This is now becoming intolerable and unless I can find a fix I have to choose
between an earlier TB, and lose full access to GMAIL, or keep the current one
and have it lock up every time I close the Windows Remote DEesktop cconnection
to the remote Windows 7 PC it is running on.

I suspect a file or something from my previous legacy version is lurking
somewhere and effecting things. Some options show as corrupted fonts when I
manually run the Maintenance Centre, and one option, run on its own, locks up
TB completely, never completes its task and needs Task Manager to kill it.

I have never come across any application run remotely that "knows" the remote
connection has been closed and takes it upon itself to "do thing". How can this
occur and are there any logging options to help find the cause please?

Glad my finding Thomas' message was useful to you.

What would be a highly useful feature to me would be to have a function where
you command TB to make a new database mimicking the current ones structure, but
with all folders showing an Archive and pre date identifier.

So one would select an account, select a cut off month and year and tell it to
archive, the result being a separate database created on a destination medium
of user choice, containing only messages created or received pre whatever month
and year. The database remaining within TB would then only contain messages
created or received after the cut off date desired.

I am getting old and forgetful. It suddenly occurred to me that I had once
asked a similar question here, and as I have kept all messages from starting to
use TB! I found it for you. See below, Thomas Fernandez answered and although
based on an earlier TB! version his response should still be applicable, I
would have thought.

What I do is I "archive" old messages to other folders. For example, I
name a subfolder "2016" and then move all messages from that year into
that subfolder. This keep each folder with a manageable size. (Make
sure you compact the folders in which the messages were stored
previously.)

If you want to store those messages somewhere else, you create a dummy
account called "Archive". Under Account / Properties / Files &
Directories, you to an external drive or a drive in the cloud (nobody
uses tape or DVD any more). This way, you don't need to keep them on
your computer's hard disk.

Thomas.

As my sig hopefully shows I got v10.0.10 working. The only issue is it saw
duplicates (which really existed) in my address book, but the Bat! splash
screen hid the overwrite confirmation box and I had to keep using Task Manager
to get rid of the main splash screen to enable each confirmation. I deleted all
the duplicates in the end, and it has calmed down now :)

Only disappointment so far is that in my preferred threaded view mode the
interconnecting lines between messages have gone and are replaced by arrows and
unmarked indents. I do not suppose there's a way of getting the thread lines
back is there?

I have the message bases on my D: drive at D:\TB_Mail, and the basic TB! files
at C:\TheBat I installed V10 in the same C:\TheBat directory as the old one,
can I, once happy with V10, just delete the older files in there?

Thanks again.

This does indeed work fine, but I have two fairly minor issues. I
can't get back my Folder View modes and my Colour Groups, would anyone
know which files I need to grab from the old installation to copy to

folders need copying? Recreating these two settings is proving a
nightmare! Thanks for the help :)

Message in Outbox been being sent every three minutes for months

2018-05-23 Thread Chris Wilson

23 May 2018

My UK based ISP Zen Internet sent me a nasty e-mail saying a lot of
Spam mail was emanating from my PC yesterday. I run a legacy TB!
version v5.8.10 as I am very comfortable with it, but it has never
knowingly done the following before.

I had a filter set to forward from my main e-mail account
"chriswilson.tv" folder to my GMAIL account, so I can read it on my
phone when out and about. It appears that although any Spam I receive
at chriswilson.tv is also forwarded to my GMAIL account, this
particular mail did send, but remained in TB's Outbox. I poll the POP3
mail server at Zen every three minutes, and apparently every three
minutes since January this year TB! has attempted to send this Spam
e-mail. A recent review of mail security at Zen had them challenge
this with me and it resulted in them stopping my ability to send mail
through their servers altogether until I could explain what was
happening with my mail client r PC. An hour or so on the phone to them
today had me by chance look in the TB! Outbox and see a message sat
there that was one it was trying to forward to my GMAIL address. I
quoted the headers and Zen confirmed this was the single e-mail that
TB! had constantly been trying to push across their servers since
January!

Should this have been reflected back with a 500 authorization failure
by Zen or GMAIL, and even if not should TB! have just kept on trying
to push it through? Is there a workaround like TB! automatically
emptying the Outbox every night, and if so, how should I implement
that please? Thanks ;)

Does that work from forwarding via a filter though, as i haven't seen
any pop ups. Please bear in mind the age of this version of TB!,
perhaps it's something only available in later versions Stuart? Thanks
for the reply Stuart. redirecting wouldn't save a message on the PC
into which the message initially arrived though, would it? Cheers!

Sorry, the wife threw a Christmas party so it's been manic here I
removed all the continue filtering ticks and revised a few filter
orders. I also removed a few redundant ones. I am a lot of mailing
lists hence so many filters to send content to a dedicated folder.
Things are now infinitely better, thank you so very much! There are a
few anomalies, but I have now worked out how to put the messages back
in the Inbox and manually run a filter with logging to see what filter
is placing them incorrectly. I am ALMOST at a perfect situation!
Awesome, and greatly appreciated.

