Thanks for the reply Tom. As far as I can tell all of the relevant accounts 
have the "Keeping in message bodies" option set. I've never used the other 
option. I'm wondering whether there was a problem with restoring backups & 
attachments at some point. From time to time when I change laptop I will 
restore a backup rather than copy of the message base. One of the frustrating 
things is that there seems to be no pattern as far as the age of the message is 
concerned. Some older messages have attachments which I can access whereas some 
newer ones are inaccessible (even in the same folder).
