I was on vacation for a 3-day weekend, and am just now having time to 
reply.

I followed your most recent instructions above - I turned off all 
synchronizing modes but did subscribe to the Gmail IMAP folders.  That 
seems to work well.  Thank you for that tip.  I hope at some point 
your notes above make their way into the TB help files.

So far, it seems to be working fine - just as you describe above.

I have no idea of how huge a task that is, but I think it would make 
TB more popular at IMAP sites (Gmail, fastmail.fm, etc.).
