I'm a bit perplexed here re: grouping and reading a set of messages ... only those messages within the group ...
Howdie TBL'ers, Thus far, I have been unsuccessful in grouping messages and reading them contiguously/continuously, i.e., one right after another. While I can group them, i.e., messages with the same Subject, it does not appear that I can read the first message in the group, then the next, then the next ... instead after having read the first message, The Bat! will jump to either another group of messages or a single message that happens to be in between the groups of various messages. I've used the path View View threads by Subject to group the messages. Is(are) there some other option(s) I should be setting to accomplish what I want to do? Is there also a way to do this when one uses the Search Tool on, e.g., Subject? I've used the Search Tool and the end result was simply a list of messages with the designated Subject argument ... good, so far, but when I opened the first message to read it, I again simply wanted to read the next message in the search list. It didn't happen. Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions. -- Best regards, Dirigo Current version is 2.01.3 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

It's been awhile since there was a reply to this thread, but I realized that while there was some fun discussion of posting principles, my problem was not actually solved. While I certainly appreciate TB's method of stripping everything after the cut mark, I am trying to find a way to *NOT* strip below the cut mark. If it's a few extra steps, that's OK - but I can't understand why it cannot be done somewhat easily. I am reminded of MS Word's attempt to make things easier by automating so many things. Sometimes I don't *WANT* that!! What I want to do is have the ability to reply to someone and keep the message history intact. So if there is more than one reply from me, TB will still keep everything - ignoring the cut marks. Marck, if I am to understand your comment you should *not* use a cut mark then I would have to plan ahead or make a good guess as to what kind of e-mail correspondence I'm going to have *ahead of time* - and this isn't feasible. I don't always know when I'm going to need a message history. And since TB does not allow me to directly edit messages, I cannot go back and delete or alter cut marks *before* replying. So if I don't guess right at the beginning of a conversation, I'm out of luck. Arrrgh!! This is aggravating. Currently, when I need to quote multiple responses that include cut marks, I forward the message, change the Subject line (FW to RE), delete the forwarded message line at the top and the end forwarded message line at the bottom. Then send. Not exactly elegant. Why, oh why can't I simply highlight the *ENTIRE* message (all responses, cut marks, etc.) and hit F4? Logically, this should work. If I want to use selective reply - and I select EVERYTHING - why is TB not following its own logic? The Bat's over-zealousness with deleting after cut marks is causing me problems. Sorting office: actions: Export message to file
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hello TBUDL, Quite a while ago I set up my answerphone/fax software to send faxes and voicemail to me via email. As a result my TB! message base has grown 'fatter' over the last year or so - mostly because of the mp3 voicemail attachments. Anyhow, I thought rather than let the message base swell even more I'd export the messages to a folder on another partition when they are filtered into the voice/fax folder in TB!, and then just delete the messages after listening to/reading them. Well I can't seem to get it working. In the sorting office I chose the Export message to file option under the actions tab, and set the export format to RFC-288(.MSG). I then chose a location for the files to be exported to by browsing to the location using the browse button. However, TB! forces you to add a filename and then sticks a .txt extension on the end of whatever filename you enter. I therefore renamed .txt to .msg. And then the problem is that only one message ever gets exported, no matter how many call messages come in. Am I doing something wrong? By the way, it is not necessary to to deselect in your example above. I'm very glad to hear that the problem has been sorted out. :-) The only one that tempted me at all was Pocomail. There are several things that I really do like about Pocomail, some of which I like better than TB. That said, Pocomail is rather slow when handling large volumes of mail and I think that would have driven me nuts in the long run. However, I really do like the Pocomail interface and some features. Before I moved to TB!, I was a loyal user of Pocomail (from v1.x to the mid-2.x builds). There are certainly many interesting and/or useful features in Pocomail, but after v2.11 and until I found TB!, all subsequent versions just had too many annoying bugs and/or instabilities for my tastes. My theory about Pocomail's bugs/instability issues is that Slaven R. (primary inventor/developer of Pocomail) is 1) so full of many interesting ideas of his own that he's all too willing to keep adding features (often bells and whistles in my view) without being sure that the basics are well-grounded first, and 2) he's almost