Re: Upgrade to new version
Hello Tom, First, buy the version 8 registration key and enter it for your version 7 registration. Version 8 keys are backwards-compatible for version 7 as well. Make sure that The Bat! 7 displays your version 8 key, it should tell in the about box that the registration key is valid until version 8.9. Then, download and install the version 8 .MSI file. Don't uninstall anything. Version 8 will update all the program files and will keep using your data files. If you like to pin The Bat! to the Windows Taskbar, the icon will no longer be valid. To make it survive installations of the new versions, do the following, once. After you have installed version 8, we would recommend you to manually create a shortcut on the desktop to point to C:\Program Files\The Bat!\thebat64(or 32).exe, and then drag this shortcut to the taskbar. -- Best regards, Maxim Masiutin Director Ritlabs, SRL www.ritlabs.com Current version is 7.1 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Hi All, Every time I open TB, a "New version available" dialog box appears. This includes a checkbox to check for new versions. However, even when I've clear this before either going to the download page or clicking Cancel in the dialog box, this dialog box still appears each time I open TB! New version 4.0.24
Does anyone know whether the earlier bug in 4.0.11, 4.0.14 and 4.0.18 has been fixed in this new version? The bug in Windows XP meant that when you right-click on a file in windows explorer to send to The Bat, it opened The Bat but did not open a new email with the attachment in it. Then when you tried to quit, it would not do so; you had to use Task Manager to close it. In February I put in a bug report, and got the reply that this was a known bug and was being fixed. So went back to 3.99.25. Tried 4.0.18 but it had the same problem, so carefully uninstalled 4.0.18 and went back to 3.99.25. Today tried to contact the Support site to confirm whether the bug is now fixed, but the Support site seems to have gone. Its not so difficult. If you can copy files and install/uninstall program, you're almost there. I didn't describe how to back up the registry settings, but thats not difficult, either. Click Start, Run and type "regedit". The registry editor will open. On the left, navigate to the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" branch and open it. Locate "Software" and open it. Locate "Rit" and right-click it. A popup menu will open, select "Export", a file requester will open, enter some name, click on "Save" and you have successfully backed up TB's registry settings. > However, I'm starting to lose confidence in the stability of The Bat. Some local setting at your end got corrupted somehow, and the developers of the program where not aware of this corruption to happen. So, they didn't know that they have to catch it. Out of thousands of users, you've been one of the few unlucky ones with problems. The best thing you can do now is track down the problem and help the developers. > But I don't like the way these troubles keep popping up. Re: New version of The Bat won't load!
Two Bat fiascos out of two Bat "upgrades" must be some kind of record, too. Unfortunately, I'm basically forced to post this way because I'm posting from a LOUSY, web-based e-mail client that my provider supplies. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to post/read at all. Hopefully you'll bear with me until I can get back to using TB. And, no, I don't expect "upgrades" to mess things up *this* badly, where I'm basically dead in the water, and backups won't even help me. It's never happened to me before. Ever. And *of course* it was a nice step-by-step set of instructions (and my thanks go out to Alexander for at least trying to help me), provided you're used to doing that kind of stuff. But I'm not. No, he didn't explain how to backup the registry key, so it was a good opportunity for you to do so, or so I would have thought. And the mods can either learn to be more flexible when someone basically has no other choice, or I suppose they could ban me. Because I can't do anything about it right now. Maybe if they spent more time helping me than they're spending slapping me with assorted fish, I'd be up and running by now and able to fully comply with the list's rules. I'm not a scoflaw by nature. No, I'm not in a very good mood right now. And if you think that you're "annoyed"... Marek, okay. Tonight I'll find the "account.srb" file, back it up, remove it, and then try to load TB again. I assume "if it helps, send it to me" means that I should send you a copy of the account.srb file, if this works? Thanks again for your help, Marek. New version won't load...
Yesterday, I downloaded the new version and installed it. Unfortunately, it won't load...it freezes at the opening splash screen, and I get a Microsoft error message asking for permission to send it along to Microsoft, etc. I reinstalled it several times, same result. I rebooted several times, same result. I'd like not to lose the few addititions to The Bat files since my last back-up, so does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this problem? I'm making this post from my office, on another computer, using a webmail interface. If I eventually have to totally uninstall the program to get around this, will I be able to get up and running again with an old backup (after downloading a 3.5 version, instead of 3.5.1, and starting over)? Will the new installation still be able to find my old registration key? Help! -- Jack Current version is 3.51.10 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Using Smiley Images [was Re: New version threading]
Hello Steve! On Saturday, May 14, 2005, 1:14 PM, you wrote, in part: > Smileys work from text handles that call images. You cannot view them in the Edit Mail Message window. To view them in View Message windows of any kind (including VFs and Browse Mail Ticker), you have to select RTV. A handy right-click context menu for the message body will let you switch from PTV to RTV. In that same menu, tick the box for Smileys. (There's a place in the Main Window Options/Preferences/Viewer-Editor to choose HTML/Rich Text View, plus a check box for Smileys, also.) You have a set of Default Smileys plus their .msl handles in The Bat!/Images folder. To put one of those in, just type the handle (or c&p it into your message body text.) Be sure to include the enclosing colons ( : : ) with no space between handle and colons. Important: be sure to have a space on either "outside" of the colons. To use the additional images (not all of them Smileys, though we have them on the Smiley page--we have a large collection of flags, too), download them from: http://www.PCWize.com/thebat/PCWSmileys.php Put the pcwimages folder in The Bat!/Images. Also, put the pcwsmileys.msl file in The Bat!/Images. The Default folder there is your collection of images that came with TB!, and default.msl, which you can open in a text reader such as Notepad is your collection of handles for those. So, after you get the PCWize Smiley page Smileys, you'll have 2 folders and 2 .msl files in The Bat!/Images. Forgive me if I'm redundant. A look in the Images folder alone would have been enough for you to figure this out, I'm sure. If I haven't told this clearly, please ask. I guess I really should work up a QT with a mini-tutorial for answering questions about using Smileys. :) I'm tickled to tell you how to play with these, as I am the Official Keeper of the Smileys! :) Hope it's okay to brag--actually I'm just Leif Gregory's helper with this. 9Val had the original Smileys-called-from-text-handles idea, and then Leif (I think with some more input from 9Val), expanded on it. Some of us on TBOT were privileged to help beta-test the page, and then Leif asked if I would help him out as the page's administrator. Die-hard PTV users don't have much use for the concept. Others, like me, have had an immense amount of fun with them. :) -- Best regards, Mary, PCWSmileys Administrator http://www.PCWize.com/thebat/PCWSmileys.php The Bat! 3.5 on Windows XP 5.1 2600 Service Pack 2 Current version is 3.5 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
