That was it! I deleted the QTN files as well as the QTB files and they
stay gone. So it was the QTN files that kept making the QTN files

Normally what will help, assuming the programmers don't put stuff like
that in the registry, do a search for *.* in the bat program file
directory.
Or essentially whatever program has files 'missing'
Do note that some programs have 2 places where they put files, in
Documents in settings there is another directory being used...

I tried doing the same now that I am aware of the common templates
location - copied my main account.qtb file to the mail directory and
found most of my QTs duplicated there. Then I re-created one that was
not on the same account in the common location and deleted them all
from their previous locations. All good but I notice the account.qtb
files are still present in the account folders, even though there are
no longer any QTs there. I find that if I delete those account.qtb
files, the next time I start TB!, they re-appear and the QTs re-appear
in their old location (as well as in the common location).

Obviously, a workaround is to leave the redundant account.qtb files
where they are but can anybody confirm or explain this behaviour?

Only because The Bat! already has a place for Common Templates that
was introduced after I had the templates created in a particular
 account.

You may try something, don't know if it works because I haven't tried
it.

Make a copy of your ACCOUNT.QTB file in Mail directory (this is the
Common QTs) somewhere for safety. Same for the QTB file in the account
you mention. Then *move* account's QTB to your Mail directory and start
TB and see if it worked. If not, restore QTB files where they were.
