Yes, Windows 7 and Windows 8 are not actual version numbers, they
are product names, just like Windows 95 and Windows XP.

Click on that arrow, choose Customize and find The Bat! entry. It

Problems on Windows 7

2011-08-17 Thread Jack
Hi,

I recently moved my installation from an XP to a Windows 7 computer. There were
a lot of problems relating to disk (paths not found). TB support said to rename
the registry section for TB and that seems to have taken care of most of the
problems I was having. But it removed all of my settings and I can't seem to
get them back to where they were. I'm wondering if it is due to being on
Windows 7 or if there is a setting mistake. I have two main problems right now:

- When I reply to some emails, the persons text is in a block with a
solid bar down the side. I vaguely remember having this problem when I upgraded
to V3, I think, and it was due to how the editor was setup. But I set that to
plain text and for some emails the text is quoted as separate lines.

- In XP, the icon for TB was in the system tray. Windows 7 doesn't see to have
a way to place it there and places it in the task bar. Sometimes, and I can't

Probably an obvious point, but in TB! at

have you selected GNU Privacy Guard (GPG)?

Oh, and what are you doing when you get this PGP error (signing,

Re: TB! and Windows 7 UAC

2009-12-31 Thread Raymund Tump
Hi Cesar,

Thanks for your message. That's the problem. I give my permission
 every time TB! starts.

Try the following: Find The Bat! in the Program Files directory, right
click it and go to the compatibility tab. Check Run as Administrator.

However, if I lower the warnings level from UAC (no warning, lowest
 level), nothing bothers me anymore.

Well, to run the computer with an administrative account and turning
off UAC is a very, very bad idea. That would open the door for more
malwares like the one you got from that iPhone website :-)

I should probably do that because as I read before from friends at
TBUDL, UAC wouldn't help so much with security issues.

Well, security wise it is always a good idea to run with the least
possible privileges. So create a restricted user and if you need to
install something make sure you scan it first for virus and malware
and then install it using the administrative account that was created
during the setup of the computer.

Thanks for your message. Your suggestion, even running TB as
Administrator, the program prompts asking for permission to access the
HD and to commit changes on it. I tried different levels from UAC
vertical cursor. It only works without restriction if used with no UAC
restrictions (UAC cursor down).

According to Danger and an article I read about UAC it really doesn't
provide enough security as I was thinking before. Anyway Kaspersky had
picked up the Trojan and eliminated it. I think that whenever I try
again searching for information from Google I should do it using Linux
that, somehow, looks to have better means of protection.

Both! Security Issues are taken very seriously and patched as soon as

I don't think so. The license for Voyager is included in The Bat! Pro.
I think the reasons for using the registry are historical. The
programmers obviously spend a lot of energy on improving TB!'s IMAP
support, which for quite some users is very important. (I still use
POP, but I'm not representative. ;) ) I can understand that they don't
want to meddle with long established, well working parts, that only

hardly anything in the registry. TB! puts a lot more in the registry
but still puts some stuff in .INI files. My mail folder contains
ADDRBOOK.INI, avconfig.ini, COLORS.INI, PGP.INI, PRINT.INI,
SmartBat.INI, SMIME.INI, and TBPlugin.INI, as well as settings in
files with other extensions, such as AddrDontTrack.TXT and urlmgr.xml.
And a protocol.ini file in each account folder. So RIT would seem to
have no ideological objection to storing the settings in files.

Personally, I think the registry entries should be limited to the
minimum possible - things like file associations and identifying as
the default email application, not things like window sizes and
positions. (-:

They do not encourage .ini files any more.

But lots of software ignores that. And in typically hypocritical
fashion, they use them themselves. Desktop.ini. ntuser.ini.
Boot.ini...

however there is a good side to that as well because
you can back up your registry and hive.

Good and bad. The registry gets bloated and slow. I would prefer the
choice.

Cesar: Which level of UAC do you use? I use W7 and UAC default and I'm never

Why would you not lower the level of the UAC? Most think it is useless

I'm using the maximum level of UAC in Windows 7. So I installed the

When entering a site with information about iPhone and VPN, the

and removed.

I thought that raising the level of UAC I could have avoided this kind
of attack. Whereas the last version of TB! reports to be compatible

authorization.

I noticed this detail when authorization was in the early 30-day free

license registration.

I am using GnuPG. I didn't install the international package of

Windows 7 The Bat and Gmail

I have started using GMail so as to get my mail onto my iphone easily.
I love the labels approach rather than having copies in folders. I also

This plays havoc with TBs unread counts as IMAP from google shows

Nope. TB!'s IMAP support is broken beyond repair (and is unlikely to
ever get fixed), and Gmail's IMAP implementation is sometimes quirky,
too. However, Gmail is extremely popular and you'll see support for
it getting better in major email clients (i.e. Thunderbird).

If I had to this I would make sure of a few things.
Make and test out the backup so that you know before all your data is
moved that the bat works... no idea how much data is involved but I
know from personal experience that if you have to download as in my
case again from google it takes a long time...
Also I still have 50% still missing which was in voyager backup.
Keep also in mind that if you go for latest OS the Voyager may need an
update as well to make sure it can handle the latest files...

Reminds me, google and the bat donot do a proper job on downloading

You're wrong with SmartBat has to be reopened. If you don't maximize
the TB! window and drag SmartBat's window so that it is visible all
the time, you see it vanishing when the focus leaves the bat and

Fellow list members,

Well, I'm pretty sure I searched the archives

and didn't find anything useful regarding how TB! is going to work
w/Windows 7, or even *IF* it's going to work.

Both my wife and I are running TB! v3.99.3, she using Vista Home
Premium and me using XP Pro. She took advantage of the pre-purchase
offer a few months ago and we have received notice from MS that the
package has been shipped. Based on what I've read about W7 since then,
I'm starting to get worried about what is and is not going to run.

Can anybody assuage my concerns?

Hello Jack, hello all,

Ritlabs says on its website it is Windows 7 ready.

And TB! works on Windows 7.

However, there were some crashes.

Moreover, I suspect TB! of causing a bug where touchpad (Synaptic)
stops responding on clicks - this does not happen if you avoid using
minimize to system tray.

Hope it helps.

Which brings up a question. If by message store format you mean the
actual format in which the messages were stored, fine. I can
understand older versions not being able to understand the newer
format. However, with earlier versions messages were stored on the
disk in the MAIL folder buried in

C:\Program Files\The Bat!\MAIL\Jack S. LaRosa\inbox

The above location contains a file called MESSAGES.TBB which I believe
are the actual messages. There's also a file called MESSAGES.TBI whose
function is a mystery to me. After the change in the message store
format was instituted with 4.1, where are messages stored now?

TIA

messages are still stored in MESSAGES.TBB, since 4.1 message index file
MESSAGES.TBI is converted to MESSAGES.TBN to introduce new features and
enable larger msgbases than 2GB.

The message store has not been placed in Program Files by default for
several versions now (since only administrative users have permission
to write there, and in Vista and newer, even when logged in with
administrative privileges, the programs run with normal user
privileges by default).

TBB files contain the messages, and TBI are the indexes. With 4.1, TBI
files are replaced with TBN (one of the reasons for the change was to
allow for message bases exceeding 2GB, but IIRC, there were a few
other changes).
