Antispam software

2006-03-12 Thread Peter Kerekes

Hello,

I use BayesIt! version 0.8.4 (by A.N. Vinogradov)for Spam filtering.
However I don't think it does anything. My ISP is using a spam filter,
so I don't get to many ( 6-12 daily) but BayesIt doesn't automatically
filters them to the spam folder. I have to do it manually.

Probably my configuration is not correct. It is set: Average action,
move is set if score greater than 40. Both Blacklist rule and
White list rule are empty.

I checked some header on Spam info, 3 of them are here:

X-Spam-Status: No, hits=0.1 tagged_above=-100.0 required=5.0
  tests=FORGED_RCVD_HELO
X-Spam-Level:

another:
X-Spam-Status: No, hits=0.6 tagged_above=-100.0 required=5.0
 tests=FORGED_RCVD_HELO, HTML_20_30, HTML_MESSAGE
X-Spam-Level:

X-Spam-Status: No, hits=2.9 tagged_above=-100.0 required=5.0 tests=DCC_CHECK,
 HTML_40_50, HTML_MESSAGE, HTML_WEB_BUGS, MIME_HTML_ONLY, SPF_HELO_PASS,
 SPF_PASS, YOU_WON
X-Spam-Level: **

Here are two headers for spams which I manually moved as spam:

X-Spam-Status: No, hits=2.1 tagged_above=-100.0 required=5.0
 tests=DATE_IN_PAST_24_48, RCVD_IN_NJABL_DUL, RCVD_IN_SORBS_DUL
X-Spam-Level: **
Status:

X-Spam-Status: No, hits=3.7 tagged_above=-100.0 required=5.0
 tests=DATE_IN_PAST_24_48, RCVD_IN_NJABL_DUL, RCVD_IN_SORBS_DUL,
 SPF_HELO_SOFTFAIL, URIBL_SBL
X-Spam-Level: ***

Would appreciate any suggestion where is my problem, or how to
configure the White List and Black List Rule?

Or should I switch to Bayes Filter Plugin by Achim Winkler, is this
software better?

Thank you in advance

I've used Bayesit with some success after training. While I found it
did filter some, it wasn't what I was used to (K9). I've also used
Bayes Filter but had to change because of problems with TB being
default email. When clicking on a mailto TB would open several Edit
windows. Never could get that fixed.

I'm using AntispamSniper on my notebook and trialing on my desktop. It
has a better success rate after some training. It's not free but but
seems to be doing a better job.

My 2cents worth...

Larry

Perhaps, even with this half-baked message, I can offer a solution.

maintenance and max size of folders mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Could I do the same, ie moving a folder from documents settings /
application data/ The Bat/ Folder X to another spot on my harddrive
without affecting the working of TB? Could I if necessary put it
 back at a later stage?

You can remove the .TBI .TBB files from your mail directory and The
Bat! will not complain. However, I would only do this when The Bat!
was not running. The next time a message is place in that folder, it
will simply re-create those files.

Is any of this necessary or are you guys all happy with quite a
number of big folders within TB.

It doesn't cause me any problems. I currently have about 50,000
messages (a relatively small number, compared to many) in this
account. Most of them are kept in special archive folders which I keep
collapsed in the folder pane (They are sub-folders of the main
folder). I only really access them via the search tool. This keeps the
main folders down to a reasonable number (around 1,500).

Select Use Filter, click on Any message, select age. Should be

Funny. I just returned to popfile because all the others I've tried
didn't work for me. It also doesn't seem to be as large a ressource
hog anymore. On my old desktop it always used 6% cpu, I would've
expected it to use at least 1% on my faster laptop but it uses, well,
0%. Anyway, I've found while popfile has it's issues they're more
minor than those of the other programs. But best test them yourself,
it seems many people don't have issues with k9 for example...

Thanks!

How easy did you find it to set up?

Once set up, does it check your various accounts separately one at a time or
is there a way to have it interpose itself between the incoming mail and
the mailboxes? I'm asking because MUCH of that spam clearly comes from the
same spammers, so I'm guessing the filtering would be more efficient that
way.

But I could be off, the intricacies of the whole process do baffle me
somewhat g

I used BayesIt and it worked well enough considering the price g I
am using Agava now and at $12 is a value that mostly works better than
BayesIt. I have not used any of the intermediate programs like K9, so
cannot compare with those.

TJ K9 - http://keir.net/k9.html - free, as in beer.

puo How easy did you find it to set up?

I'm using it with eleven accounts - a mixture of domain and web-based.
It took about twenty minutes And I found the instructions
straightforward. A couple of changes to each account's properties plus
a new filterfor each. I append the word [Spam] to the end of the email's
subject line and any with that tag end up in a single spam folder.

You can use K9 for *all* your filtering (not just to identify
ham/spam) but I prefer to use TB! for that.

puo Once set up, does it check your various accounts separately one at a time

It does the latter. Anything identified as spam doesn't get to the
account; it's moved straight to the spam folder.

puo But I could be off, the intricacies of the whole process do baffle me
puo somewhat g

There are further 'intricacies' (you have to 'train it' to recognise
the less-obvious spam and there are occasional housekeeping functions
but it does start to work efficiently 'out-of-box' and the 'extras'
can wait.

After a couple of months I'm getting 98.55% accuracy but this figure
has reduced recently because of some innocuous-looking text spam.
