Folders deleted still exist

2007-07-30 Thread Lawrence Johnson
I've been reorganizing my mail folders. I am curious why folders and
sometimes mail files (.TBI and .TBI) still exist after they are
deleted from TB!. The folders no longer display from within TB! but
they are nonetheless physically present. I am having many problems
backing up my mail using Aid4Mail. I don't know if these residual
folders and mail files are the cause of the Aid4Mail problems, but I
am unable to account for the differences between the TB! folder display
and the folders on the physical disk. I should add that these
residual folders and files still exist after exitting the TB! with a
compress. I am running TB! Professional Edition 3.99.3

When deleting folders you can choose for the option to leave the
message base files intact. That means that the matching directory
won't be deleted. You can do that manually.
Compressing won't do anything for these folders, after all you told TB
yourself that the folders should be delteted from TB's message base.

I don't know Aid4Mail, so I can't say anything sensible about problems
with Aid4Mail an TB. Especially as you talk about 'many problems' and
not something specific.

I just checked the folders that are listed in the computer's disk
directory but not in The Bat.

Some of them are empty. (Some of the folders were too but I dont
remember which ones.) Some have files in them called

and

These are The Bat!'s message files. TBB contains the contents and TBI
contains further information.

To recreate these folders - provided they're not corrupted - create
one or more new folders in The Bat!. Remember their names and close
The Bat!. Go to The Bat!'s mail files in your file manager and open
one of your newly created folders. Overwrite the existing TBB and TBI
files with the ones you found. Start The Bat! and see what is in your
new folders.

Where do people put their Mail Folder?

2007-07-30 Thread Doug Weller
Hi
I'm moving TheBat! to a new computer with Vista, and it's offering me a
choice of where to put my Mail folder. I'll be the only one using it.
I opted for C:\Program Files\The Bat\Mail, but Vista has told me access
denied.
I know there's got to be a way around that but where do people keep their
folder and why?
Thanks

Ah, and although I found a discussion of how to do this, I didn't
understand it after all. I'm not clear whether I will have similar
problems if I use the Default application folder.

I have a backup of my whole mail folder I want to install, if that is
relevant, and I intend to do backups in the future of the mail folder not
using the built in archive mechanism. I want this to be easy.
Thanks again.

Minimize button on Vista mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have however noticed a small annoyance, when I'm using Aero and
click the window minimize button at the top right I get the Menu
Navigator instead. I have to click at the right side of the button
to be able to minimize the window.

Is there anyone that can confirm this?

Cannot confirm when running non-accelerated Aero-eqsue interface.

I'd suggest turning off the MenuNavigation (Options - Preferences -
General - Display MenuNavigator...).

I keep it in the default location, which is %APPDATA%\The Bat!. This
ties The Bat! to my Windows logon (which, for my multi-user computer
is a good thing). It also is within a folder hierarchy (C:\Users\my
username) that my account has unfettered access to.

Ok I will try that.

But does anyone know why the Bat might have done it in the first place?

Because maybe someday it will happen again and I won't realize it has happened
until it is too late to save the messages. I have not been using the bat for

might not be the case next time.

If it is something I did, then I want to make sure not to do it again.

if it is a bug, then it is a very serious one and needs to be looked into

In case it matters, I am storing my mail in My Documents in a folder for the

This key combo solved my problem with deleted folders still being
physically present. I was able to recover some lost folders
containing a few messages. Once I cleared out the messsages and
deleted the folder, they were physically removed as well.

Try the undocumented key combo ctrl+alt+shift+L while the focus
is on the folder pane. It is supposed to reveal lost folders.

Now I can go on to test Aid4Mail and see if its problems have gone
away.

Re[3]: folders disappeared

2007-07-30 Thread Brenda

 Ok I will try that.

OK this below was written before Peter's last response to the list but I hadn't
sent it yet.

First I tried the way you said with one folder. It worked! (I made a new place
in the directory tree just in case.)

I should mention... if you make a new empty folder, it doesn't have those 2
files in it. I just copied the 2 files from the copies that were in the
original subfolders.. I didn't have to delete files in the newly created
subfolders as far as I can remember.)

(Needless to say, I have a backup of the folders that are messed up. I also
have the bat set to do backups. I could just be restoring most of the stuff
from backups.)

Then I got more daring and decided to try just putting the subfolder names back
into the bat without doing any copying of files. At first this seemed to work.
It asks if you want to make a directory when there is already a directory. I
said ok.

Then when I got to the 7th and 8th subfolders, nothing showed up even though
there should have been stuff in the folders because there were those 2 files in
the original folders. I thought well maybe it is because those mails had been
deleted or moved, and the folder wasn't compressed. but I tried to do it again.
I forget if I did it the way you said or the way I was trying to do it. Anyway
this time the 8th folder came back but the 7th folder did not. So that would
seem to say it was not because the mails were moved or deleted. Otherwise the
8th folder wouldn't have come back on the 2nd try either.

I went through all the folders and got them all back except the 7th folder
mentioned above. I have tried a few times to get it back and it won't come
back. (Well as far as I know i got them all back... because I have to go by
memory.)

I do not know if there are any missing emails in those folders. Just that each
folder got mail put back in it when I recreated it in the Bat's folder pane.

I don't know if there is any problem yet like mails with the wrong subject or
duplicate copies etc. I was just glad to get them back.

I am not really sure yet how to read the files in the folders because they have
garbage or code type characters in them. (to see if there should be files in
the 7th folder or not)

Should i be reporting this problem of all subfolders going missing as a bug
somewhere?

I am now afraid to manually move directories in the bat because after I did
that was when I lost these folders.

I agree about making regular backups.

I thought I had the bat set up to do backups every 4 days or something like
that, but I can't find where to set automatic backups now.

When I tried to go into Tools/Restore, nothing was listed.

Data corruption occurs every now and then. That's why back ups are

Well I agree that every program can possibly lose data and that backups should
be made. But it still needs to be looked into by the developers if users are
losing folders.

Do the developers read this list?

It doesn't, as long as there is enough disc space.

I have over 60 gig free.
