Hi

However, by chance I've found that TB! isn't picking up all my emails. They
are all there on the server, I've even reset the missing ones as unread but
it still won't see them. All my other clients like my iphone see them no

IMAP and attachments

2013-05-07 Thread Barry
Hi

With the current version I have decided to revisit IMAP4 mail handling. It
all seems to be working quite well other than handling attachments.

A attachments are received as 'part.att' which means I can't open them with
their default programs. I can, however, save the attached file and rename
it with the correct file extension which seems to work.

Any suggestions how I can repair this odd behaviour?

I am using V5.3.8 with Windows 7

Many thanks

Just to follow up, I asked this question previously and Marck suggested I
check the message source, which I did and all seems as it should, so I am
of the opinion that for whatever reason TB isn't handling the attachment
correctly.

Or maybe I have an incorrect setting?

IMAP and attachments

2013-02-10 Thread Barry
Hi

My office fax system sends an email out when a fax is either sent or
received. The fax is attached as a PDF file. Recently since I've moved over
to IMAP I've noticed that the attachment is always named 'part.att' when it
should be of the form filename.pdf.

If I save and rename the attachment with a .pdf extension I can view the
file but it seems an unnecessary action. I have checked with the fax
software vendor and they can throw no light on it, so I'm starting to
suspect TheBat! And IMAP. When I used POP3 it was never an issue.

Any ideas?

Thanks

My first and most likely suspect in this instance would be the IMAP
server software. When in IMAP mode, The Bat! can only show you what the
server tells it is available. I know that attachments I receive come
through exactly as I would expect them.

You should inspect the message source and check the headers in the
attachment section of the message, which should include some of e.g.

 Content-Type: application/octet-stream; name=part.att
 Content-Description: part.att Content-Disposition: attachment;
 filename=part.att; size=;

This would demonstrate that the server configuration is at fault by
 forcing an inappropriate attachment name.

Dear Mark

Well, yes I would agree were it not for the fact that my iPhone (which is
also using IMAP) works as intended, so I'm of the opinion that it is
TheBat! that is not getting things quite right.

But I'll take a look at the headers in any event. Thanks for the tip.

Transfer from old to new PC

2013-01-05 Thread Barry
Hi all

I'm setting up a new PC and I intend to use IMAP. So far so good but I
would like to transfer all my settings from my old setup without any
emails.

I've installed 5.3.6.0 on the new machine and IMAP seems so far to be
working well. My old system was based around POP3 and will serve as a
backup of old mail.

Is there a straight forward way to do this?

TIA

Hi Thomas

The problem seems to lie with the action of parking the message. If I remove
that action from the filter then all works OK. If I include the action to
park the message then the original message remains in the Inbox with the Park
flag set.

So I guess it's a buglet?

2011-05-31 Thread Barry
Hi

I have a filter that has been in use for many years that filters all emails

This has worked well for a long time but since the upgrade to V5 has stopped
functioning properly, it's almost as if the message is parked before it is

Move to the folder \\Barry\Fax Server\Received
Mark the message as read
Mark the message as parked.

Near disaster averted with 5.0.8

2011-04-14 Thread Barry
Hi

Now I don't know how this came about, but thank goodness for backups!

I installed 5.0.8 last weekend, unbeknown to me there is an option in the
Additional Folder Properties to Remove Old Messages on Exit. This box was
ticked, I am positive I didn't tick it, but the other two options to
designate either the maximum number of stored messages or the number of days
to keep messages in the base were NOT ticked.

Nonetheless all my messages in the Inbox were removed the first time I exited
V5.0.8, all 16,000 of them! Worryingly I couldn't recover them by browsing
deleted messages they had vanished forever. Thankfully my weekly system
backup had the message base file intact so it turned out to be a relatively
simple process to import the message base for that folder.

Needless to say I've been through ALL the folder properties to make sure the
option is unticked, but as to how got ticked in the first place is a bit of a
mystery.

Be warned!

If you've noticed it whilst trying to print a message, I wonder if your

I had a similar problem earlier this week with another program that was

HTML Mail with links to Graphics

Can any one suggest any way that I might improve the speed of this process.

Well, I've disabled/removed ASS and it hasn't made any improvement at all,

14 January 2000, 23:09:00 (11-Feb-2008 15:42:09 CET)

I'm assuming that the email is created in the CET time zone, hence the date
in brackets, and that the date shown as 14 January 2000, 23:09:00 is the
date converted to my time zone, which should be GMT.

