You don't NEED to copy the registry key. If you don't do it, you will have to
do a few extra steps like pasting your license key and a few other setting. I
have forgotten it or suffered a crash and it is not really a big deal. You
would want to get any custom dictionaries which I never do, and back up the
images folder in the program folder which I do since I have a ton of
customizations

The TBK file is the best solution IF it works and doesn't get corrupted

??? How so? I have my mail directory on my E:\ drive. You have to adjust the
path of the REG file that was in my example, but then it works

That is the ideal way if the TBK file doesn't go corrupt which I have had
happen several times. I personally don't trust it but you are correct - that is
the best way to do it

Copy your mail directory to somewhere where you can restore from.
Run this and change the path to where you want it to go and rename it to
something that makes sense for you as this example would put "test.reg" in the
"C:\test". i put mine in the mail directory
regedit /e c:\test\test.reg HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT

Also copy things like the images folder if you have customized smilies and any
customized dictionaries from the Bat's program folder (or just export them and
import them into the new installation)

Did you have an abnormal reboot? You might try searching that mail folder for
that file just in case it got movied
I use another goodie called "Everything" from voidtools.com It searches all
your hard drives instantly. The have a portable installation but I use the full
install. Just start typing a file name (wildcard work) and it if is there it
will show. A right click gives the usual options plus "Open path" that opens
Windows explorer and highlights the file
VERY handy!

I think it is SHIFT / CONTROL / ALT L
It will restore hidden folders including dictionaries, imgfiles etc but also
the ones that were accidentally removed from the bat

Try it. It will pop a message as to how many folders it found

If that does NOT do it there is one more trick that can be done

Yes it is an issue with IMAP and Gmail. The bat does not clean out the "ALL
MAIL" folder nor the spam folder. You have to access the web every so often and
clean it yourself. I reported it in bug tracker once but no one seemed worried
about it

@all...
Does anyone know if possible where to disable in antispamsniper
the 'leave mail at the server' option?

There is no such setting per se, but under the ACCOUNTS tab in the settings,
there are a couple of things to check out. I have NO servers in there and am
not having the problem, but you can add them and then configure all sorts of
things.

You might check with the Antispam sniper support

You can go in and edit the white list and the black list. It is a good idea to
go through them once in a while and remove anything that isn't right. See if
the Amazon mails were accidently black listed for instance and then add amazon
the white list (using wild cards and you feel appropriate

Yes you can revert. You can save out any new messages and import them to the
new location. If you are taking it into the shop, just copy the data folder to
your OS drive and put it back when you get the drive situation figured out

Jack
Move your mail directory from APDATA to MY Documents Restart the bat and mpint
the mail directory to the new location. If there is ANY issue go to windows
explorer and to your new mail folder and add yourself to the security lost with
full permissions and propagate it to all items in the folder. You can zip up
the original mail folder to the desktop for restoration in case something goes
HORRIBLY WRONG
Which it won't but you have a path to step back ward

You probably will not have to add yourself to the permission list not take
ownership of the folder
And yes, if you have permissions as ADMINISTRATOR or EVERYONE you should
logically NOT have to add your account name with full permissions. Agreed.
Microsoft Agrees. Yet it magically fixes just this type of issue

I have a small book of fixes that Microsoft swears you do not have to do yet
when you do them, the issue magically disappears

SOMEONE pressed CONTROL ALT DELETE L to recover folders and those were there

In earlier versions I think it was DELETE / Leave files on disk or something
like that DON't delete them to trash or worse WIPE them

Deleting is tricky. To the far right of each line there are 3 boxes. Select the
leftmost one an the list will drop down. Anu clicks or keys will close it
EXCEPT the down arrow. Arrow down to the offending address then hit the delete
key

It takes a steady hand. If the lost rolls up unexpectedly a couple of times -

How do I rectify the situation? I have tried to search for a solution, but
generally end up nowhere. I've spent the best part of a week trying to get my

Re: Voyager versus installed version

2015-06-06 Thread Rick
The one thing I miss in Voyager is the chance to associate it to the mailto:

I can't get mailto: urls to open in Voyager. I still guess it must be possible
somehow. I searched around, I asked here twice (still asking) but nobody came

The problem comes because voyager is portable and doesn't make registry entries

Re: No Certificate

2015-06-04 Thread Rick
 G'day,

Over the weekend, my web site host moved me to a new server as part of
an upgrade, and this has changed the SMTP and POP3 servers from
aus39.unlimited-space.com to now aus52.unlimited space. This requires
TLS on port 995 for POP3 and port 465 for SMTP.

I've made the necessary changes, however when I go to receive
messages, I get a message telling me that

The server didn't provide a root certificate during the session and
there is no corresponding root certificate in the addressbook.

