

Back to the lecture: every time I say this, someone takes exception to
something I've said with comments like 'danger' is a bit harsh or
I've used Folder templates for ages and it's never gone wrong for
me.

Here's a fact for you: it goes wrong. That's why I'm writing this
message yet again.

It works exactly as designed and that design has a fundamental flaw.
The flaw is that it places too much responsibility on the user to make
sure that the addresses given on a new message are those intended.

With address book templates, there is never a mistake of this kind.
Replies are perfectly directed. New messages are a bit trickier.
Instead of clicking to the folder then clicking for a new message, you
have to click to the right of the new message button and select the
list address from the favourites (having denoted that the address *is*
a favourite in the address book).

Address Book Templates (was: Re: PGP keys automation running amok?)

2001-07-03 Thread Januk Aggarwal

Hi Marck,

Historians believe that Tue, 3 Jul 2001 at 11:14 GMT +0100 was when,
Marck D Pearlstone [MP] typed the following:

snip
MP I have a pet hate in TB. That pet hate is named Folder Templates.

The only thing I would add is that folder level templates are
dangerous when people use the %TO, %CC or %BCC macros. But I think you
alluded to that point.

MP In 150 folders I have two and only two that have folder templates.
MP They are for two specific lists which don't set the reply address
MP properly.

Could you eliminate even those two folder level templates with some
creative filtering and batch files?

What I was thinking is: Create a new address book with two groups
(one for each list). You can customize the group templates as you see
fit. Now exit TB and copy this blank AB to a safe location.

Now have your filters automatically add the sender to the appropriate
group. Of course this means that your address book is going to fill
up rather quickly. To compensate, every couple of days, you can
overwrite the full AB with the blank backup. With a two line script
and Windows Task Scheduler, it should be a fairly easy task.

It seems to me, this would be just as effective as folder level
templates, and slightly safer too.

Just a thought.

Setting up Send Key Filter

On Mon, 2 Jul 2001 23:49:02 -0700, Joanne wrote these words of wisdom:

JV What the heck is this???

For Chema:

This happened to me before and to prevent this you have to be precise. You
wish only requests from private senders to be replied to and you don't
wish replies to trigger the filter.

To do this I'd enable regular expressions in the filter options.

For the filter strings I'd include the following:

String: ^SendMyPGPKeys\s*$ Location: Subject Presence: Yes

String: (TBUDL|TBTECH|TBBETA|PGP-Basics)@ Location: Sender Presence: No

The regex in the first string defined will prevent your autoresponder
being triggered by Re: SendMyPGPKeys

The second will prevent the autorespnder being triggered if the message is
from any of the defined addresses. You can stick in other e-mail usernames
as you need.

For John Hammett:

Marck covered your problem in his lecture. ;-)

Hello Dragan others on this TB! list following this thread,

I wrote this yesterday but didn't log back on to send it.
Judging from the comments that came in later, the file containing
the virus evidently did NOT come in via TBUDL. IAC, the name of the
file is the critical concern here.

Monday, July 02, 2001, you stated, apparently regarding a file that
was sent to TBUDL with a message by Mark Brown w/ the subject:

beat this:

HM Maybe I'm overdoing here but anyway:

HM I've got this ( including the file which fixes everything if the virus was
HM maybe was already executed etc ) :

Thanks for telling the rest of us. It would help to mention the NAME
of the file. The virus info you included is very interesting, but
the fundamental issue is whether the file containing it came through
or not.

If it was sent in a message posted by Mark Brown with the above
subject, JoAnne Virant stated:

JV whatever you sent was removed by the bat demon

in relation to that.

So once again: *What is the name of the file*? I show no attachment
with that post.

HM Dear Customer,

HM Thank you for contacting the Virus Doctor @ Trend Micro. We
HM received your e-mail with attachment.

HM The file you send us has been detected as PE_Magistr.A by our

HM PE_MAGSITR.A is a per-process, memory-resident, polymorphic

  anything (I think)

I've created the following filter structure:

   All filters for lists.
All filters for commercial senders (not spam)
Filter for people with AB entry
   PGP filter
Rest of messages are treated as SPAM, until adding sender to AB

I think PGP has moved to top or TBUDL has moved below PGP. I dont
  know how this could happen.

