Re: Where to I forward invalid HTML??
Strangely enough, it doesn't indicate any email address for forwarding the message. Do they want it? Do they care? How hard am I supposed to research where to send it?? From the shores of this list and other TB-related lists I would say Ritlabs is pretty non-interested in bug issues. It seems the focus is on developing, not fixing - go figure. Agreed... - having a problem with proper detection of e-mails coding (happens only in TB!) ; well, e-mail is properly detected but displayed encoding is not (need to manually click on something else and back on the encoding that was selected by TB! to have it properly displayed). Reported to developers long before previous Bug Tracker crashed ; developers were provided with sample e-mail and nothing happened. - (for instance) Allegro.pl newsletter e-mails (have mini photos) freezes my computer for 10-15s (OC 1090T (6 cores)) ; TB! takes up to 25-35% of CPU and to display that message memory usage jumps from 80MB to 135-140MB, - After over a year (soon is going to be 2 years) TB! is still not properly showing messages that have Traditional and Simplified Chinese in the same message (one of them is garbage), - Voyager sync issues (software is to be written so a average person can use use ; if you need a knowledge of the software to sync it properly and there are no proper messages from the application that causes sync to fail and you need to spend time to find out a way it's wrong). After 24 years with computers I do not find problem to use any software but Voyager did make me to give up (did sync properly twice, the third there was no sync). BTW, idea of the need for USB stick over twice as big as your database is a wrong approach (my database is at the moment 9GB so only 32GB USB stick can hold it ; if smaller used there is no client message but it just freeze in the middle of the process)... - and many others... I'd say that unless a feature is annoyingly broken and a lot of people is yelling at Ritlabs (remember IMAP support?) an error can go unfixed for years. And if it hasn't been fixed by then it will never be fixed. Yep. Funny is that when I did use TB! for a first time it was version 4 and I was a student (no money to spare but quite content with TB!4 :)). The impression got me back to Ritlab and after I started working I decided to move from Thunderbird to TB! and finally I bought a license but for 99% that would be all for me... As W8 got on the market (that I do not plan to use) I do check at the moment Linux distributions and it's likely to be end of my journey with Ritlab (within next 4-6 month). Personally I do not see the reason why to struggle with Wine under Linux to stick to TB!. Pity that due to policy of Ritlab of implementing new features but not giving a *** about old bugs (unless as mentioned many people are yelling at them) they did loose a customer that was telling other people that TB! is great (since I was using TB!4) and than after the license was bough and TB!5 was used for a month ; the customer started to speak out a bit less (now is keeping his mouth shut and if asked about TB! says: it's quite good but has a lot of bugs and you get it installed only on your responsibility (I'm not to be blamed). I do like the program but I'm tired of: - manual switching of coding ; paste-copy operations if replaying to Traditional/Simplified Chinese e-mails (need manually replace garbage parts), - freezing computer if e-mail have more photos than average, - the fact that TBK is not storing all preferences and user-decisions (ex: icon size or some other interface changes ; approved web-pages for images download ; ), - the fact that AutoBackup kicks in twice a week despite that it's not selected in options (I did use it before but wanted to stop ; the autobackup information must be stored in TBK file and everytime I do recover from TBK it kicks in ; no way to turn it off), - the failure of Voyager OR if to call it politely not-average-person user-friendly (and IMO illogical) sync scheme (so I can't install TB! on my desktop and use Voyager while traveling (average of 4-5 month a year). -- Best Regards, RS (FEDARA) The Bat! 5.3.4 Windows 7 x64 Professional (7601 Service Pack 1) POP3 accounts (x5) Tuesday, December 18, 2012 (12:59 ; GMT+8) Current version is 5.2.2 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: Problems sending mail
Hi Code, Code 5/1/2012, 12:08:09: SEND - Access violation at address 00405D77 Code in module 'thebat.exe'. Read of address 3290F25C Code I use The Bat! version 4.2.44.2. Never had such problem. I would make a full Backup of TB! and remove/reinstall a client to the same version I use (or/and first I would try v5 to see if there is still a problem). Don't forget to mark 'Store external attachments in message body'. Removing of entries in the registry when TB! is uninstalled might be good as well but I do hate manual play with registry... make a registry backup prior to playing with it so you have a chance to restore it. As for clearing registry probably other people here can tell you much more. If you want to go back later on to v4 I would use an original TBK backup rather than the one from v5 and added manually received/send out e-mails. To make it easier I would install TB! v5 without internet connection and created rules to save EML messages on Receive and on Send in separated folders (in that way if you decide to go back to v4 and get e-mails you send/received while on v5 it's just enough to Drag And Drop