Is this a function of Windows, TheBat! or a bit of both?

How do I get it to show the correct date?

So how does this compare with your template?

If the problem is an incorrect format, you can export the file to a
unix mailbox format, edit the format to correct it and then re-import
the message. If you are more daring you could edit the messages.tbb
file in the appropriate mail folder directly, but that is more risky.

I don't really want to be messing about editing incoming emails, if the
conversion is an error with the sender's data, then I'll inform them. On the
other hand if the problem is with TheBat! then it needs reporting as a bug, I
guess?

It seems to me that if I there are mails on the server that have been read

If..then..else in macros

2007-02-20 Thread Barry
Hi all

Is there an If..then construct in the macros?

I would like to set up a macro that checks for the account being used in a
new message or a reply and then based on the account include a particular
file. I've tried using the address book but the problem i seems to be that TB
uses the first name found in the address book and in my setup I have the same
name and email address for several entries. But they are used in different
accounts so if I could tie to the account rather than the name it would work
for me, I think?

e.g.

In Account 1 I send to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and include file1
In Account 2 I send to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and include file2

Look forward to seeing your responses.

My Sigs are getting bigger than my messages!

2007-01-17 Thread Barry
Hi all

Some of you may be aware of the recent change in UK Company law that
requires certain information to be included on web sites and in emails,
viz:

Every company needs to list its company registration number, place of
registration and registered office address on its website and in emails.

Now that's OK, but I have a number of different signatures in my address
book for specific contacts and groups.

Keeping on top of these changes is in danger of becoming a major task!

What I would like to do is have a central location (a small text file
perhaps?) that contains this required information that is automatically
added to the end of every email on an account basis.

Can this be done?

If it can, how?

I look forward to your suggestions! ;)

Company registration number and place of registration (e.g. company
registered in England and Wales)

Do you have TB! set to check accounts automatically at intervals?

I used to have no check on start up, followed by check at 15min; and
15min after start up my accounts would then be checked automatically.

After a recent upgrade this changed so that even with check on startup
off TB! would still check accounts on startup if a check interval was set.

So I turned them all off and check when I remember! ;)

For me I expected the first check to be carried out after the first
interval.

Then if I wanted a check on startup I could ask for that.

On your LAN to your local mail server that can be your computer name, as
it's likely that that will point to the right computer (it does on my

 name or a literal address.

My knowledge on this subject is 'nil', hence my original post. However, my
newsreader (Dialog) has an 'Advanced SMTP Settings' dialog which allows the
user to specifically set the SMTP HELO identification. If it is left blank
then the local computer name is used.

To me that seems a good solution?

In my case shouldn't HELO be kentra.co.uk?

Hi Roelof

I wanted an good alternative to AVG so I could eliminate AVG as the cause
without losing my AV protection. So, no, it hasn't made any difference. I
still suspect my ISP's mail servers, but, of course, when asked everything
is OK at their end so it MUST be either my firewall or my AV program,

Mind you, I think NOD seems pretty good. All I need now are some viruses

Spam Filtering

2006-01-17 Thread Barry
Hi all

I've noticed that I'm now starting to get spams that ask for reading
confirmation and it occurred to me that some users may unknowingly have
their computers set to automatically reply to such requests, therefore
giving the spammers confirmation of a bone fide email address.

I have my system set up to prompt me before sending reading confirmations,
but I wondered what the default TB action was and also if it was possible
to set up a filter to ignore reading confirmations unless, say the sender
was in your address book?

Well, for sure, but I've been running 'FileMon' and it seems to me that
BayesIt isn't working quite right. It seems as if it tries to open
~stat.bin as well as stat.bin. Unfortunately ~stat.bin doesn't exist. I

My filtering is working very well. I use whitelist and blacklist

I just sometimes look at the stats for interest and was surprised to see

Well, I've been down this road also, so you're not alone Edvinas.

I seem to recall that the problem occurs when the mail folder is not in the
'default' location, i.e. as part of the TB program folder group.

IIRC I *think* I got over the problem by creating two 'dummy' files using
notepad and manually copying them to the 'new' Bayesit location.

Once BayesIt managed to write some extra entries to this location then
everything worked OK afterwards.

Make doubly sure that the folder locations are EXACTLY where they should be
in the Bayeit options. And, make sure that you haven't got TWO copies of
BayesIt installed in different locations.

I had these problems a few versions ago and up to now subsequent program
'upgrades' have worked OK.

Good Luck!

What Triggers 'Read' Filter

Hi

I know this may be a really dumb question!

