Some Newbie Questions...

2003-07-05 Thread choppystride
Hi all,

1) In my haste to start using using TB, I set up a lot (over 2 dozen) of
email accounts and just accepted the default templates (New, Reply,
Forward, etc.) for each account. Now, after about 2 weeks of using
TB, I would like to change them all but it seems that I need to
change them one account at a time. Is there a faster way to do this?
i.e. is there a centralized way to change the default templates so
that the changes will also apply to all existing accounts?

2) I like to view my message list such that the newer ones are at
the top. However, after I've read a message and delete it, TB always
like to automatically highlight the next one below (i.e. an older one
which I've already read and decided to keep). Can I configure TB so
that it can automatically move to the next message above?

3) I had this problem where my ISP only allows 4 simultaneous connection
to the mail server at one time and causes TB to hang when I check my 2
dozen accounts all at once. I wrote a quick and dirty script to
overcome this. Is there a easy way for me to configure TB to call an
external program (i.e. as a menu item, a button, a shortcut, etc.) so
that it can run my script?

Hello Leif,

Thanks for the suggestion, perhaps I'll give that a try.

LG serious reason for having to have 24 separate mailboxes, aliasing is
LG the way to go.

My reluctance to use aliases is that sometimes when I'm on the road
and don't have access to TB, I need to rely on the web based mail
frontend provided by my email host. However, the web mail they
provide does not allow me to change the FROM field of the email
header. Therefore, if I need to send emails via the webmail, I
would reveal the true target email account which I would
like to hide.

Also, in my original description of the problem, I forgot to mention
another strange behavior. I mentioned that the accounts that were
unsuccessfully checked would get stuck and hang the Conn Centre,
which I would then need to terminate by pressing the abort button. I find
that, from this point on, TB would not perform any subsequent account
checking for these unsuccessful accounts, even on an individual basis.
For instance, for each of these accounts, I would press F2 and nothing
would occur (i.e. I don't see the Conn Center coming up with messages
saying that it's connecting and checking, etc). However, for the
successful ones, subsequent checking would go on as normal. The only
way to rectify this is to close TB and restart it again.

I've been browsing thru the archives and have seen a lot of Hanging
on Retrieval type of problems. I wonder if this is a well-known bug
that Ritlabs is working on?

Problem connecting to multiple email accounts on the same server

2003-06-20 Thread choppystride
Hello,

My email provider provides an unlimted number of email boxes. I
currently need to setup 24 for myself. I am having trouble retrieving
mail from all my accounts at once (i.e. by using the Tools - Check
Mail for All command). The problem seems to be caused by the fact
that my email provider only allows 4 simultaneous connection to their
email server from the same IP. I've tested this out by using the
/CHECK command in scripts and can produce this problem consistently
when I check more than 4 accounts at a time. What happens during
these tests are that, the first 4 accounts will connect and retrieve
all mails successfully. However, subsequent accounts would seem to
get stuck, causing the Connection Center to hang indefinitely. I
would then need to terminate the Connection Center by pressing the
abort button. Note that this error occurs whether I am connecting to
an IMAP or a POP3 server. I've also tried using multiple /CHECK
commands in my script by specifying 4 accounts at a time but it did not
make any difference. Currently, the only thing I can do is check each
account separately via mouseclicks or the F2 hotkey. Needless to say,
this is very inconvenient considering the number of accounts that I
have.

Interestingly, I've tried this with the Pegasus email client (v4.11)
and had no problems. Not sure why this is the case. Perhaps it
connects to and then disconnects from the server each time an account
is checked?

Any suggestions to overcome this problem will be greatly appreciated.

BTW, my email providing uses qmail on Linux.

Are you saying that Ritlabs is aware of this problem and that a
solution is near completion? I was browsing thru their bugtrap and
saw a bug titled Mail fetching (POP3) hangs dated Jan 22. I wonder
if this is the same one that I'm experiencing. Perhaps I should
report mine?

DR example, have an option so that the check messages is done
DR sequentially. This is probably a scenario that either wasn't thought
DR of at design time and/or nobody reported before.

As I've said before, I've tried Pegasus which doesn't have this bug
b/c it seems to be checking the accounts sequentially. However, it
also seems to be very slow, much slower than TB when I tested them out
by having them check only 4 accounts (the limit imposed by my email
provider). So perhaps we should be allowed to specify how many
accounts to check at a time to minimize the possible performance loss.
But then of course my tests were not exactly precise scientific
experiments. And also, I'm assuming here that this 4-at-a-time
limit is the source of the problem, which may or may not be.

Hello,

DR example, have an option so that the check messages is done
DR sequentially. This is probably a scenario that either wasn't thought
DR of at design time and/or nobody reported before.

I think there might be a temporary solution but I need some help from
the Windows programming experts out there, particulary the scripting
gurus, to figure out how to do it.

I notice that whenever TB checks email, the Connection Center
starts, which you can see as a task under the Application tab in the
Windows Task Manager. After TB finishes checking, the Conn Center
task terminates automatically. If we can figure out when the Conn
Center task finishes, we can do the following inside a script or
batch file:

..\TheBat.EXE /CHECKMail Acc #1

wait for the Conn Center task finishes

..\TheBat.EXE /CHECKMail Acc#2

wait for the Conn Center task finishes

..\TheBat.EXE /CHECKMail Acc#3

wait for the Conn Center task finishes

and so on...

Nice additional features would be:
1) Determine all the accounts programatically (i.e. perhaps from all
the folder names under: C:\Program Files\The Bat!\MAIL).
2) Have an option to specify how many accoutns to check each time.

Does anyone know how to do this?
