Editor: How to delete selected areas of text ?

Hi there, I'm afraid this might be a stupid question: When I select words with my mouse and press the backspace-button - nothing happens... but I wanted those selected words to be deleted !! Why does TB behave differently to other editors ? Is there any way to switch this to 'normal' ?
