When I added the account, it filled the account randomly from top to bottom. I
seem to remember there was a way to sort all the subfolders in one fell swoop,
rather than moving them around one at a time which is going to take for ever.

Yes, but only if you had automatic timed sending of queued mail. I
have never had The Bat! set to automatically send queued mail. As such
prior to the version that introduced postponed sending, I could (and
regularly did) have a message that I put in the outbox for days before

I've been using TB! since 2002, and as far as I remember when I put

I have always had gmail automatically forward my incoming mail to my

well, but means I have very little, or no, contact with gmail.

messages and Thunderbird is a good way of testing whether the problem
 is server or client related.

There have been lots who complain that Bat IMAP is unworkable, but I
continue to find it superior over all to anything else. I only have
one account, which has 62 folders, and nearly 54,000 messages. It
collects all my POP accounts, and all my gmail gets forwarded there. I

I also use thunderbird occasionally for testing, and on a regular

Looking forward to beta testing the new IMAP, expecting to set up

compacting on closure, or searching, etc, doesn't access those folders.
The password is easy to remember ('password') because it's just to keep
the archived material out of the way unless I need it. So I never move

even worse is when they don't even wrap, but there is good reason for

 and all
of TB's filtering of the inbox to the folders therefore takes place at
 server level?

actually, you make use of the IMAP filters. This works better than
filtering locally, because otherwise, sometimes you are filtering with
one machine sometimes with the other, and when you need a new filter,
you'll need it on each machine,

If I have local folders on the home machine but not on the work
machine, moving messages from the server to the local folders will
delete it from the server and therefore from the folder structure on
the work machine (which only replicates that on the server)?

It took me a minute to sort out what you said here, but yes, when you
archive, it's only one place. You could work around that, perhaps by
copying what you are going to delete on the first machine, before
archiving on the second. Whether something like that would be
necessary would possibly depend on what your quota is. Mine is 600 mb,
and I've never gotten past 50 or 60% of that. I still only archive
every couple of months or longer, except one mailing list I'm on which
sometimes hits around five thousand messages in a month.

Quite a change from the familiar way of doing things under POP...

I am not sure I understand the concept of common folders, could you expand a
 bit.

common folders are just what the name implies. They are a tree of
folders which are not related to any particular account, but can
receive mail from any of them. If, for example, one gets mail from
some relatives in one account and others from another, one could have
a common family folder and filter mail from both accounts there.

DC get an IMAP account, and set it up to collect all your pop mail

Could you suggest a free IMAP provider to test it out with TB?
Last time I tried it was pretty flaky.

www.fastmail.net has a guest account which includes 10 mb of storage
and 40 mb monthly band width. I have never used their free services
and have no idea how intrusive any ads might be, but I've been totally
happy with their subscription services. I think there are a number of
fastmail subscribers on tb lists and I've never heard any complaints.

What is the point of parking messages if you park them all? To me the
whole notion of parking a message is to make it impossible to delete.
Why one should be able to delete a parked message by moving it flies
in the face of the whole notion. I can't drive to the mall and have
my car be parked at the same time. My messages used to get organized
by filters, and be where I wanted them. Now with IMAP they get
organized before they ever hit my machine. Once they are where I want
them, if they are important enough, I might park them. But if I had
50,000 or so parked messages, parking wouldn't mean much any more.

Put differently, if everything was 'parked' how would I recognize the
messages which were important enough to park?