But what actually triggers the 'Read' filter?

Is it the action of actually reading the mail OR is it the fact that a mail
has been read?

I ask because I would like a filter that moves mails that have been read
and are of a certain age to a specified folder.

I want to archive certain messages when they reach a specific age and I
have read them.

I tried the 'Alternative deletion method for purging folders' but it
doesn't seem to work the way I want as my archive folder ends up with
messages I don't want to keep.

Or maybe I just can't see the obvious.

Got it!

It's a Bayesit install issue.

Somehow TB thought that my installation of Bayesit was still 0.8.0 even
though the plugin selected was the correct file, 0.8.1

It was a bugger to get TB to recognise the newest plugin file but
perseverance prevailed.

Finally I had to find the location of the language file (*.lng) and once
that was correctly selected everything now seems to be OK.

I suspect that the problem was due to the fact that my plugin was not
located in the default place. I have my Mail Folder on a different
partition which is where the Bayesit Plugin was also located.

Why all these problems and hassle if Spambayes can do all the work for you
with just a little bit of training?

Hi Dick,

I can use Mailwasher Pro VERY successfully. I'm just trying to find an
integrated solution that works.

So far it hasn't, but I like the challenge. :-)

And there's no doubt that for me the RegEx filters have improved
performance greatly.

I've no doubt that SpamBayes works very well, but it's yet another program
that has to be run alongside the multitude of other 'utilities' that seem
to clog up my taskbar on a regular basis.

So I'll give Bayesit a month and if it doesn't work after that I'll go back
to Mailwasher Pro, which does.

Hi Roman,

See my reply to Dick.

I used to use K9 with great success, but for me Mailwasher Pro is the top
dog!

It seems odd to me that some people seem to claim great things of Bayesit,
yet for others, like me, it doesn't seem to work.

Similarly great claims are made for Bayes Filter, and yet, for me, it just
doesn't work.

I agree with your comment re the lack of documentation.

I'll continue my experiment.

More observation on Bayesit!

2005-02-21 Thread Barry
Hi

Well I'm still persevering!

I've now transcribed 83 different regex rules over to Bayesit. I extracted
them from my copy of MailWasher.

This seems to have made a dramatic improvement in spam catching. I've now
reduced the spam failures from 100% (really!) to below 54% in two days.
Looking at the logs it appears that the rules catch the majority of
offenders..

If anyone else would like to try my rule set let me know and I'll email the
file over.

Don't you just love computers!

I've since re-applied 0.8.0 now that I've got the dictionaries created.

I was having a look at the Bayesit log file and I noticed that after every
use of TheBat! I was getting:

17.02.2005 15:03:46 Current recalculation session is interrupted.

When I use TheBat! to check my email I'll start the program to download the
mail and if there is nothing of interest I'll junk the Spam and close the
program down. Normally this doesn't take longer a minute thanks to my ADSL
connection.

Could this be that this isn't sufficient time for Bayesit to retrain and
rewrite the dictionaries as a background operation?

And, if it isn't could this be an area of the program that needs revising?

After all, I can't be the only person that uses TheBat! in this way?

Why am I finding BayesIt so difficult?

2005-02-17 Thread Barry
Hi

Well, this is my 3rd and last attempt to get BayesIt to work. I guess I've
wasted enough time with it now.

I removed all traces of BayesIt from my install 'cos it just wasn't
working, despite it having over 1,000 spam mails to train on which I had
downloaded from TheBatWorld web site. I reckoned that these along with my
1500 good emails was enough training material for anyone!

Having a clean install I now find that BayesIt is complaining that the
dictionaries are either corrupt or not there.

Well its right on that one; they aren't there!

But surely on a new install Bayesit should create two blank dictionaries?

So what gives?

At the moment I have reinstalled, tried to train with 1000 Spams and 1500
good mails, but Bayesit complains that there are no dictionaries.

Any suggestions most gratefully received.

Hi Roelof

Yes I did, and that's what I'm finding so frustrating. I think I am doing
everything as I should but it just doesn't want to work.

The first time I was told by Marck that there wasn't enough spam in the
dictionary for it to work. OK, I accepted that that was why the mails were
only getting a score of 0.

The second time I came across the BatWorld spam message files so I tried
them that gave me over a 1000 spam mails plus over a 1000 of my own good
mails to train it with.

Then everything was being scored 99!

I don't like being beaten so I decided to try again with a clean install
but now I don't appear to have any dictionaries.

Mail Washer Pro is beginning to look very attractive! :-)
