Yes. I can confirm this.

Well, while I can conmfirm this, too, this seems to be alright. It may
very well be that this annoys you but AFAIK it is sufficent to only have
the email address in the from header. I could do this with the bat, too.
I don't really know if that is by choice of the user or just the default
setup of the aol mailer or if the mailer doesn't support the additional
name..

I'm sorry but I'm afraid I can't help you with any URLs..

That's true, but I'm trying to generate automatically a compilation of
replies by name (and not by email address). Toward that end, I can use
a template to capture the reply's original-from name, but the name has
to be there to begin with. What I'm trying to find out is whether an
AOL user can opt to include his name, and, if so, how he can do it.

I could do this with the bat, too. I don't really know if that is by

Well, you can collect them in your address book. That should be easy,
since need to send them mail too. Now you can use the macro
%AbFromName instead of the %OFromName, because the %AbFromName macro
pulls the name from the address book. (provided that you've entered
it)

Thank you Roelof. I'll try that on this weeks mailing.

Dear Daniel,

On 15:25 21.02.2003, you [Daniel Grunberg ([EMAIL PROTECTED])]
wrote...

Does anyone know if the problem is with AOL, or with the AOL users?

These problems arise because AOL internally uses a non-Internet mail
system. Messages send from AOL to AOL never have headers or so.
Messages from AOL to the Internet get passed to a gateway, that feeds
in necessary headers for the message being transported on internet
MTAs.

Can someone give me a URL for AOL's e-mail setup instructions, or
possibly send me a copy of AOL's e-mail setup document?

Sorry, I fear you won't be able to change AOLs internet mail gateways
;)

Cheers,
 Johannesmailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

AOL From: and Date: anomalies.

2003-02-21 Thread Daniel Grunberg
Our chamber music society has a lot of AOL users. I've noticed that
e-mails from (all?) the AOL users who e-mail me seem to have the
following in common:

  1. Our AOL using memberts' messages are time tagged with the
abbreviation for their time zone, rather than with their time zone's
offset from UTC (which I thought was the standard way of doing
  things). For example:

  Date: Thu, 20 Feb 2003 20:09:13 EST
   rather than the hoped for
  Date: Thu, 20 Feb 2003 20:09:13 -0500 or
  Date: Thu, 20 Feb 2003 20:09:13 -0500 (EST)

  2. My AOL-using correspondents' messages do not have their names on
the From: line, e.g. John Doe [EMAIL PROTECTED], but seem instead to
have only [EMAIL PROTECTED] on the From: line.

These AOL anomalies cause hiccups in the automatic processing of
replies to our meeting reminder e-mail. My first thought is to try to
educate the AOL using members.

Does anyone know if the problem is with AOL, or with the AOL users?

Can someone give me a URL for AOL's e-mail setup instructions, or
possibly send me a copy of AOL's e-mail setup document?