e-mails from a folder on HDD into a proper folder in TB! (in my case it would be RECEIVED GENERAL and SEND GENERAL - I move all e-mails to one folder before filtering - and apply filtering CTRL+F). I would make a copy of TB! folder as well - worked for me before to manually swap data into newly installed TB!. Just in case. If reinstalled v5 and v4 are still not working properly I would reinstall OS (it's fast for me because I restore it from OS image to about 90% of what I use daily ; about 30min for restore process and about 1-2 hour for downloading OS and other software updates). If you need to reinstall all the stuff it will take much longer. If you can make a try first on other machine with importing your TBK and checking if it all works good on other computer I would recommend it prior to removing it from your machine. On a clean computer TB! should work properly after TBK is imported. If you install it on a clean machine use 3rd party program to monitor which parts of registry are modified (it will help you to get this part out of registry on your computer). That would be all on my side ; sorry, but nothing else comes to my mind. -- Best Regards, RS (FEDARA) The Bat! 5.1.2 Windows 7 x64 Professional (7601 Service Pack 1) POP3 accounts (x5) Wednesday, May 2, 2012 (03:14 ; GMT+8) Current version is 4.2.42 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: License Agreement
Hi jb, Hello TB! Users, When the TB! licence says that it can only be used on one computer at a time, does that mean that I can install a single licensed version on my PC and Laptop as long as I don't use both at the same time? It's my understanding of the Agreement that you can install it on any machine as long as you don't use both of them at the same time (ex: desktop as a main and notebook when you travel). When moving data I do export TBK from one machine and import it to a newly installed version on the other machine. Takes me an hour to move it from one machine to another but is easier than looking for messages that were already filtered out to relevant folders. I could purchase a second copy of TB! later on but not at the current stage of development. You could try to use Voyager if you purchase Pro version but for me Voyager at the current version is not something I will use. However, I'm sure that many people like it and use without issues. Apart of the size of my database (6GB ; you need over 13GB free space on USB drive to import data base and sync later on) I was not able to properly sync it second time (created during sync file was seen by TB! as a Read Error). Tried to sync for over 2 hours with 12GB free space on the drive (apart of 6GB already taken by installed Voyager) and I gave up. At least for me sync process is not so obvious as it should be (maybe 22 years of using computers is not enough or maybe a process is not simple enough for me :) ). One more thing about Voyager, I did observe some 3-8s hang-ups of TB! while I was using it and was sending out an e-mail. Nothing terrible and happened only while sending out, probably due to modification of database on USB. Used USB was USB3.0 (Mach3 Extreme 32GB (on USB2.0 about 32MB/s write ; USB3.0 about 85MB/s write)) so it should be fast enough ; tested on a desktop with USB3.0 and notebook 2.0. Maybe this delays were due to database, no idea here ; have none on normal HDD. BTW, you can install Voyager only 5 times ; not sure what happens if you want to use it later on. So far, I used 2 of this 5 spots. Might try it again in a couple of month if there is a new version available. -- Best Regards, RS (FEDARA) The Bat! 5.1.2 Windows 7 x64 Professional (7601 Service Pack 1) POP3 accounts (x5) Friday, April 27, 2012 (19:10 ; GMT+8) Current version is 4.2.42 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: Old files, file extension questions (Cache Matter :))
Hi Miles, Just a little off topic. I'm also the user of Shanghai telecom. I agree that its service is bad sometimes. But, trust me, the service of netcom(merged into unioncom now) is worse. Perhaps we can discuss those things in private mails:-) Condolences about Shanghai Telecom ;) Never tied a mix you've mentioned and not going to :) -- Best Regards, RS (FEDARA) The Bat! 4.2.44.2 Windows 7 x64 Professional (7601 Service Pack 1) Friday, August 12, 2011 (11:41 ; GMT+8) Current version is 4.2.42 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: Old files, file extension questions (Cache Matter :))
Hi Rick, Am I assuming correctly that the files in TheBat cache are unnecessary (except for those currently in use)? In other words, safe to delete all files from cache as part of regular maintenance? I delete the Cache and the imgfiles folder several time a day. I view a lot of graphics and things can get out of control quickly. I have a batch file to do it on the fly, but it is part of my Ccleaner routine too I wish to have an option to save a cache with a TBK backup file :) And an option in Message Maintenance to clean cached files for messages that were removed would be a nice feature :) I don't know why but it's getting longer on TB! (even up to 1 minute) than on Thunderbird (3-15 seconds mostly) to get external link pictures in the messages downloaded. Not mentioning that due to the fact that I live in Shanghai sometimes the links embedded in the message are not possible to be downloaded from some foreign servers (with a high ping and sometimes Time Out up to 50%) - service quality I know, so I do not complain here just dreaming at the moment :) I'm on DianXin, biggest Internet provider in China and as it always is with biggest service they give you sucks... unfortunately I can't have installed any other. Just if anyone in China wonders if to install WanTong - I had it before I moved to new apartment and it was 'flying'. -- Best Regards, RS (FEDARA) The Bat! 4.2.44.2 Windows 7 x64 Professional (7601 Service Pack 1) Wednesday, August 10, 2011 (11:50 ; GMT+8) Current version is 4.2.42 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: unable to restore backup
