Arghh! I unchecked this option. I then closed and reopened the Options
dialog box to see if it was still unchecked (it was). However, the "New
version available" message has since reappeared. On opening the
Options dialog box, I noted that the "check for updates" option has
somehow been enabled again. I've looked first thing each morning
since, and it seems that the option "auto re-enables" every day :(

Out of curiosity I ticked the box for "Check for updates when the Bat starts"

I'm on 5.8.8 and the update option is there for that version. It
wasn't for the version of TB 5 for which I upgrated. IIRC, 5.8.8 was
the latest stable version of TB5 last time I checked and I don't want

[29 KB] http://thebat.zetema.de/zip/glyph_original_v3_to_v2.zip

I adapted the v3 Glyph for Version v1/v2, unfortunately the quality is
not the best.

Correct. The v2 versions used the "glyphs.bmp" file, v3 however uses an
entirely new system, allowing for different icons sizes and such.

Hello Chuck,

you can use your own Glyph Set, by using the Batskin.xml.
You find a documentation of the Batskin.XML file here:
› http://thebat.zetema.de/batskin_docu_en.html (English)
› http://thebat.zetema.de/batskin_docu_de.html (German)

If you need only the Batskin.xml:
[3 KB] http://thebat.zetema.de/zip/batskin_XML_org_360.zip

You can use this Glyph Set as a template, there is a install instruction
inside the Zip-archiv:
[126 KB] http://thebat.zetema.de/zip/glyphs_original_350.zip

At present there are only few Glyph Sets, which were adapted for the
version v3.5 and higher. Here you find an overview:

I have copied BMP file to bat directory where thebat.exe resides but

I don't know about other glyphs, but this is what you do with the minimal ones:

Close TB!

Copy both minimal.png and minimal-small.png to the TB directory,
choose a size (I like the middle 24 x 24) open the folder and copy the
batskin.xml you'll find inside also to your TB directory.

Start TB! up again.

You should have done that before setting up accounts, because it would
have saved you work. Now that you have set them up already, I wouldn't
reimport the old registry key any more, because you will lose the info
you have already typed in. The registry key will be overwritten.

Since TB is running on your machine now, just go ahead and continue

Close TB.

Windows: Start / Run / Regedit.

The registry editor will open.

Find the key HK_Current_User / Software / RIT and highlight it.

Go File / Export and export the key to a convenient location.

For restoring the key after you have followed Alexander's

will import it automatically. Open TB and see your settings restored.

Two Bat fiascos out of two Bat "upgrades" must be some kind of record, too.

Unfortunately, I'm basically forced to post this way because I'm posting from a
LOUSY, web-based e-mail client that my provider supplies. Otherwise I wouldn't
be able to post/read at all.

Hopefully you'll bear with me until I can get back to using TB.

And, no, I don't expect "upgrades" to mess things up *this* badly, where I'm
basically dead in the water, and backups won't even help me. It's never
happened to me before. Ever.

And *of course* it was a nice step-by-step set of instructions (and my thanks
go out to Alexander for at least trying to help me), provided you're used to
doing that kind of stuff. But I'm not.

No, he didn't explain how to backup the registry key, so it was a good
opportunity for you to do so, or so I would have thought.

And the mods can either learn to be more flexible when someone basically has no
other choice, or I suppose they could ban me. Because I can't do anything
about it right now.

Maybe if they spent more time helping me than they're spending slapping me with
assorted fish, I'd be up and running by now and able to fully comply with the
list's rules. I'm not a scoflaw by nature.

No, I'm not in a very good mood right now.

And if you think that you're "annoyed"...

I can't remember the previous conversation, but lets try to get it flying
again.

One of the (albeit cumbersome) methods that has been practiced with success
in the past was...

1. Completely back up your old installation (registry keys, installation
directory, mail directory - don't use TB's internal backup function, but
simply copy the files manually to a safe location).

2. Uninstall the entire program, including the mail directories, and
re-install it from scratch, without restoring your backups.

3. Re-create your accounts as they were before (same names, same pathes for
mail directories) - one by one. For each account you created, copy the
files you backed up before back, then check if the program is still
running. This way, you can identify the account thats giving you the
headache.

4. When you found the problematic account, try to remove/rename the account
configuration files (account.xxx) one by one. You will eventually find the
configuration file that is causing the problems.

When you found it, do NOT delete the file!!! Preserve it. You can send it
to the TB developers with an information about the problems the file
caused, so that they can look into it, to avoid such problems in the
future.

