Re: Missing macro
Hello everyone, Many many years ago, when I first started using TheBat, I set up all my new, reply and forwarding templates. I have only tweaked them since. During a PC rebuild I decided to re-install TheBat from scratch. Since all my e-mail is now IMAP I decided to leave behind all the lost folders and random other stuff that I thought that I no longer needed. I grabbed lots of my templates and macros and dropped them into a text file but I appear to have overlooked the recipient driver from my forwarding template. I'm certain that I just took this from a repository of templates, probably here: http://cgi.silverstones.com/library.php but this no longer works, for me at least. Does anyone out there have the aforementioned macro? From memory, I understand that I can't extract these macros from my backups; I'd have to reinstall my whole backup and then extract the macro from the editor. Virtual folder meltdown
Hello, Last week I had a problem with the POP3 servers for one of my mail accounts. As a temporary measure, I set up another account using IMAP. This was OK, but I found that the Bat's IMAP ability pretty much in line with the low expectations that I had harboured for many years. One of the problems was that the virtual folders (my primary way of viewing mail) just didn't seem to keep up. Lots of duplicate messages and false unreads were the main complaints. Once my POP3 servers were up again, I deleted the IMAP accounts, expecting to go back to my old reliable Bat! Now I find that the virtual folders still don't work properly. Unread mails are counted twice and it takes a restart to clear the unread count (even though there are no unread messages in any real folders). I'm getting desperate now. I've tried a full restore of the Bat! file structure (copy from a ghosted disk, not the Bat's internal system) and a restore of the registry. Any suggestions? Hello, On Wednesday, May 21, 2008, you wrote: RO Another method would be to view everything as plain text only. But looking at the message source it might actually point to www.somecompany.com/+lots_of_highly_identifiable_information, or worse; there's no reason that the link would even be for the domain that somecompany.com. Re: Voyager
I see that data is being written to my USB stick for approx 20 seconds after Voyager appears to close; at that point I am able to remove the device safely. This is what I meant in my earlier post. What I am confused about is: What data is being written for so long? Any idea? CW In order to increase overall system performance, Windows often buffers CW reads and writes. After a flurry of activity when closing The Bat!, CW Windows probably waits a while for things to settle down before CW committing the changes to the disk. CW If you use the Safely Remove Devices applet, Windows will flush the CW buffers immediately and (perhaps) allow you to remove the device CW sooner. Or you just disable disk's (or stick's) write caching? From explorer... Disk: properties-harware-properties-policies = Enable write caching This will make operation a bit slower, but all changes will be immediately committed to disk. More shortcut woes
Hello, So having recently fixed my connection centre shortcut problem (thanks), I've been trying to repair my display only unread messages shortcut. I can see that show all is ctrl-= from the view menu, but can't find the corresponding entry in the customize menu. Am I missing something fundamental, or is the even more obscure than before? -- Nick TheBat!: v3.5.25 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 2 Current version is 3.5.25 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: TheBat on Mac? Tips please...
Hello Dragan, My question here is then - could you recommend an email client for Mac that can do similar things? Don't worry, you're in good hands! The default Mac Mail uses the GNU Mail.app which *I* reckon to be the best all-round mailer out there. Lots of intuitive features (like thread selection) and a very clean look. Just don't expect much help from the Mac forums... it's a different world :-( -- Nick Temporarily on Evolution 2.2 under Gentoo Linux (better than Outlook, but that's not saying much) Current version is 3.5.25 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: Re[2]: TheBat on Mac? Tips please...