I've changed POP password from office to avoid home computer to
download mail, so no more PGP messages for now.

OT: Virus-catching by PC-Cillin (was: beat this seems like spam to me)

2001-07-03 Thread Thomas F

Hello Jan,

On Tue, 3 Jul 2001 09:37:30 -0400 GMT (03/07/2001, 21:37 +0800 GMT),
Jan Rifkinson wrote:

JR So what do you do if you get a PC-cillin quarantine msg?

If the PC-Cillin window pops up while I check mail, I check the
account logs for the below error message, which I psoted on this list
as an example, with message-ID [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

!21/06/2001, 10:37:31: FETCH - [Inbox] could not store message (file name -
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\bat5122.TMP)

I then use the despatcher to delete the message from the server.

If the virus is already in the message base (because PC-Cillin didn't
run when the message was downloaded or whatever), I have posted a
step-by-step instruction how to identify the message (out of
thousands) with message-ID [EMAIL PROTECTED]
yesterday.

Hello Listers,

I can see now.

PGP Filter was triggered by a PGP request generated for someone who
has instructed the TBUDL folder template to add list address to
recipes. List server changes the sender to [EMAIL PROTECTED],
so a request for PGP come from list address.

I would like to suggest list members to add this line to their
templates:
%IF %TO=;%TO=[EMAIL PROTECTED];%TO=%TO

Anyway, my filter is configured wrong, so I am the one and only

One more thing, I used to be able to download emails without having to

TF Yeah, the little problem with the PC-Cillin / TB combination is that
TF you never know which mail exactly cotnained the virus. You don't even

I personally use DrWeb and have the same problem in that Dr Web will
detect the virus but will not be able to tell me exactly which message
it's associated with. It will only tell me which message base is involved.
I then search for the attachment.

Of course, if you have the attachments stored separately, Dr Web will
locate the virus. It will again not be able to tell you which message it
came from.

HM OK, but if I store the attachments in the message bodies ?

Same problem.

HM Right now they're separated in the Account Properties. If I put them
HM together I'll be able to tell which message contained the virus. Right
HM ? Wrong ?

AFAIK and you still will not be able to tell.

Wouldn't the anti-virus program have to be optimised to handle TB message
bases in order to locate and extract just the virus from the message base
file? Otherwise it will delete the entire message base when you ask that
the infected file be deleted.

The only way I can see you knowing exactly which message is infected is
when the message is scanned upon receipt or you manually scan attachments.

   Right.

The only thing I'll have to do is to tell my PC Cillin _not_ to automaticaly

When you load Norton AV look into the help file for email.
Basically, instead of the Mail Server name you place it with
127.0.0.1 then take the Mail Server name (it's easiest when you cut
and paste) place it just ahead of your User ID using a /then
mail server name.
example
Mail Sever 127.0.0.1
User Ramon/(put Mail Server Name here)
Password (your password)

It should now stop asking you for your password.

Correct. For any AV-program, the whole message base is one file. In

have export all messages, which makes them seperate *.msg files. And
then scan these individual files.

ACM The only way I can see you knowing exactly which message is infected is
ACM when the message is scanned upon receipt

No, because the error message will identify the file bat1276.tmp as
the infected one. Yes, this is the message, but you don't know right
away which one it is.

ACM Wouldn't the anti-virus program have to be optimised to handle TB message
ACM bases in order to locate and extract just the virus from the message base
ACM file? Otherwise it will delete the entire message base when you ask that
ACM the infected file be deleted.

TF Correct. For any AV-program, the whole message base is one file. In
TF order to identify the message with the attachment in its body, you
TF have export all messages, which makes them seperate *.msg files. And
TF then scan these individual files.

Ok then. This isn't surprising.

TF No, because the error message will identify the file bat1276.tmp as
TF the infected one. Yes, this is the message, but you don't know right
TF away which one it is.

So what do you do in that situation? Manually inspect all your recently
downloaded mail?

No, I check the account logs for the error message couldn't rigfht
to inbox or something. See my mail of last night.

Then I go into that account with the mail despatcher, and have not had
a problem identifying the offending message by sight.
