AFAIK, this is intended behaviour. The 'send' toolbar button always
sent messages immediately despite any other settings you may use.

Not very friendly for those who like using the mouse but this is how
it has been since as far as I can remember. It does however give you
the means to bypass your confirmation or 'queue in outbox' setup so
that a message may be sent immediately without changing
configuration.

SG 2. Purge and compress all your folders (especially the Inbox) on
SG exit.

The key here is to compress the inbox regularly. This may be
achieved by enabling compression of the inbox folder on exit by
enabling 'compress' in the folder properties.

All incoming messages are added to the inbox message base. Even
thought they may be immediately filtered they're still added and the
only way to truly delete them is to compress the folder.

If you keep TB! running for days and you receive thousands of
messages per day then you may need to do intermittent manual
compressions.

You should do this with any folder in which mail is deleted often.

This is a known shortcoming of TB! which we hope will soon be dealt
with once and for all. If you run a single manual filter then you
could use the hotkey facility located in the 'options' of the filter
rule configuration panel; making sure that the option 'check the
selected message against this rule' is not enabled. This will allow
you to apply the filter at a keystroke to any amount of selected
messages in any folder.

CL one now, thanks for the tip!

You could have transformed your original address book into a blue one by
going into the properties and disabling the option 'this address book is
associated with an LDAP server.

I'd advise that you not keep your addresses in address books associated
with LDAP servers. That's if you plan to do LDAP searches.

DH A kind of public telephone book, you can search for e-mail
DH addresses.

CL sounds good, but i wonder how well it actually works. Have you ever
CL found it usefull? Does one have to register with this LDAP's? And/or
CL Are they harvested by spambots?

If you wish to look up an e-mail address, then hit the search button on
the toolbar or hit F7 with the address book open.

This will bring up a popup dialog. You can then fill in the particulars of
the search and then choose where you wish to perform the search. You can
choose one of your personal address book/address book groups or you can
choose an LDAP server associated address book or you can choose a
combination.

If you choose an LDAP server associated address book and hit 'start', TB!
will connect to the LDAP server the address book is configured to use, and
the server will be searched. The results will be listed in *both* the
Search results and in the LDAP associated address book. The contents of
the LDAP address book and the search results will be overwritten with each
search done on the associated LDAP server!!! So, if you have personal
addresses in the LDAP address book and do a search on it, they will be
overwritten. If you found an address you wish to keep, then copy it over
to your personal address book before performing another LDAP search. I
learnt this the hard way. Luckily I had a backup.

If you do a search on your address books that are not LDAP server
associated, then the search results will be displayed only in the search
results.

So, the search result field will display *all* addresses found and will be
overwritten with each search. The LDAP server address book will display
addresses found only on the server with which it is associated and the
results will be overwritten with each search. With this arrangement, if
you do multiple LDAP server searches, you'd then be able to tell which
address was found where, and you can peruse all the addresses found,
together, in the search results.

Hope that helps. :-)

Yes. Hit the Folder column header with the left mouse button. A popup will

and the folders will be rearranged in alphabetical order.

N Well. The filter goes perfectly, but the messages are not deleted from

This is exactly how it works. The filter action marks the message for
deletion and this is done during the next POP check. The message will not
be downloaded twice.

If you wish messages to be deleted during the same POP check then you have
to use the settings in the account options.

AFAIK, TB! has no inherent functionality to strip HTML from the messages.

I personally use a local mail server, MDaemon, to do this. I've heard
mention of using an external application to process the mail upon receipt
before they reach the inbox by way of the filter action to run an external
application. I'm not sure if anyone has actually done or is presently
using such a method.

Do you know where your mail folders are. If they're in the default
location, look in the TB! installation directory in the Mail subdirectory.
Each account has it's own folder with each folder in the account being
represented by its own explorer folder. Open the folder that's causing the
error (i.e., the folder that TB! is opening upon startup) and move the
messages.tbb and messages.tbi files to another location. TB! should now
restart but the folder with the corrupted message base will be empty.

As to recovering the message base if TB! cannot repair it then you're in
trouble. I can't stress too much the importance of backing up your mail in
case of these eventualities. What version of TB! are you running? Be sure
that you're the latest version because, IRC, there were problems with
repairing message bases in earlier versions.