too anxious to please and be responsive to the demands/wishes of Pocomail users that he, as mentioned in point 1, neglects basics in favor or adding new and innovative features. One of those basics I'm personally very concerned with is plain text handling/formatting. Plain text handling was, and still is (though quite improved since the earlier builds) somewhat lacking and unpredictable (especially in comparison to TB!'s *wonderful* handling of plain text). Being the email client junkie I am, I still have Pocomail installed (and Becky too!), and keep my copies of both updated, but I'm just too busy these days to play with Pocomail v3 much. I do still find the plain text handling in v3 lacking. That said, I would be interested in hearing (reading) about which features you really like about Pocomail - and why - especially those you might feel are even better than with TB! I may have high hopes for Pocomail, and I really respect Slaven, but it's going to take a lot more than just a multitude of good ideas to make me switch from TB! to *any* other client. :-) Finally, to get this a *little* bit more on-topic to this list, I want to make an entirely subjective comment about interfaces... Personally, I *really like* the TB! interface, and I don't know why so many people complain about it. It's clean and functional, and the glyph set I use even with my v2 (the v1.6.x glyphs) are, to my eyes, more pleasant to deal with than most other email clients I've tried or used. Pocomail has many pretty skins available (in addition to individual user options for changing the look), and to my tastes, though very functional and more customizable than TB!'s, I find Becky's interface to be, aesthetically anyway, pretty ugly in comparison to TB!. But of course, most of these functional/customizable/aesthetic preferences are quite subjective. In terms of functionality and stability, I favor Becky over Pocomail (and of course, in enough ways that matter to me, I favor TB! over Becky! :-)). Perhaps if we want to continue this direction of the discussion, TBOT would be the more appropriate venue. -- Melissa PGP public keys: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]Body=Please%20send%20keys TB! v2.01.3 on Windows XP 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature Current version is 2.01.3 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Most of the time you will probably only need to reply to points in a message. A lot of the message isn't usually required to maintain context. MAL When I select one part of a message to respond to, I hit F4 and MAL can write a reply, but the rest of the message disappears. If you want to reply to every line in an email you could hit CTRL + F5 to quote the whole message. You can then simply trim, reply, and reformat as you go. If you want to reply to only a single point in a message you can highlight the text in the message and hit F4 and type your reply underneath the quoted text. MAL Is the answer simply cursoring through the message and leaving a MAL blank line between the quotes and my response? Well yes really, but remember a lot of the time you don't usually need to requote a whole message to maintain context. Memo Autoview (ctrl-shift-i)
Does anyone use this? I find something similar very useful in Becky. Unfortunately I registered and greatly prefer The Bat. In TB the Memo Autoview doesn't minimize with TB. It's fairly useless like that. I am forced to close it when I minimize TB. Then re-open it explicitly. It would be much less useless if any of the following were true. 0. It is not shown when TB is minimized. ..and any of the following.. 1. If when enabled it popped back up after being closed for messages with a memo 2. If it was a tab on the bottom of the message views, like there is a tab for rendered html and text and even attachments. (Heck, while were add it, add the option to (OPTIONALLY of course) always show a headers tab down there) 3. If the dialog (and others like it) could be popped/snapped into the interface somewhere. I prefer option #2, but #1 would be a decent compromise in the short term. Listing 0 is implied and universally preferred with any possible option. Does anyone care? I know we can talk about features or changes you want instead or which take priority, but here's mine. I think it would be great to add notes to messages, and think it would be even better (from one standpoint) to fix a feature TB already has. I would write a plugin for this sort of functionality if the TB API allowed it. Does it? All bad habits are hard to shake. (Just like smoking) As I was taught to quote sparsely when I started mailing I can't speak from my own experience. Yep, that's why it's called 'selective quoting', you select only the part you want to reply to. MAL Is the answer simply cursoring through the message and leaving a MAL blank line between the quotes and my response? When you want to reply to several parts of the message, you don't use F4, but you quote the whole message. (Just like I did, in this message.) You delete the irrelevant parts and type your reply beneath the actual questions. A blank line between quotes and response enhances the readability, so it's something I'm doing all of the time. TB! usually has several ways to do one thing (hmmm...how many ways can TB! change a lightbulb? :-)). Anyway... If