My apologies for replying to my own post but I felt the need to close this query
since I figured out the solution but not the problem. The solution was to click
on the "file" option at the top of the opened address book which I eventually
did in desperation. I was presented with a list of ABDs to click on, one of
which was JLF.ABD, her initials. Opening that ABD file restored her address book
to what it was. The question remains unanswered however as to how that address
book "JLF.ABD" got closed in the first place.

My thanks to anyone who attempted to answer my original query.
