You could do what I do. I only have three modes

1. Lists (Like tbudl)
2. Discussions (non lists but threaded)
3. Normal (my inbox)

I do on occasion sort a folder a different way, but it's usually
because I'm click happy and mistakenly clicked on the header bar.

I just click on the header bar to sort back the way it was.
