I love the bat and use it all the time (particularly for
mailing lists)
However my Kids need something more intuitive and simple
with the ability to write HTML messages (I Know,I Know... but
at six and nine years pretty pictures & coloured text
matter).
So they (& the wife) use Poco, but it won't auto delete old messages or
auto compress folders like TB! (two v important features
IMHO) and whatever they say on the
Poco forum scripts are not as flexible as TB!'s macros +
filters.
Since reading this thread I spent a week downloading and
trying every single windows client I could find but none
combined the power of The Bat with HTML or RTF writing (My
favourites were Mahogany but I couldn't figure out even
viewing html with it and Foxmail 4.1 which was a very
strange Chinese hybrid but I was not sure how safe it was as
it views any HTML with IE components.
I personally always send plain text but Girls just wanna have
fun so I guess I'll have to stick with two clients.
The Bat for me , Poco for the family.
If the Bat had a more simple (pretty !!!) Interface and at
least RTF editing (I don't need any replys on the reasons
why not I understand and agree that plain text is best) I
could uninstall poco and just have one Family Frendly -mail

I'm sure you won't regret having paid for TB! :)

Anyway, one of these days I will start suggesting enhancements to TB!
developers. Some of the ones I have in mind are:
  - View Tabs for folder tree
  - Ignoring messages and threads
  - Manual re-threading
  - Possibility of assigning messages to more than 1 colour group
  - and a few more...

I hope you will second me when I do :)

I do use the free version of MailTraq and it works a treat. Perhaps
not easy to grasp and configure at first, but it's worth the effort.

MailTraq is a quite complete package but I basically just use the News
to Mail and Mail to News gateways, so that I can manage newsgroups as
if they were normal mail lists like this one. The basic idea is that
MailTraq collects my favourite newsgroups from different servers and
converts them to e-mail that is forwarded to one of my accounts. When
I collect this account it is like if news messages where coming from
mail lists, I filter them to different folders and voila! When I want
to post or reply I write a message to the "newsgroup e-mail address"
that MailTraq has set up for each newsgroup, and that I have
configured in the templates for each newsgroup folder. When MailTraq
receives my messages, it converts them appropriately and sends them to
the corresponding news server.

If the list moderator(s) don't consider this OT, I will start a new
thread with subject "Newsgroups with The Bat! and MailTraq", or
something similar, to give more detailed hints on setting up the whole
thing. And, if considered OT, I will send you the details privately.

Until I have time to start this new thread (hopefully later today),
if you haven't seen it already, you may want to take a look at:

You have to make the decision which best fits your needs. In my case I
will probably go from 1 program to 3. I can't wait for VA to go open
source any longer. Without development VA can NOT meet my needs looking
forward. So I am putting the effort into learning additional interfaces
and moving on.

Well, since you ask:

1. Virtual Access is still undoubtedly the best all round mail & news
(& CIS) client I've ever used. Sadly no-longer developed although
still fully functional.

2. The Bat! comes a not so close second. (Hi Miguel - Still not
convinced!) Let down by the dreadful interface and even worse
documentation. Looking foward to v.2

3. Forté Agent. Nice filters as far as I remember.

4. Eudora for Mac. Well at least it works.

5. Poco and Pegasus perhaps?

I have tried almost any MUA out there (OK, I skipped IncrediMail! ;-), I
still have some to test (Gnus, ...) and this is my personal top five *at
the moment*:

1) The Bat! 1.6c:
Does more than most people would ever need in a MUA.

2) Sylpheed
IMO the best graphical mailer for Unix-based systems (no, I don't
consider mutt or pine to have graphical interfaces).

3) Mozilla
Promising. It seems it could become my recommendation for a free
 MUA (on Windows) one day.

4) mutt
I use it at my university. Nice to have for checking mail via SSH.
Nice list of features, highly configurable (although I must admit
that I only use a very small subset of its features).

5) Outlook
Good PIM solution. Evolution 1.03 comes close, but Outlook
nevertheless is a good piece of software. Unfortunately,
it is a popular target for virii because it is really widespread.

Sometimes, in my weaker moments, I wish there was a version of Sylpheed
for Windows (I know there is one, but I don't really like it).
Especially over the last few weeks, when a lot of new functions have
been added to TB while old bugs were still present.

1. The Bat! 1.60c

fast, stable and does everything I want without the virus/worm
hassles. Love the templates idea. Somewhat irritating at times,
esp. in terms of menu layout and less that attractive appearance.

2. Mail for Mac OSX

Looks stunning, very fast and rock solid stability. Does
everything I ever want to do via a Mac laptop on the road; but
still wouldn't use it for main e-mail functions.

3. Outlook 2000

Liked its ease of use and ability to work with everything I
needed it to work with. Got sick of virus threats.

4. Becky

Looks nice enough and does more than the basics well. Could use
it if TB! didn't exist.

5. Eudora 5.1

Like the easy and logical menu and config. system. Nice enough to
look at. The adverts are irritating and it was unstable for me
over a long period while trying to find a valid alternative. My
wife still uses it and finds it hassle free.

Just MHO and am open to alternatives, as always.

Hello Drew,

I've tried just about every Windows email client I can find (except
Turnpike), and The Bat! is without *any* doubt, the best of them all.

My "top five" list has only two entries:

1) The Bat! (absolutely the best!)
2) Becky! (*very* good, but still a relatively distant second to TB!)

I do own both, and while Becky has some very nice features, it's no
TB! Becky, for me, is sort of a backup for both email and news (it has
a basic news plug-in). Sometimes, I'll send an email from Becky just
for the fun of it, or I'll use it to check against TB! if I'm trying
to figure out what's happening with a certain message, but it's
definitely "second best" in my opinion.

TB! has a wonderful and useful feature set (better than any I've
seen), and it's stable and fast.

Outlook Express does not filter Outgoing mail and is vulnerable to
virus attacks
Eudora was unable to import my message base from Outlook Express
without crashing
Pegasus had a very cumbersom way of dealing with multiple accounts.

Hi tracer,

yes, I believe that is embarrassing. But I don't believe that The Bat!
is to blame. Question: why did you import your sent messages to the
outbox and not to their respective folders? Besides, TB! won't send
anything automatically unless you tell it to do so in your options...

I even let TB! ask my confirmation for immediate sending, so if I
inadvertently hit the "send" button instead of "put in outbox" or "save
as draft", no unwanted sending will occur.
