If you have a backup from before you did the upgrade, I suggest you reinstall
the old version and restore the backup, then upgrade through all intermediate
major versions:
 (don't forget
to run TB once after each upgrade, maybe also check a template or two)

The web-based Help file is it. I like that it is context-sensitive; whereever
you hit F1 while working in TB, the relevant chapter will be opened. I use it
sometimes and it works for my needs. YMMV.

That looks like UTF-7 encoding (+ACU- is %, +ACI is "). No idea why the
templates were corrupted like that, maybe the format changed at some point, and
the conversion code didn't trigger properly.

Title: Re: [T/N: 7232C0F3]: Upgrading The Bat!

G'day Richard,

Apologies for the way this comes through, but while the upgrade has gone through without a hitch as far as my message base and filters are concerned, my message templates have become horribly screwed up, hence the poor format of this message.

To give you an idea of what is going on, here is what my reply template ends up being when I somply press the reply button.

G'day +ACU-CapitalFirst+AD0AJQ-OFromFName,

+ACU-QInclude+AD0AIg-Reply+AF8-Ref+ACI

+ACU-NOReadConfirm+ACU-Cursor+ACU-Quotes

+ACU-QInclude+AD0AIg-Signature+AF8-TB+ACI

+ACU-QInclude+AD0AIg-The+AF8-Bat+AF8-Beta+AF8-Discussion+AF8-Signature+ACI
+ACU-QInclude+AD0AIg-TB+AF8-Headers+ACI
+ACU-SetEditor+AD0-1
+ACU-QInclude+AD0AIg-Default+AF8-Delay+ACI-

Now, those up with everything will know whats going however I have not the foggiest idea as to what the +ACU- and +ACI means and why it is there.

You can see what it was supposed to show from my previous message in this thread.

Basically I have used separate quick templates that can be used across multiple folders and groups and then they get called up as %QT in a particular group etc. This way, if I need to change something, I only have to do it once and it ends up automatically across all the groups that use it.

Anyone have any idea as to why this change has happened?

Thanks.

I am going to enter a sigdash even though I have no signature as I am mot a big fish eater. Well, you know what I mean :D

Hopefully it comes down this time as the other thing is that it lost the from setting and used my default.

One other thing is I have lost the message list tabs and am having to ferret around to find out how to get them back.

I was trying to get rid of all the unnecessary windows like the quick reply window and the one at the root of an account. Much better to access them from menus and toolbars. That will learn me.

Here goes.

In addition to the TB internal backup of your message database and settings, I
would do a full backup of TB program files and data files. I would then
uninstall TB and the message database so you can install 9.3.4 fresh without
any possible corruptions that may have happened in between. Once your new 9.3.4
is installed you should be able to use TB's restore to restore your message
database, address book and settings.

This should avoid any quirky differences that may exist between 4.2 and 9.3.4.
The full backup of TB program  and dataa  files will allow you to return to
your pre-9.3.4 state just in case things do not go as smoothly as we both think
they should.

Hello Jernej,

> OK, my problem is that the block is the first thing in the list, so it
> doesn't have a related operator.

I wonder how did you manage to put it on the top :)

Then, you still can just edit it manually as text if it's too difficult to
recreate it - copy filter in the Sorting Office and paste it into a text
editor, you will see text like this:

 TB! Message Filter
beginFilter
UID: [D5E1442A.01D6CCA1.6BAEB230.47D2BEF4]
Name: New\20filter
Filter: {\0D\0A\20`24`0`0`20201210T22Z\0D\0A{0\0D\0A}\0D\0A}
IsActive
IsHotkey
IsHotkeyOnly
Ignore
endFilter

In the "Filter" line, the "{0\0D\0A}" (the second character may vary from 0 to
3) sequence stands for that empty block you want to delete. Just delete it,
copy the text and paste it into Sorting Office as a new filter.

When you enter %APPDATA% into Windows Explorer (with both %), then you are in
the right folder where TheBat stores its configuration and data:
C:\Users\_CurrentLoggedInUser_\AppData\Roaming

In the folder "TheBat" you will see all the files and maildata of the user.

%APPDATA% is a place, where each program can store its own user data.

If you want same version, but independent installations, install The Bat!

trial of?) the current version of The Bat! or with another client like
Thunderbird. It should work using that address.

The Bat! v8.5 is the first version that supports TLS 1.2. (Changelog:
https://www.ritlabs.com/en/products/thebat/revision-history/7136/)

The first version of The Bat! to support SNI was v8.4. (Changelog:
https://www.ritlabs.com/en/products/thebat/revision-history/7121/)

TLS jargon and technical details below.