One question though. Mail with photo content or linkss to web sites,
when transferred to my phone via GMAIL loses that content and appears
plain text, with no photos or clickable links. That makes them fairly
useless. is there a means to have GMAIL show them on the phone as they
originally appeared on my main PC please?

I think with a final few tweaks to the order of filters things will be
nigh on 100% :) Again, thanks to all for tips and time spent!

2017-12-06 Thread Chris Wilson

Hello Stuart,

That's exactly how I did it, a second action after Move To : My Mail
Folder

I put a second action Forward To: (my GMAIL account)

But *every* mail that arrived to that PC was forwarded, not just the
ones which had been moved... Even placing that filter at the bottom of
the filter list made no difference, which i thought was odd. Thanks
for the idea though Stuart, much appreciated.

Filtering question

2017-12-06 Thread Chris Wilson

06 December 2017

I have a new Smartphone (Moto G4) and not being used to modern phones
it's taking me a while coming to terms with its abundant features!

I want TB! to forward mails that have been already filtered to my
personal mail folder (My Mail) on my home desktop PC to GMAIL so I can
reasd them on my phone. But when I add a rule to forward that mail to
my GMAIL address i get ALL mail coming to my chriswilson.tv account
forwarded to GMAIL. I tried moving the filter to the bottom of the
list but no change in that behaviour occurred.

The rules that work for TB! are

sender contains chriswilson.tv
OR
recipient contains chriswilson.tv

Action

Move messages to My Mail folder

All other messages generally and reliably get filtered to relevant
folders, they being mainly mailing list messages.

Can I force TB! to only forward mails that end up in My Mail folder on
to my GMAIL account?

Thanks I am running an older version of TB! as generally speaking I am
comfortable with it by now ;) I think the correct description for
people like myself is a Luddite!

Sorry to reply to my own mail, but I returned to the GMAIL web
interface and turned allow usage of less secure apps on and of a few
times, and finally left it on again. After a few mails from GMAIL
warning of the changes all is now well. It was definitely "ON" before,
but for whatever reason it didn't seem to take, unless the smartphone
is automagically changing it when it connects. But for now TB! is once
again accessing the account for both fetch and send, apologies for the
waste of bandwidth!

I am resurrecting this old thread as after a long period of access to

unauthorized access had been attempted from outside my area and to
change the password. I did this and whilst i can access the account

checked that the allow less secure apps was still active. Every time I
try and connect via TB! I get the box in the second image. My settings

several times with great care. Any ideas please? the "smartphone"
connects fine. Thanks! Oh, and I have put up an image of the log, too,

Thank you Tony /Thomas, knowing UK council departments it comes as no
real surprise that they have a blinkered outlook (excuse the pun) with
their mail system, I saw the garbled characters but wasn't sure if a
.msg file always had them when viewed with a plain text application.
Thanks again, this is a marvellous support group, it's helped me a
great deal, even when using a legacy version of TB!

Thanks for all the well detailed replies, I am happy to say I am now
able to read and write e-mail to my GMAIL account from within TB! I
set the GMAIL account to allow access to insecure apps, but I may try
and set it to OFF again and see if it is vital to connectivity. Thanks
again everyone!

As an aside, I am using an old V 5.8.10 TB!. I am quite happy with it
save for one thing that really bugs me. If I am reading a message in a
pre view pane and a new message arrives in that folder, I am
immediately slung out of it and the message is marked read. Does the
current version have this, to me, annoying trait?

All the best.

GMAIL account using The Bat!

2017-03-21 Thread Chris Wilson

Due to a blacksheep.org mailing list suddenly, after some years,
deciding posts from my normal POP3 mail account and service provider
have a high SPAM count and bouncing them I have had to subscribe using
a newly created GMAIL account. Is it possible to read and post
messages from within TB! as i hate using a web browser for e-mail? if
so a brief guide treating me as an imbecile would be much appreciated
;) Thanks!

Thanks, some groups were not using the senders e-mail address for

Thanks for all the help. The registry stuff was critical, I had a
cloned hard drive and decided to see what would happen if you DID NOT
save the registry entries and modify them to point to a different
drive. It's vital as TB! gets in a right mess and effectively seems to
create two account structures. And yes, it was necessary to point the
new installation to the desired attachments storage folder. The
address book and spell check stuff seemed to move with TB! without any
of my input. Done correctly I had no apparent issues and TB! was up

work fine, but one sends some mails in some odd format.
TB! won't read them without clicking on the html tab,
 or the part_01.txt tab.

This suggests to me that the messages are received in HTML format
without including a plaintext version, and with no text content in the
 HTML version.

I get occasional amusing emails forwarded to me where the text is
actually in an image file; sometimes these come as a blank message
body with the image attached, but once in a while they behave as you
 describe.

In my experience TB's internal backkup and restore is totally
unreliable, and has been for years. It should either be repaired or
removed !

I now use Second Copy, which you can trial with no usage restrictions
during the trial, or just RAR up the whole TB! directory structure and
transfer like that. I use RAR rather than ZIP as it seems the
resulting file is more compact, and its error checking is better.

