Filters 3.0

2004-09-30 Thread Jan
I've defined a number of Common Filters and today I realised that most of
them have disappeared from the Sorting Office.

However, when I open account.srb in a text editor I can see references to the
vanished filters.

Is there a way to recover them?
Thanks,
Jan

No, it should have a MiID, but some users deliberately set their mail

TN I just saw some SPAM mails do not have a MID.

We've seen proper list contributions here without MID, as a
consequence the replies didn't thread. When there's a MID lacking, it
should be inserted by a receiving mail server, however not all servers
do that (and when they do all of them give the same message different

RO writing a mail from the enabled to the disabled account. What should
RO TB do? Do a local delivery, because that's what the sending account

I would like to have it local delivered if the sending account has local
delivery enabled. This makes perfect sends to me.

RO That's why it's in the global network settings and not in the account
RO properties.

If you are seeing it as a global setting. I see this as an account
specific mail transport setting.

There is one, for me at least, compelling reason to have this as an
account setting. I use one of my accounts on my iPAQ. One of the things I
do is send a mail with a specific subject, that creates an autoreply. I do
this so I can see if TB! is still up and running. Obviously I do not want
to have it delivered locally, because then it would not reach my ISP mail
server were I would collect it with my iPAQ.

So you see I want all my accounts set for local delivery except 1.
Now I just switch them all of and on when I leave.

So as you see I would like to have it were I can find it but I will also
accept your kind offer of making it a local setting

What I miss the most was the possibility to copy a filter using Ctrl-C and

I have 2 questions for now.

First, some of my filter titles in the left column are colored blue.
Does this have a meaning and if so what?

The second question is about editing a filter.
I have a few filters that look like this.

sender ...
   or...
   or...
   or...

I now want to add a and function over all these or´s like this:

,-
| sender ...
|or...
|or...
|or...
`-
  and not flagged

I noticed that I have to place the or´s in a block, but can this be done
afterwards?

When you're writing a message, if in this message, there's only ASCII
caracters, The Bat! will set the caracter-set to US-ASCII which is
coded on 7 bit.

If you're writing some accent in it (example : éàù, etc.), The Bat!
will set it to the default character-set, that is to say ISO-8859-1 in
your case. ISO-8859-1 is coded on 8 bits.

If you add it to the folder template, you might not be on the right folder

Is it possible to search for messages which *do not* contain a certain

Probably possible by searching using regexp (F7 / Advanced / Regular

But how did you find these 30 messages among those 5000 then? (-:

in mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] said to Gerard:

Folder templates have to be treated very carefully. They are both a
 blessing and a curse.

TN Why are folder templates a curse?

It's been a while ... about time I trotted out the stock essay:

stock lecture
I have a pet hate in TB. That pet hate is named Folder Templates. In
150 folders I have two and only two that have folder templates. They
are for two specific lists which don't set the reply address properly.

There is nothing else for which folder templates can be used that
can't be covered and even improved upon using Address Book templates.
There are dangers in using Folder Templates that are not there when
you use AB templates.

The dangers are all complacency based and are at their worst in
templates which use the %TO= macro. If, at the instant you start a
new message you happen to be focused on the wrong folder, the message
gets given the wrong address. This happens when you click a mailto
without changing folders. The results vary from embarrassing to
excruciating depending upon the content of the misdirected mail.

BTW - another mistake in such templates is to use the construct
%TO=[EMAIL PROTECTED] without a %TO='' before it. So any
pre-existing addresses are retained.

Back to the lecture: every time I say this, someone takes exception to
something I've said with comments like 'danger' is a bit harsh or
I've used Folder templates for ages and it's never gone wrong for
me.

... snip

It works exactly as designed and that design has a fundamental flaw.
The flaw is that it places too much responsibility on the user to make
sure that the addresses given on a new message are those intended.

With address book templates, there is never a mistake of this kind.
Replies are perfectly directed. New messages are a bit trickier.
Instead of clicking to the folder then clicking for a new message, you
have to click to the right of the new message button and select the
list address from the favourites (having denoted that the address *is*
a favourite in the address book).
/stock lecture

TN So far (== the last five years), they have been a blessing for
TN me...

... and a danger for others.

TN At least when the filters are working... ;)

Filters? They don't relate to folder templates. Are you sure that's
what you meant?

This is the order of precedence:
Personal AB templates
AB group templates
Folder templates
Account templates

Mind that AB templates have to be triggered before you start the
typing of the text. If you start typing and then select an address,
there's no way that TB will translate your text into the appropriate
AB template.

The other exception is a mass mailing, because when you're doing a
mass mailing you select the template manually and that overrides any
preferences you might have configured for the recipients..

taken from the folder identity and the template from the AB. That was
also the reason that I never crossposted.

That's what I'm doing too, otherwise the identities don't work.