This is very likely no fault of yours but that of your ISP. Messages
addressed to your domain address is being placed into your ISP domain

write a note to your ISP postmaster and tell him what's happening since
you have no control over what mail reaches which POP account.

This is a bug in the TB! version that you're using. Download the latest

Hmmm. Upon testing it, it doesn't work when I create a new message using

For Chema:

This happened to me before and to prevent this you have to be precise. You
wish only requests from private senders to be replied to and you don't
wish replies to trigger the filter.

To do this I'd enable regular expressions in the filter options.

For the filter strings I'd include the following:

String: ^SendMyPGPKeys\s*$ Location: Subject Presence: Yes

String: (TBUDL|TBTECH|TBBETA|PGP-Basics)@ Location: Sender Presence: No

The regex in the first string defined will prevent your autoresponder
being triggered by Re: SendMyPGPKeys

The second will prevent the autorespnder being triggered if the message is
from any of the defined addresses. You can stick in other e-mail usernames
as you need.

For John Hammett:

Marck covered your problem in his lecture. ;-)

I deliberately posted that method to peak curiosity, not to be impolite.

TF Yeah, the little problem with the PC-Cillin / TB combination is that
TF you never know which mail exactly cotnained the virus. You don't even
TF know which account was effected.

I personally use DrWeb and have the same problem in that Dr Web will
detect the virus but will not be able to tell me exactly which message
it's associated with. It will only tell me which message base is involved.
I then search for the attachment.

Of course, if you have the attachments stored separately, Dr Web will
locate the virus. It will again not be able to tell you which message it
came from.

HM OK, but if I store the attachments in the message bodies ?

Same problem.

HM Right now they're separated in the Account Properties. If I put them
HM together I'll be able to tell which message contained the virus. Right
HM ? Wrong ?

AFAIK and you still will not be able to tell.

Wouldn't the anti-virus program have to be optimised to handle TB message
bases in order to locate and extract just the virus from the message base
file? Otherwise it will delete the entire message base when you ask that
the infected file be deleted.

The only way I can see you knowing exactly which message is infected is
when the message is scanned upon receipt or you manually scan attachments.

Just select the filter rule and hit CTRL+C or right click it and select
copy. You can then open the other accounts filter rule and paste it in by
using the same menu. However, AFAICS, you can only copy or move single
filter rules at a time. If you need to move entire filter sets, this will
therefore be tedious.

Closing TB! and copying over the account.srx files between accounts will
be more efficient.

Where did you download that thebat.exe from? Was it a .rar file that you
downloaded or a file called the_bat.exe. The .rar archive doesn't contain
an installation program but a file thebat.exe which you need to manually
copy to the TB! installation directory, overwriting the old one in the
process. OTOH, the_bat.exe is a full installation file which you have to

MAC First, is it possible to have multiple POP accounts share common mail
MAC folders within a single Inbox?

With the use of filters, yes. However, you'd still have to create the
seven accounts you mentioned and you'll have to create filters for all the
accounts to move the messages to the desired folders in the main account
you wish to work. Not a very good solution if it involves so many
accounts.

The other options:

There are free services available that will forward mail for multiple
e-mail accounts to a single POP account where you can then download all
the messages from.

Another solution would be to run your own local mail server. It's not as
involved or overhead intensive as it sounds. I'd recommend it to anyone
who has to manage many remote POP accounts and wishes to funnel the
traffic to only one or two TB! accounts. You can then use the SMTP server
that comes with the mail server. One that I'd recommend is Mercury/32
because it's free, takes up little resources (~3MB of RAM) and would make
managing those accounts via a single TB! account a snap. TB!, with a local
server, would make a better solution for this purpose than any client out
there that supports personalities and multi-POP accounts.

Personally, I use MDaemon on my desktop machine here. It's excellent (more
feature rich), but it's not freeware and uses more resources.

TM Or is there a way I can create one with TB?

Alt-M-G ... and choose from the list of colour groups?

Another way is to create your shortcut by creating a manual filter rule,
define a shortcut for it and make the action to change the colour group to
what you wish. You can then change any message's colour group by selecting
the message and hitting the shortcut. The filter will only work in the
account it was created but you could copy it to other accounts.

If you need to create such a list toggle off autoformat (Shift-Ctrl-F) and

Did you change your screen resolution in and around the ticker problems.
If you change your screen resolution when the ticker is at the edge of the

screen and there's no means to retrieve it, except by going into the
registry and tinkering with the ticker position values.