> TLS handshake failure. The server host name (".***.***.**") does
> not match the certificate.

In the DNS system, mail.wai.com.au is a CNAME for wai.com.au. wai.com.au has
an A record (A for address) for the IP address 103.9.171.57.
c4s4-4e-syd.hosting-services.net.au also has an A record for the IP address
103.9.171.57.

When I establish a TLS connection to the server at 103.9.171.57 and use the
TLS Server Name Indication (SNI) extension to tell it which host name I am
trying to connect to, I get back a certificate that is valid for
mail.wai.com.au, among other domains. (The full certificate I get is below.)
Notice that mail.wai.com.au is one of the Subject Alternative Names.

The SNI extension must be used: otherwise the server returns a generic
certificate for c4s4-4e-syd.hosting-services.net.au which does not match
mail.wai.com.au.

I used the openssl tool to connect to this server and extract it's
public certificate:

openssl s_client -connect 'mail.wai.com.au:995' -showcerts -verify_hostname
mail.wai.com.au -servername mail.wai.com.au

The decoded certificate it returns is below.

Thanks Christopher, but it's usually the 'a' that needs to be superscripted
from what I understand. For instance, you can see (even in the old records) Ma
where the 'a' is superscripted. This is an abbreviation of the name, Maria. In
the case of Profa, the abbreviation would be to indicate that the PhD graduate
is a female. This is found in salutations of more formal correspondence, again
as I understand it. Learning is happening.

Pointing out the degree symbol is also handy for different reasons. Thanks
again.

If all you need are the ordinal indicators º and ª, these exist as dedicated
Unicode characters: no HTML needed. I copied/pasted these from the Wikipedia
article on the orginal indicator [1].

There's nothing for longer sequences like "st" or "ora" in Unicode, so if
you want to stick to plain text, you'll need to use something else. In
English, one sees things like 1st or 1^st or 1^{st}.

AFAIK this type of problem with the drop down list has been an issue
for a long time. Anyway, try what I did a long time ago to "solve" the
issue.:

- Create a New group.
- DO NOT set to "Add items to the instant address popup"

That type of error (access violation) are usually due to a software
bug, and usually difficult to investigate.

I suggest that you open a bug report at https://bt.ritlabs.com.
Obviously, specify which version of TB you are using. If it is not

Try Workspace / Windows Split Mode in the main menu. It gives you several

Thank you, both, for your suggestions. Before following any of that, I tried a
"tried and true" solution: I closed down The Bat and reopened it. That worked
like magic! So, I don't know what happened. The account was a
long-standing account and the one that I use most frequently, so it is not as
if there was an incorrect password. The status bar merely said that 0 messages
were downloaded. The log said "invalid pointer operation." I believe some
error messages did appear occasionally up when I was having the problem and
they may have said what the log shows (invalid pointer operation).

The best explanation is that my computer may have groaned under the weight of
too many open windows: probably over 50 at the time (I was mutli-tasking
and had a lot going on).

Anyway, TB is working fine at this time.

Thanks, again.

I don't know if the previous owner of the Yahoo TBOT is willing to do
this, but there, already almost two months passed with no news in this

Do you gete any error message? The reason can be anything from wrong password
or a typing mistake in the server name. Once we have ruled those out, we can
look deeper.

Do you have the status bar enabled in your TB!? If not, please hit shift-crtl-L
while you are in the main window. Then check the account. After that, click on
the status bar (it's at the bottom), and it will open as a separeate window.

I had already re-arranged the folders and didn't have an
opportunity to try this, but will keep it in mind. An undo would
be a great addition, since there's no choice in the window to
restore the previous set-up. I filed the folders into family
members first, then ranked people who need to be answered right
away, then others who are not so frequent. It would be difficult
for TB! to offer a choice to sort this way! :-)Thanks Jack.

The only choice that may need an explanation is the first one: "Items

Yes, that's it! Thanks Thomas. I now see that there's a
window that governs the folder arrangement, and it at least shows

Hi Mike,

Multiple processes means the software has multiple instances running at one
time, as shown in the task manager. Chrome browser does this. I don't really
understand why some programs are designed to do this. It won't affect your
handling of email, but usually means using huge amounts of memory. More about

Thanks, Peter (and Stuart, who also responded), but I want to do this elegantly.     It is about having a "professional appearance."   I see the BCC trick all the time.  I know it works, but I have also received group e-mail where the address is to the group name and would like to know how to do that. Thanks.