There's a simple way to ensure that your test messages go out to your

Why so? About all OS'es support Unicode. Windows has since NT 4.0. I

in my Instant Messaging programs and on all my websites. It work
perfectly fine and I can mix Japanese, Latin and other languages
without the need to specify additional code pages/conversion tables.
As long as programs support Unicode there is no need for users to

Dear Lynn,

MDP You send messages *to* the list address. Add the list address!
MDP Better still, put it in a group called lists and define a
MDP single group template for all them!

L file is different on all my lists .. you guys here aren't
L interested in my sewing set up, and the fish people don't care
L which version of Win I'm using, much less the version of TB ;-)

I do this by putting each of these subscripts into Quick Templates. I
then put the name of the QT containing the list specific suffix in the
AB entry for each, in the phone number field. My signature then looks
like this:

%if:%ABtoPhone:%qinclude(%ABtoPhone)%-
%qinclude(vsig)

That means a single template works for all lists and the lists that
need extras, get them.

Try Options|Active Account in the message editor window, or right
click on the account name shown in the status bar at the bottom of the

Hello Neal,

When the mouse pointer is over unread messages, one gets a yellow tool
window with total, read, and unread message counts. It is bothersome
to me and kind of flakey, so I wwould like to get rid of them.

Tooltips _only_ appear when your are _not_ viewing all messages in a
folder. For example if you are viewing only Unread messages, or messages
on a specific date, or flagged/unflagged, or from/to and specific
address, etc.

TBUDL Mission Statement

2004-09-30 Thread Marck D Pearlstone
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Greetings TB Listers,

This is your monthly message from the moderation team to remind you
of the primary purpose of this discussion list.

To review the list rules, follow the link at the end of this message.

Before posting a question to the list, please check The Bat! User's
FAQ at: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/FAQ.html and the list
archive at http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED] To
subscribe, send a message to mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
There is also a beginners 'MAQ' (Most Asked Questions) available by
clicking here: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] and
sending the resulting message.

 TBUDL Mission statement

The TBUDL list has been set up for the purpose of discussing The
Bat! and how to use it. It is a community of users ready and able to
help new users get to grips with some of the capabilities of this
flexible email client. More complex issues are discussed on the
TBTECH list (see below for details).

Simply send messages to mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] to send it
to the whole list.

See the notes at the end of this message for details about how to
manage your list membership or to leave the list.

It would probably be a good idea for you to set up a folder to keep
TBUDL messages in. If you do this, the next most useful thing to
have in place is an automatic filter to move mail from your inbox
into your TBUDL folder.

Set up a filter for incoming mail which looks for:

Header Field [Reply-To] Contains [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The Roguemoticon Project

It's nice to see your contact's face in the header ... and for them
to see yours. That's what roguemoticons are all about. If you wish
to add yourself, then you'll need to visit this site
http://www.pcwize.com/thebat
What this place will do for you is to allow you to create an
account, add your image and then let you download a .ZIP file
containing all the files you'll need to be able so see people's
faces without having to send or receive any real images in any
messages.

To trigger the roguemoticon display in the message header for anyone
reading your message using TB, you have the choice of using the
X-Rogue: header or a signature trigger.

How to use a signature trigger
The image is triggered by a 'Handle' you've defined in your
account, and when that Handle appears in a message it gets
replaced on the client side by the corresponding image. A handle
could look like anything you want it to look like pretty much.
For example:
:Leif_Gregory:
Just add this text to your standard message signature block.

How to create the X-Rogue: header
You can do that with this macro:
%SetHeader('X-Rogue',':your_handle:')%- in your templates for
this and other tb-lists.
However, the macro alone won't do the trick.
TB'll say: 'Hey, that's not any RFC822 header I know about', so
you'll have to define it as such:
Options .. Preferences .. Messages .. Message headers .. 'Add'

Now you'll get a pop-up to define the header

Display as: X-Rogue (or whatever, it isn't very important)
  RFC header: X-Rogue
Uncheck: 'This field is an address list' (because it isn't)
Check: 'Allow this field to be edited in the message editor'
Uncheck: 'Display this field in the scrollable part of the
  header pane'

Now you're done and every TB-user can see your lovable face when
they've installed the roguemoticons.

For you to see peoples faces:

To get this going, you should be running TB! v2.12 or later. Fetch
  the following file:
  http://www.pcwize.com/thebat/smileys/rogues.zip

Unzip it to the 'Images' directory that's in your TB! installation
  directory: C:\Program Files\The Bat!\Images
You should now have a directory called 'rogues' containing many
images as well as the file 'rogues.msl' in your Images directory.
Go into the preferences, and bring up the View/Editor options. Now
hit Shift-CTRL-Alt-T while TB! is in focus. This will re-fetch
TB!'s smiley set from disk and load the new images.