EF hasn't.

It sounds like an application interaction.

I've had problems with the ticker disappearing while running virtual
desktop software. Otherwise, I've had no problems across versions.

Others had experience where the ticker disappeared and this was usually
after a resolution change after changing monitors, moving their TB!
installation to another machine, registry settings and all.

If you're problem is transient/sporadic, I'd look at an application
interaction as the culprit.

I use TB!'s editor with Forte' Agent, and also use it for some other
editing tasks. The reformat routines are done in such a way that I can use
Power Pro to create keyboard macros that make me able to do some
interesting formatting with a single macro shortcut. One example is the
ability to place the cursor in the middle of a quoted paragraph, hit my
macro shortcut (shift+del), which splits the paragraph into two parts
separated by three lines, reflowing both parts, and then leaving cursor at
the beginning of the second of the three lines separating the two
reformatted parts. I can then just type my comments. :-)

I looked at Becky's editor to try to create a similar ability. No go.
Forte' Agent's editor? .. forget it all manual labour. This is why OE
users will just quote the whole message and write the reply above the
quote. Too much work to make comments and reformat the quotes.

TM Are you willing to share this? g

Sure. However, you need PowerPro http://home.inforamp.net/~crs2086/, or
some other macro utility installed. This is the macro in PowerPro format:

.{back}{en}{en}{en}{en}%l{up}{up}

Auto-format must be enabled for it to work. If you don't have auto-format
enabled, you could include instructions to enable it before executing the
above commands and then disabling it afterwards.

What the macro does is the following:

.{back}
Insert a 'period' (this could be any other character) and then delete it
by doing a backspace. This leads to a reflow of the paragraph if
auto-format is enabled.

{en}{en}{en}{en}
This splits up the paragraph so that they are separated by three blank
lines. The cursor will be at the beginning of the second part which needs
reflowing.

%l
This is the Alt+L command that will reflow the other part.

{up}{up}
This moves the cursor to where you'd wish to start typing between the
paragraphs.

PowerPro is freeware. It can make TB!'s editor quite powerful and
convenient to use. A friend of mine created a PowerPro macro to reflow the
entire text, multiple paragraphs and all. I don't use it so I ditched it
some time ago.

The editor may be quirky in places but it creates possibilities. Most
other editors in other mailers are more conventional but are devoid of
these possibilities. The formatting I produce with TB!'s editor quite
effortlessly would be really tedious in these other editors.

WM possible (or necessary) in TB! They didn't say they had a limit but
WM suggested 250kb chunks.

Yes, TB! will send large attachments. Using Winzip to compress the PDF
file before sending would help save a lot on size to transfer. If the
recipient can't handle the zipped archive then she'll just have to send it
as is.

TB! has no problem with sending multiple megabyte attachments. However,
you have to ensure that the recipient has a POP account large enough to
accept the attachment you wish to send. Also, some ISP's place a limit on
the size message that their SMTP server will accept for transfer. I'm
quite sure this isn't 250KB though. :-)

If you need to send the file in chunks you can get a freeware file
splitter and split the file up in increments or you could use Winzip to
create incremented archives (I'm not absolutely sure that Winzip will do
this since I use 'WinRAR'). I doubt that you'll have to resort to this
though. About what size attachment are we dealing with here?

NA notice that once he stopped using his QT, his messages are beginning to
NA thread properly for those of us who thread by Subject. :o)

Ok. I had a look at the regex macro in his QT. I see that he has a space
that shouldn't be there.

His regex macro reads :

%Subject=Re: %SetPattRegExp=(?i)\A\:?((\s*(re|aw|...
 ^
 note the space here.

When it should read:

%Subject=Re:%SetPattRegExp=(?i)\A\:?((\s*(re|aw|

For some reason these regexs generate an extra space so I don't put a
space in front of them when using them. My personal subject cleaning regex
macro doesn't contain the space either and yet a space appears after the
'Re:' when the subject is generated. I think this is the likely source of
the problem and if he removes the space he should be able to use the QT
without problems. Why the extra space doesn't show up in *his* subject is
interesting.

I'd like to second the request for a Drafts box. And while we're at it,
It would be nice if any subfolders one creates under the 'Sent' folder,
would behave the same like having a header 'Saved' instead of
 'Received'.

