I have major slow downs as well and have not found the issue yet (checking the
suggestions now).

AVG is free and has a pay version and seems to plug into The Bat nicely

AE to work so well with it.

You should try to disable proxy in KAV and use the AVP plug-in
supplied in TB!. However, the latest version of AVP comes with a broken
version of plug-in, you may need to search archives for an updated
version of KLAV plug-in - the problem has been discussed here some
times AFAIR...