Probably not very helpful, but since you mentioned "professional appearance": I regularly receive circulars from my embassy and also from different foreign chambers of commerce with their own email address in the TO field and everybody else in BCC. I do find that professional. - Just my 2 cents' worth.

I am using version 6.0.12 with an even more obsolete Help File, so
your mileage may vary. :-)

I've found that if you start a new email and place your cursor in the TO field,
the little address book icon appears at the far right of the field. Clicking on
the icon will of course open your address book. Select a group (folder) and open
it. In the column of arrows the second one down is a double-right arrow. When
you click on that double-right arrow it will place the name of the group
(folder) in the box to the right. However, you'll see that if the group has two
names as in "The Group", it will reverse the names as "GroupThe". Take that into
consideration.

I tried it with a folder I have called MISC and it displayed it in the right box
as "Misc_handle " so you'll probably have to play around to get it to
display correctly.

Good luck.

Thanks, Peter (and Stuart, who also responded), but I want to do this elegantly.     It is about having a "professional appearance."   I see the BCC trick all the time.  I know it works, but I have also received group e-mail where the address is to the group name and would like to know how to do that. Nope. Yahoo has cooled it's groups service off. Yahoogroups threw the

I guess we could design a new incarnation in Googlegroups, as Lore

I'm sure there is a way how The Bat! can handle this more elegantly,
but here is a solution that works with any client: put your own
address in the TO: field and all other recipients into BCC.

You can just use BCC instead of the To: field for the list. You may still have to put your address in the To: field though.

When I look at Stuart's message from a couple of days ago, his
sig looks perfect at my end. There is no mention of an ad for
whatever virus program which normally has a cut line. The same
for Acheton's message. Jack's shows the derangement and there is
a double cut line in his sig. However, like yours, Mike's doesn't
seem to have a double cut line, but his sig is showing as broken
here as well. A mystery!

Concerning your sig file, I had the same problem it wasn't being recognised the two dashes were there but the space was missing. I was creating my sig files in HTML mode which failed I found using plain text to create the sig all was well again. It always used to work in HTML but a while back it stopped working. I just selected all my sig file and then selected plain text and it seemed to work. Hope this helps Jack.

Mike

Difficult to reply to you, as you are top-posting.

No, it does not make sense, as it means you cannot read it properly. And over
here, it does not have (even when I leave your mails as HTML), all lines are
properly wrapped. So I am a bit surprised that it happens to you.

Hmmm, very interesting. When I reply to this (your) email, I'm replying with
your email quoted in the my reply. Your entire sig appears, cut mark, Warmest
regards etc. If I "select" (highlight) your cut mark, the highlight stops after
the two dashes. It does not stop after the trailing dash as you would expect
indicating that the trailing space is not there. This is what prompted me to
remark on it in the first place.

However, since this email also contains my original email to you, my sig is
displayed also which means mine didn't work either. If I try to select
(highlight) my cut mark. It will highlight the two dashes but not the trailing
space. Actually since my sig appears in the first place it would indicate that
my cut mark doesn't work also. And I *know* my cut mark is dash, dash, space.
It would seem that TB is stripping the trailing space on our cut marks thereby
rendering them inoperative. Or I've totally misconstrued the function of the cut
marks in the first place.

Let me try to write a very long line because I have never experienced what you

That appears to be an icon used by Anti-Spam Sniper. It is used to classify

Not sure if this will help because I'm using an older version of TB but if you
go to OPTIONS-PREFERENCES-EDITOR PREFERENCES, then in the box that appears is
"Wrap text at xx characters".

By the way, your cut-mark doesn't seem to be working. It seems to be lacking the
trailing space. It should be DASH-DASH-SPACE.

Good luck.

I wonder whether it is a bug, or whether the filters work correctly and find
the search string somewhere else in the many headers.

@Tom: Can you say something about this? Even if it is the whole email address,
maybe it is contained somewhere also in the headers? - Sounds like a weird
question, but I use search extensively and cannot confirm that there are
results that do not match the search string.

I hardly do any searches for email, but if Header is an option, it
should work. You may need to open a bug report.

Anyway, until you are sure that searching Header works, for all
correspondence with one person you can search for Sender .OR.
Recipient.

Also, you may want to set up Options/Preferences/Address History.

Thanks,
I do use sender or recipient too but sometimes you are just searching for all
correspondence with one
person and then it would be good to use header. I think I did this in the past
