I can't confirm this behavior here. Tabs work as expected.
Same over here on Win2k/Sp2. No problem with the tabs in the search.
But then one question arises
You should be able to use the SPACE bar.

Also, why does BAT ask me if I REALLY want to send a mail when I hit
send?

Account/Properties/Options, uncheck confirm immediate sending.