NA I'm not sure if this would be of any help, but you can do away with the
NA Received column, and change it to Saved just by right clicking on the
NA Message List Colums under the Sent Folder, and choosing at will. :o)

You won't have a saved column available to you in the case of subfolders
to the Sent folder.

Re: strange (at least to me) behavior on sending to outbox

NA It does if you wanted the message saved, instead of being sent.

TF No. If you wanted to save it as draft, you would have clicked the icon
TF save draft and not put letter in outbox.

TF I am greatly annoyed by this additional unwanted and unnecessary
TF query.

Which additional query is that?

Auto-save creates a current draft of the message being edited at the
specified time interval. If you have 'immediate delivery' enabled and
choose to send, the message is simply sent and the draft deleted. If you
wish to cancel the message, then a popup appears asking if you wish to
delete the draft as well. This is new and appreciated since I hated having
to go and manually delete the draft.

The problem now seems to be with deferred deliveries. There are two ways
of deferring. You could hit Shift+F2 which works just fine, i.e., the
message is placed in the outbox and drafts removed, no prompts appearing.
However, if you use CTRL+Enter, pop-ups appear asking questions about
saving. Very inappropriate and buggy. This behaviour appeared after the
implemented wish that CTRL+Enter be made to obey the mode of delivery
defined in the account options. In fact, I didn't wish to save the message
but send it, so I said no to both queries and the message was deleted and
*not sent*!!

In TB! *save* and *save as draft* seem pretty synonymous. If I use CTRL+S
(save), the message is saved as a draft. Again confusing.

DH This definitely works. But why on earth does Ctrl+Enter trigger

I fully agree.

CTRL+Enter was recently made to obey the delivery settings in the account
options. This probably started at that point. I deliver messages
immediately so upon hitting CTRL+Enter, I get no prompts. Shift+F2,
doesn't generate the prompts either.

MRH Too offer my perspective on your observation, I have tended to find
MRH the versions of TB! that have been released since the 1.4x series to
MRH be a lot quicker at folder access. I have around 67,000 messages in
MRH the account as a whole with my largest folder accounting for just
MRH over 20,000 of those. The whole account message base has a file size
MRH of 451MB and when I access the biggest folder it takes an average of
MRH 7 seconds to display the contents. My PC has similar hardware to you
MRH (PIII 550) but with more memory so maybe that helps some.

MRH Most of my folders (those with 6000 messages or less) tend to be
MRH accessible in just 2-3 seconds or less. Mostly, the access seems
MRH instantaneous for any folder with 2000 messages in.

MRH I could probably do some good by purging and compressing myself
MRH (haven't done that in a while) but overall I'd say TB! was coping
MRH admirably.

MRH I don't know if any of the above is helpful but it should provide a
MRH counter view perhaps.

Processor speed and memory have been mentioned but nothing about hard
disk performance when this could be significantly different between both
your systems. When I upgraded my hard disk to a much faster one, there was
dramatic improvement in how quickly TB! handled large message bases. I
don't really see a significant pause in the speed of folders being opened
until I exceed approximately 6000 messages in a folder where the access
time reaches about 2 seconds. With my old hard disk, it was tedious to
work with a folder containing such a large message base.

ACM I thought I'd let you all know, since it was announced on TBBETA,
ACM that v1.53 of The Bat! was just released today. It's highly
ACM recommended since it includes some important and useful new
ACM enhancements as well as many bug fixes.

PM Thanks Allie, it works quite fine here! :o))

I'm not the type to advise quick updates but this is one of them:

An important fix has also been released. It fixes a few bugs that most are
bound to encounter and it also packs an important enhancement to address
the deletion of auto-saved versions of cancelled messages:

[*] Prompt to keep the message when a new message was automatically saved
and then abandoned

[-] Bug when sending messages right from the editor when Autosave is
switched on (in versions before 1.52 it was producing additional drafts in
the Outbox folder)

[-] Right mouse button click on a filter was not selecting the clicked
filter

[-] Sending messages from all accounts did not bring the Connection Centre
in front

[-] The Modified indicator works better than in 1.53

You can download the update here:

  http://www.ritlabs.com/the_bat/beta.html

It's just an update of the executable (v1.53bis). So, after shutting down
TB!, simply decompress the archive directly into your TB! installation
directory, overwriting the older executable.