Finding a decent news app will be your problem (have a look at Gemini). Ah, but OSX has got X! If you google for Fink (http://fink.sourceforge.net/) you'll see how to run just about any Linux (or *nix) newsreader that you like. Contrary to what this sounds, it's really not too difficult or messy to do. Hello, Version 3.5.25: where can i change/add shortcuts? MB From the main TB! window, drop-down menu, choose MB View/Toolbars/Customise. View modes
Hello, My view modes don't seem to work - at all. TB 3.5 has picked them up from my old 3.0.1.33 but: - Right-clicking on different view modes in the header has no effect - If I make changes from the setup columns option it always selects the same view mode, are changes are ignored anyway - Manage view modes has no effect Is this just me? Next step is a clean install I suppose, but how would I make sure that my view modes are ignored? Bayesit - how does it mark a message as spam?
Hello, I'm going through one of my irregular explorations of anti-SPAM technology, as popfile just seems to grind slower and slower. Although it must be said that it's almost perfect in terms of accuracy. One of the things that I really like about popfile is that I can get TB to delete spam from the server once identified. Aside from the fact that mails are put into a spam folder by bayesit, I can't find any other sign in the message. That's Mozilla's new calendar app. Don't get me started, I've been keeping an eye on this for some time now ;-) I'm a borderline complete linux user and have habitually tried to avoid MS wherever possible. Sometimes however there's a) no getting away from what it can offer b) no getting away from clients who use it The main reason for my using OL right now is that is syncs so nicely with my Orange M2000 and its Pocket Informant calendar/contact/task app. I'm plugging away with the synce and multisync (opensync) projects on linux, but in the meantime... back to my question. -- Nick Current version is 3.0.1.33 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: Maintenance Steps?
Hello, Any issues here? Am I missing a maintenance step or two? ASK None that I'd know of. Using a normal defrag program will do the same as ASK the defragmentation in BayesIT (and more, of course). ASK In some special cases, a real defrag program will work better Drifting a bit OT here, I was interested to read this article from the UK's PCPro mag: http://www.pcpro.co.uk/realworld/68124/avalon-on-xp/page3.html Look for Putting on the Frighteners about half way down. This ties in with my experience that, when my diskeeper software had for some reason failed to run its scheduled defrag for about 6 months I noticed absolutely no change in system performance. This is contrast to my old fat16 experiences when a decent defrag could make quite a significant (though subjective) difference. -- Nick Current version is 3.0.1.33 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: Anyone using OnSpeed with The Bat!?
Last time I was away, it cost me 640 GBP in telephone costs to keep my clients websites maintained and to access email. A Hmmm... why not a laptop with a local ISP sub? That's about decade's worth of A dial-up in the US (Netscape $ US 9.95/Mo, 5 GBP after conversion?)! Can't be A that much more expensive in Canada. I've been using Gric for a long time now. It's a roaming service that seems to partner with a lot of UK ISPs. Download the latest list of dial-up numbers before you leave, then when you tell it your new location it will show all available local numbers. Your regular ISP logon will work on the partnered systems. However, recently I've found that hotel broadband for about $10 US /day is a good bet. Even better, I never seem to be far away from an unsecured WiFi connection which I use for my POPs that support secure communications. Apple stores are also a great place to connect for free - although I feel the need to boot into Linux at the time so as not to be too rude ;-) -- Nick TheBat! v3.0.1.33 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 2 Current version is 3.0.1.33 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: TB on Linux
Hello Nav, N Has anyone tried running TB on Linux using Wine? There's plenty in the archives, but for my money (or lack of it!) Wine is as good as Crossover with TB. It runs, but you have to take a bit of are with what you click on in the UI. N Does Ritlabs have any plans to release Linux version of TB. N I really don't like windows, but TB is holding me up :) Perhaps one reason that Ritlabs is holding back is that most of the Linux e-mail clients offer a lot of the power (regex) functionality already. OK, you have to pipe out to a command line, but this shouldn't be a problem to anyone who's regexing. I've recently been playing with Evolution, and this strikes me as a great compromise between user simplicity and power. It's the kind of thing that I *could* see myself recommending to friends and family. It also managed to import all my contact and calendar information from Windows in one hit. That's a first for me. -- Nick Current version is 3.0.1.33 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