you want to read each thread message by message, whether you've already read some of the message before or not, here's *one* way... First, you want to be sure the thread you want to read is completely expanded: Keyboard shortcut (without slashes): Shift/Ctrl/+ Then, just use the down arrow key to go from top to bottom, and the up arrow key to move up through the messages. You can collapse a single thread with: Shift/Ctrl/- Or... You can expand *all* threads in a folder with Ctrl/* (the * on the number pad), then you can go up and down through every message in the folder with the up/down arrow keys. -- Melissa PGP public keys: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]Body=Please%20send%20keys TB! v2.01.3 on Windows XP 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature Current version is 2.01.3 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Error: Canvas does not allow drawing
G'day TBUDL Members, Several times today my Bat! has crashed with multiple pop-up warning boxes saying Canvas does not allow drawing or Canvas does not allow. This has happened when I have tried to move a message, and also when opening an existing message to reread it. As the boxes are popping up faster than I can click on the OK the only way out has been to CTRL-ALT-DEL. I have tried running the folder maintenance function and it reports no errors (or indeed any action required). Closing and re-opening The Bat! initially solved the problem but it then happened again. I have closed Windows down and rebooted and so far there have been no more problems. Any suggestions as to what might be causing the problem, and how to fix it, would be appreciated. -- Bob Mo®®is Thursday, 13 November 2003 Using The Bat! v2.01.3 on Windows 98 4.10 Build A Current version is 2.01.3 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Re[4]: I'm a bit perplexed here re: grouping and reading a set of messages ... only those messages within the group ...
Hello Stuart and Melissa, Thank you both for your suggestions. I used both the Shift-Cntrl +/- to expand and contract grouped messages (grouped using Vasily's suggestion of View View thread by References). Both commands worked quite well. However, I was unsuccessful in being able to read one message right after another. Yes, the up, down, right arrow keys worked in the sense of moving from one message to another IN THE GROUPED LIST itself, but, after opening the first message in the list and after having read it, to simply move to the next message (with it spontaneously opening to be read) is/was a non-event/a no-go. Perhaps I am failing to describe my problem adequately, so let's say you open a message in your inbox, then you select the Next icon option. It has been my experience that the next message will automatically open and present itself to be read. The Subject field of these messages aren't necessarily even related ... simply messages received in a certain order. What I would like to do is simply select a message (either grouped per se via the Search Tool or the View by thread option) and be able to do the same thing ... having no luck thus far, so I have to assume PEBCAK (Problem Exists Between Chair And Keyboard) since it seems like you folks don't have this problem. Thanks Melissa for the detailed suggestions ... and you are certainly correct when you state there are more than one way to achieve an objective. BYW, I agree with your suggestion re: a toggle ON/OFF switch for reading emails ON/OFF line. This functionality has nothing to do with whether one has broadband or dial-up. I'll keep trying on my end. Maybe I'm close and am just missing something ... but just don't know it. Yeah, right. LOL. Take care y'all. -- Best regards, Dirigomailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Current version is 2.01.3 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

It has been my experience that the next message will automatically open and present itself to be read. The Subject field of these messages aren't necessarily even related ... simply messages received in a certain order. I guess you're reading in Folder View. Okay... If you're not using any threading options, the message list will be in simple chronological order (ascending or descending order, by either time created or time received...all depending on your preference). If you're reading like that, the Next icon will just go down the list one by one. If you're using a threaded view (threading by references is usually the preferred way to thread), the Next icon will not open threads, but jump to the next thread immediately after the last opened message in the previous thread. If you want to read threads one by one, message by message, the easiest way is this: Down arrow to go to the next message if it's on the same level (not a direct reply to the current message). Right arrow to go to the reply to the current message. Then, if there are no more nestled replies from where you're at, yet there are more messages in the thread below, the down arrow will again take you to the next message. -- Melissa PGP public keys: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]Body=Please%20send%20keys TB! v2.01.3 on Windows XP 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature Current version is 2.01.3 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