When I go to check my mail, this pops up and all options other than
cancel and OK to continue anyway are greyed out.

 What to I do?

 The account log shows:

!04-06-15, 16:33:34: FETCH - TLS handshake failure. Invalid server

 So, what next?

Is this an issue with The Bat! or is it something to do with my
 web/mail host?

 Any help appreciated.

Thanks for all the help with moving to a new pc!
I'm actually back on the old pc, since the new one had a bad harddrive
 and will be exchanged.

Now I'm wondering, how to best change accounts to IMAP on TB.
Looks like I would have to create a new account.
But can the message bases, folders and filters be imported again, once
 the new account is created?

I always wondered if you could rearrange things with windows
explorer. ANyway, if you create the new IMAP accounts you can drag the
folders on the POP account into the IMAP folder or better yet into
folders that are not associated with an account if you have a ton of
saved mail that would otherwise sync back to the server

Your filters will figure out the changes when you drag them to the
IMAP folder but any templates in the address book, Account or folder
will have to be recreated and edited

go to Preferences, System and point them mail directory to the new drive and

Is there any option so that deleted junk mail disappears entirely?
Yes - you can create a folder to catch it then have it delete everything in
that folder with a filter. I use a shortcut key to mark the message, export it
yo a folder on the hard drive then delete it. I have a system hot key to call a
batch that packages it up for spamcop, send it then delete it from the hard
drive

I would be careful of having it delete everything that hits a folder. You might
accidentally delete something important.

Re: Backup Query

2015-01-21 Thread Rick

 Hello Everyone,

I have been running backups for several years twice weekly saving to
two different drives. Fortunately I never really needed them but I
sure would like to have a backup ready if disaster strikes.

Looking at the backup folders, I am confused as to the output files:

Backup 1 shows two files with different file names and extensions:
 a) TBBackup.TBKExt. tbk Modified 21/1/15 Created 23/10/13
  Size: 7.685,533 KB
 b) TBBackup.$1 Ext. $1 Modified 14/1/15 Created 14/1/15
 Size: 5,832,518 kb

 Backup 2 shows
 Weekly.TBK Ext tbk Modified 11/1/15 Created 27/10/13
 Size: 7,624,364

It seems that I set up one backup via system/preferences and the
second one via the scheduler, though both appear in the scheduler. I
assume that the backups only override the previous one, so only the
latest will be kept. Is that right or are there any settings as to how
many versions are to be kept?

The backup system is not smart although you can set it up any way you
want. A wise person would consider copying the entire mail database to
somewhere else. A winrar backup would do the trick. COpy the reg key
to the mail folder and it is doing everything the BAT backup is doing

I have had too many of them go corrupt and when that happens you are
SOL as it seems it is a proprietary format

Re: Can't open many messages

 Hello TBUDLs,

Yes it's me again with yet another problem.

Some months ago my wife had many (over a hundred?) messages refuse to
open with the error message that you'll find here:
 https://www.dropbox.com/s/rl36410qfhhjc21/2014-10-25%2013_49_45-The%20Bat%21.png?dl=0

They cannot be deleted using the trash can icon (because the same
message shows up) but possibly can be deleted using the keyboard
DELETE key. I say possibly because I was happily deleting them by
pressing DELETE/ENTER/DELETE/ENTER over and over when suddenly focus
moved to another message and I noticed that a message I had previously
deleted was still there. So I stopped doing that procedure and
thought it best to consult this list for info regarding positive
deletion, possibly thru the OS or even somehow getting these messages
 to be openable.

Create another folder - leave the name default if you wish. Drag all
the messages from the folder with the trouble to the new folder (Faux
Inbox is it's name?)
Go out to the first folder and delete any files in it (not subfolders
of course)
Drag the messages back and have your way with them

Without thinking I moved TB! to my new Windows 7 Pro 64 bit machine
from an elderly XP Pro 32 bit PC. Whilst TB! appears to work fine I
would like reassurance it will be happy long term on a 64 bit OS.
 Thanks.

It runs as a 32 bit program and is found in C:\Program Files (x86)\The Bat!
You shouldn't have any issues (that I know of) Even v 6 runs on XP so
I deduce that the basic architecture hasn't changed to the point where
older versions have been left behind. The one thing it WILL do is try
to put your data in the APPDATA folder for your account. That works if
several people will access the Bat's installation via different
accounts on the same computer. My wife and I were accessing the same
mail base so I had to change it, but happily, that worked fine

Re: Need Advice on Backing Up and Reinstalling

2014-02-17 Thread Rick

MG I am currently using The Bat! version 4.2.44.2 on a PC with a Windows 7
operating system.

MG I received an error message this morning saying that my copy of
MG Windows 7 was not a genuine one. It is genuine and came loaded on my laptop
from Dell.