Quite why something as important and basic as an internal backup and
restore function in an e-mail client remains broken and regularly
reported as such, while frivolities are added, I have no idea :(

Re: Backup files

2014-01-09 Thread Chris Wilson
Even though, within TheBat, a daily backup occurs, the backup file,
 C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\TheBat!\Autobackup.tbk\ is not being
copied to my external backup device (a memory stick) at all. My system
backup procedure has multiple tasks defined for every directory
(folder) that I want to backup, including a task for the directory
(folder) that contains Autobackup.TBK. Whew! That is a mouthful.

Note that this backup file is located in TheBat! directory and not in
the TheBat!\Backup directory. The TheBat!\Backup folder is, in fact,
 empty.

Note also that in the TheBat! directory there is a series of files,
 Autobackup.$1, .$2, .$3, .$4 and $.5, each one larger than the
previous one and each one with a later creation date starting in
October, 2012 when I have work done on the computer through November,
 2013.

As far as I can tell, the backup for TheBat is:

 --Standard
--No file name entered in the window for Backupfile

So, while TheBat is being backed-up at one level, the backup is
unprotected insofar as it is not copied to an external medium in the same
way that all of my personal files are backed up. The task to backup
TheBat! runs every night, but does not copy Autobackup.TBK to the
 external medium.

My question is: why does my backup task not recognize that
Autobackup.TBK is newer than the one on the backup medium. After all,
 it is recreated every night.

(Once I solve this problem, I will probably come back to the list to
ask for advice about the relative merit of Standard or Incremental
 backup.)

Thanks for you patience in reading this long note.

 Leonard

Since many TB! users are power users with huge databases it's sad that
TB!'s in built backup mechanism seems generally considered flawed and
unreliable. It cost me the loss of a lot of precious personal mail and
attachments recently. I now use a programme called Second Copy and
turn off TB!'s internal backup feature. I would say such an important
feature should be 100% reliable, or removed. When you need it you must
be able to rely on it!

I believe the Synchronize menu allows this, but if it works like

master copy across to other PC's. Frankly, I wouldn't trust
Synchronize unless a raft of current users said it was 100%
trustworthy, after some disasters with Backup and Restore. I have to
say that I am a bit perturbed that Ritlabs see fit to release V6.* at
the moment it seems so far from prime time. It doesn't inspire
confidence, to be frank. Was it to meet the perceived Christmas
marketplace?

Before I do so would someone storing messages in a separate directory
please see if they see the same? I thought it may be keeping a copy of
the attachment because *I* sent it, which would make sense as it
should also show in the sent mail folder, but I have also tried
deleting some messages from other people just sent to myself, with
attachments. The attachments are not deleted. I see a security issue
here, what if my wife finds these photos of my mistress, for example,

I keep seeing references to version 5.8.10 yet my 5.8.8 said it was
the current version right up until the release of V6.0

I also cannot see anything later than version 5.8.8 on Ritlab's site.

As for whether the OP should upgrade I was using the last of the V4.*
releases for years. I suffered fairly regular corruption of message
bases, shown when I used the Maintenance Centre facility. I also
suffered the odd total crash of TB! when a message with either
something in the headers it disliked, or some facet of my filtering it
disliked, occurred. These all seem resolved in 5.8.8 and I have no
regrets at all about updating. I paid an update fee and went from V4.*
Professional to V5.8.8 Home, as I didn't really need the extras of the
Pro version.

I will hold off going to V6.* until it's a lot more mature.

M For what it's worth, ticking the log filtering results box appears
M to make no difference. The results of the Test Filters function do
M not appear in the account log. Maybe they are written to another file
M somewhere, but I have never felt the need to look for one.

Nowhere do I see an option to log filtering results.

I can only assume the difference in our versions is causing the disparity.
 I've
never used the right-click test filters option anyway. I usually use the
FOLDER + RE-FILTER and then only if I've created a new filter or modified an
 old
one. Even then I'm only interested in whether the filter worked or not and
 not
in how it worked. I can see however how such information might help in
determining why a new or modified folder failed to work. I'll try it next
 time.

The one thing I learned early on, was to set Global View Mode to No View
Mode and leave it there. I see no purpose for it and if you set it to
anything but No View Mode it just takes over everything. Isn't that
 what global means?

It is a good, fast way to set all your folders to the way you always want to
 read your email
I have too many folders to even think about trying this, but I
wonder if you set it to a specific view mode globally and then go
back to no view mode would the settings done globally stay where
they are but now you have the ability to change them?

I have set my own global view mode that I call Generic View Mode
with messasges threaded and in reverse date order, and it is behaving
itself so far. I then use the folder View tabs to genersate waht
folder by folder view mode I want, (All,[which is therer by
default],Today, Yesterday, This Week, Unread, and Flagged. So far so
good since deleting the CONFIG.CDB file and letting TB! recreate it
and re-setting as required. Still think it's close to broken as a
facility, and trust it as far as I can throw it ;)

And I really see no great advantage in it over No View Mode, just
wanted to see if behaved now I know what to do if it doesn't, and I
have secure back ups.!