I wouldn't send the message again unless the recipient confirms no

I would surmise that she's using the auto-save option and this would

JE Thanks. Yes, External Image Viewer is toggled on. If I
JE double-click a GIF in Explorer, it opens with Fireworks. If I
JE double-click on a GIF in TB!, it opens with MS Picture Viewer.

This still sounds like a Windows problem since TB!, AFAIK, simply takes
the association from Windows and uses it. TB! opens ACDSee as it should
for me.

What flavour of Windows are you using? Indicating this information very
briefly in your signature can be very helpful.

DAC While checking my TBUDL mail just now, I noticed that I had flagged a
DAC message containing how to information because when I have some extra
DAC time I want to go back and use that information to fiddle with some
DAC templates. I realized that because I usually review my messages
DAC based upon creation time, quite likely that flag will sink toward the
DAC bottom and I will never see it again by the time I have the time to
DAC need the reminder.

The advanced filtering may help in this regard. You can set TB! to display
only flagged messages.

Another tool is alt+left clicking on items in the message list. This will
lead to only entries with what you alt+clicked on will be displayed. So
you could alt+click on the flag of a flagged message and only flagged
messages will be displayed. This display will lock across folders so you
could then move to other folders which in turn will display only flagged
messages. You switch back to the complete list by hitting the escape key.

ACM Another tool is alt+left clicking on items in the message list.

TF This won't work. If you have a hundred folders, you you would have to
TF to click on each one of them to see whether there are any flagged
TF messages.

How about parked messages then or ones you've specially colour labelled?

If you forgot where the message is, this is where the search can also come
in. It will search in a folder, in a folder and it's sub-folders, a whole
account or all accounts. In the advanced tab of the search utility, you
can toggle on 'message is flagged' and it will search for only flagged
messages.

There are ways to deal with the problem without adding folder markers.

No, you're not breaking a list rule by mentioning the existence of betas
or RC's. :-))

We just don't encourage discussing bugs associated with them on TBUDL or
offering information on functionality that's only confined to beta's or
RC's on TBUDL without categorically stating so. We're just trying not to
create confusion as has happened in the past. Members will start thinking
that a bug/feature that's really in a beta is in the official release and
threads will develop into sub-threads dedicated to clarifying this sort of
confusion that may arise.

However, you're little mentioning of the latest RC of v1.53 was well
worded and perfectly welcome on this list.

Also fellow members ...

Just remember that if you choose to use this or any future RC's or betas,
which you're welcome to do, send all queries directly to Ritlabs; or even
better, join the TBBETA list where you can discuss issues that concern you
with other users and even the developers (they read and sometimes take
part in the discussions there).

One example would be the quoting of what someone wrote in message and

Another situation is when reading message digests like from TBUDL.

R Another feature could be where a single 'account' can check multiple
R 'pop'. I have a few web based mail accounts which allow for pop access
R and also subscribe for multiple newsletters. If I could use a single
R account to check for all these accounts, I could reduce the number of
R accounts - making he display more pleasing.

Ai Did you tried to filter all messages to a single account's inbox?

Ai It should do what you asked for...

Another way would be to use one of those freeware POP servers. Install it.
Create a local POP account, configure it to download mail from all those
remote POP accounts. Finally set up TB! to download mail from the local
POP account ... POP server - localhost, password - the one you configured.

Two freeware apps that come to mind include Mercury/32 and the other is
Hamster. Mercury is better since it has better documentation. It has a
relatively small memory footprint. See:

http://www.pmail.com/overviews/ovw_mercwin.htm

If you use multiple POP accounts then you may also have problems with
sending messages using a single ISP SMTP server. Mercury will help you
here as well since it comes packaged with a fully functional SMTP server
module.

There are two disadvantages with filtering from one account to another.
One is that you'd have to still create accounts for each remote POP
account. The other is that the only way to filter to another account and
use the main accounts filters is to redirect the messages to the main
account. This will lead to message header adjustments. To prevent this
you'd have to create filters for each account and do the filtering from
each account directly to the main accounts folders.

Using a local POP server will prevent your having to create multiple
accounts in TB!. You'll have no problems with filtering and the messages
will be unaltered.

Be that as it may, the enigmatic version 2 of TB! is slated to have
multiple POP server support per account.

TB! normally keeps track of what is downloaded and marks them for deletion
upon the next mail check. Are you having premature disconnections when
checking mail. This could cause the problem.