MG I called Dell support, and after trying a number of other
MG workarounds, they've decided that my Windows 7 has become
MG corrupted--or at least some files on it have--and I need to have
MG the operating system reinstalled.

MG They will work with me on this, but obviously it means I'm going
MG to have to reinstall all my programs after the operating system is
MG re-done, and that includes The Bat!

MG My questions are three:

MG 1a. Will I be able to reinstall the same version of The Bat? It
MG has given me no problems, and I seem to be reading that people are
MG having problems with version 6. I still have the
MG thebat_pro_4-2-44.msi file from when I originally installed it and I do
have my Key Block.

MG 1b. If I have to use a newer version of The Bat! are there any
MG changes I need to know about that will affect my ability to
MG retrieve my mail from the backups?

MG 2. What files will I need to back up?

MG ---My mail directory setting in Preferences lists: %APPDATA%\The
MG Bat!\ I assume this means my mail directory is in
MG C:\Users\MSG\AppData\Roaming\TheBat!\Janus1 where MSG is my user
MG name and Janus1 is my mail account name. I already back up my
MG Users\MSG directory every night to an online backup site called IBackup.

MG ---In addition, I do an automatic daily backup to a file called
MG C:\TheBatBackups\Batbackup2.tbk This daily backup is set to back
MG up all address books and all accounts. This also is sent every night to the
IBackup site.

MG ---Is there anything else I need to back up in order to retrieve
MG all my mail after I reinstall TheBat!?

MG 3. After I reinstall TheBat! I will copy my backed up Users\MSG
MG file onto my computer. Do I also have to restore the .tbk file to
MG The Bat! or will just moving the previous User folder be enough?

MG Thanks for any help.

Let the more knowledgeable chime in but there was a database change
with v5 and if you run v5 or later, it is not backwardly compatible

Back up your RIT reg key and put it in your mail folder then ARCHIVE
it and move it somewhere off the machine, or at least the C:\ drive
The Bat's backup can be flakey. I tried it and had about a third of
the files unusable and unable to restore them

Check your private mail in about 5 minutes for something that may make
all this moot :)

Re: Attaching an e-mail to another e-mail

2014-01-24 Thread Rick
I want to send an e-mail that has a separate e-mail attached to it. I do not
wish to embed the e-mail that I wish to attach into the body of the text of
the e-mail that I am sending. How do I accomplish this?

Save the email then attach it or just drag it from the message list to the
email to which you want to attach it.

Re: The Bat process continues to run after app is closed, sometimes

2013-12-31 Thread Rick
A My pc's shutdown process generated an End Program pop up notice
A headlined, End Program - thebat that stated This program is not
A responding. My choices are to either end now or cancel.

A The Bat was closed so I looked at the processes running under Task
A Manager and saw that thebat.exe was running. IIRC, it was 284k. So,
A I reopened and closed The Bat, and the same thing happened. Now, I
A can just end the process, but why is a process running in the
A background when The Bat is closed? Perhaps this is somehow related
A to the stream write error message problem that has never been
A resolved? (See my earlier post from Dec 2)

A Bottom line question, though, is, why would a process be running for
A The Bat after having closed the application? Note, this does not
A always happen.

I can confirm that although it has been better in the more recent
versions of v6

Re: Problems moving mail to Windows 8.1

2013-12-30 Thread Rick
I had trouble too (and this will happen every so often) Run it as administrator
- either right click the icon on the desktop or the RT screen and you will be
presented with that option. Once it runs that way you can run it normally after
that ... until the next time. You can even do this from the program icon if you
wish. If that doesn't work, check the permissions on the l folder and all it's
sub containers and even if administrators have full access, add yourself
specifically with full access

I'll give it another shot then .. Thanks again!
If you are on XP it will have to drag to the quick launch section on the far

2) Is there a separate download for the 64bit version of TB? I saw Maxim's
email on 64bit version on TBBeta, hence question.

Install the MSI files then copy the 64 bit exe to the program folder. 6.0.12
has a lot of problems but I have not found any real show stoppers other than
the AVs

Re: Roguemoticons/Smileys

2013-11-21 Thread Rick
M Did you ever follow up on updating your Rogues photo, which you M
mentioned in May last year? I had another Someone new has joined or M
updated their image on Roguemoticons email today (which makes five in M 18
months) saying you had joined or updated, but the zip file still M contains
the same photo of you.

I think Roguemoticons are dead for all practical purposes. I wouldn't blame
Ritlabs if they removed it - no sense in releasing a program with a program
feature that CANNOT be fixed. They could easily take pictures out of the
address book and put them in the same place (which it does but I am getting
black spaces in v6)

OK, thanks for that info - I should look into doing some tweaking, too, then.

there is a lot of other great stuff. i.e pin odd stuff to the win 8 start menu,
add to the ALT X menu