Hi Luc, However, this causes TB! to hang ... The backup file is 1.7 G ... I had a problem with hanging process while trying to restore selected folders (option while restoring backup) from a backup file. Worked good when I restored a whole backup to a clean installation. Backup file size shouldn't matter - my backup has over 3GB at the moment and works good while restored. -- Best Regards, RS (FEDARA) The Bat! 4.2.44.2 Windows 7 x64 Professional (7601 Service Pack 1) Tuesday, July 12, 2011 (15:24 ; GMT+8) Current version is 4.2.42 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
v5. key usage with v4. version
Hi All, Might be interesting for some of you guys. I had contact RITLAB if it's allowed to use v5. key with v4. TB! - RITLAB update concerning the matter bellow: v5.xx key is also valid for several last v4.xx, including v4.2.44. Register your copy of The Bat! using it. Successfully registered version 4.2.44.2 with a v5. licence key. Now it's written that client is registered and valid up to v6.0.99. Very nice of RITLAB to allow you to do that. -- Best Regards, RS (FEDARA) The Bat! 4.2.44.2 Windows 7 x64 Professional (7601 Service Pack 1) Saturday, July 9, 2011 (15:11 ; GMT+8) Current version is 4.2.42 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: TB 5.0 could be a Guinness world record holder
Hi MFPA, However, that won't stop the losing of folders. That's been a 'feature' of TB! for as long as I can remember :( Thankfully you can spread your fingers a bit and hit Alt+Ctrl+Shift+L simultaneously regularly to recover what TB! forgets about. A strange, unresolved 'feature' with a fix. That matter is rather a stop over - just my opinion. If there is such an issue in my team ; it wouldn't be tolerated. I see people write about this from time to time; I have used TB! since 2004 and only experienced lost folders three times, twice after updating TB! and once after a major reworking of my folder structure. I've also experienced the same folders appearing two or three times in the folder tree a couple of times. You're lucky ; happened to me a couple of times within last two month. Latest about 2 minutes ago when I couldn't find a full folder substructure... After Ctrl+Shift+Alt+L visible again but Folder View is lost in all subfolders. After restart still here. Isn't it fashionable at the moment to release a new major version number that is no different from the previous one? Witness Firefox 5. FF 5 is different from v4 - slower :) -- Best Regards, RS (FEDARA) The Bat! 4.2.44.2 Windows 7 x64 Professional (7601 Service Pack 1) Wednesday, July 6, 2011 (10:55 ; GMT+8) Current version is 4.2.42 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: Which version should I upgrade to?
Hi Mary, RS (FEDARA) wrote: Do they allow usage of v4 if a client have v5 licence? Yes, I e-mailed Ritlabs to ask how I should proceed, and they told me to upgrade to v5 (with a 30% discount), then e-mail them with the serial number and they'll give me a registration key valid for v4.x. Thanks for sharing info with us. If I understood correctly you're to be given a new key for v4 after e-mailing them a v5 key. What about future use of purchased v5 key when v5 release works stable? Will you be able to use a key you purchase now and they downgrade or you'll have to purchase new licence/upgrade? -- Best Regards, RS (FEDARA) The Bat! 4.2.44.2 Windows 7 x64 Professional (7601 Service Pack 1) Tuesday, July 5, 2011 (02:08 ; GMT+8) Current version is 4.2.42 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: Which version should I upgrade to?
Hi MFPA, I have a v1.60h business edition licence, so I'm not sure how I should upgrade. It isn't clear from the website, but I assume I'll have to buy a licence from scratch. I'll try e-mailing them, anyway. You get a 30% discount on a v5 licence if you already have an earlier licence. But the matter here is not to move to v5 version that is not ready as a marketing product yet but to v4. Do they allow usage of v4 if a client have v5 licence? -- Best Regards, RS (FEDARA) The Bat! 4.2.44.2 Windows 7 x64 Professional (7601 Service Pack 1) Monday, July 4, 2011 (11:26 ; GMT+8) Current version is 4.2.42 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: Which version should I upgrade to?
Hi Mary, Are there any major problems with v4.2.44 that I should be aware of? Moved back from version 5 to 4.2.44 due to all reported by me issues. So far none of them happened in v.4 (almost 4 weeks) ; except that for some e-mails while replying there is no text at all after Reply Window pop ups. Change a Text format to any text and back to what you had makes message appears. Imported over 29k messages and works fine. Will test new release when I have more time - maybe next week.. :( -- Best Regards, RS (FEDARA) The Bat! 4.2.44.2 Windows 7 x64 Professional (7601 Service Pack 1) Thursday, June 30, 2011 (21:01 ; GMT+8) Current version is 4.2.42 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