The program FREEZES at the opening splash screen.

I can leave the computer and come back an hour later (waiting for it to load)
and the splash screen is still there and nothing else. The program just won't
open.

As I explained previously, I reinstalled version 3.5.1 several times, rebooted
several times, and still just get the freeze at the splash screen. Then the
error message.

>What happens? Any error or warning?

I get the Microsoft error message, and it asks for permission to send it to
Microsoft, which I did.

Repeatedly.

>Did You installed new version from scratch or upgraded old one?

I "upgraded" from 3.5 to the newest version, 3.5.1.

What system do
You have? etc. etc.

HP Pavillion Notebook, 512 MB RAM, Windows XP Home, SP2, totally patched and up
to date.

I know this isn't a great amount of information, but it's all I have at this
time.

Using Smiley Images [was Re: New version threading]

2005-05-14 Thread Mary Bull
Hello Steve!

On Saturday, May 14, 2005, 1:14 PM, you wrote, in part:

>

Smileys work from text handles that call images. You cannot view them
in the Edit Mail Message window.

To view them in View Message windows of any kind (including VFs and
Browse Mail Ticker), you have to select RTV. A handy right-click
context menu for the message body will let you switch from PTV to RTV.
In that same menu, tick the box for Smileys.

(There's a place in the Main Window Options/Preferences/Viewer-Editor
to choose HTML/Rich Text View, plus a check box for Smileys, also.)

You have a set of Default Smileys plus their .msl handles in The
Bat!/Images folder.

To put one of those in, just type the handle (or c&p it into your
message body text.) Be sure to include the enclosing colons ( : : )
with no space between handle and colons. Important: be sure to have a
space on either "outside" of the colons.

To use the additional images (not all of them Smileys, though we have
them on the Smiley page--we have a large collection of flags, too),
download them from:

http://www.PCWize.com/thebat/PCWSmileys.php

Put the pcwimages folder in The Bat!/Images. Also, put the
pcwsmileys.msl file in The Bat!/Images.

The Default folder there is your collection of images that came with
TB!, and default.msl, which you can open in a text reader such as
Notepad is your collection of handles for those.

So, after you get the PCWize Smiley page Smileys, you'll have 2
folders and 2 .msl files in The Bat!/Images.

Forgive me if I'm redundant. A look in the Images folder alone would
have been enough for you to figure this out, I'm sure.

If I haven't told this clearly, please ask. I guess I really should
work up a QT with a mini-tutorial for answering questions about using
Smileys. :)

I'm tickled to tell you how to play with these, as I am the Official
Keeper of the Smileys! :) Hope it's okay to brag--actually I'm just
Leif Gregory's helper with this.

9Val had the original Smileys-called-from-text-handles idea, and then
Leif (I think with some more input from 9Val), expanded on it. Some of
us on TBOT were privileged to help beta-test the page, and then Leif
asked if I would help him out as the page's administrator.

Die-hard PTV users don't have much use for the concept. Others, like
me, have had an immense amount of fun with them. :)

It's entirely your choice.

Advantages: You get to try and use all the shiny new features.
Disadvantages: You may get snagged by "unexpected twists" in them.

The current improvements are focused on IMAP operation, with each
new release seeing numerous bug fixes. If that interests you then an
upgrade is a must.

I'm pretty much enjoying v2 here. I think Jonathan is using IMAP
accounts exclusively. The new IMAP support is still in the teething
stages and it would appear that its performance varies greatly depending
on the IMAP server it interacts with. So, if you're using POP, you'll
not be experiencing Jonathan's problems.

Unfortunately I doubt it, if anything was attempted, they would
probably be able to get away on a technicality on what the software is
designed to do, and not what the software is being used to. After all,
software writers cannot always be held accountable for the software
they write if done in good intentions. For example, they could claim
that the software was originally designed to be used to send mail to
willing participants. Unless you can prove otherwise, the software is
just being miss-used (just like TB could be with the mass-mailer
option).

Is this saying that it needs the X-Mailer header in order to get mail

Not much, I'm afraid - educate e-mail users, change the world and weed

The intpack doesn't contain only libraries, but also translations of

features to TB. I suppose one collection is easier to maintain than

The message is valid, it is the encoding? I do not actually know.
I do know that every one I have received had this certificate info:

S/MIME Certificate is invalid
The issuer of this certificate chain was not found.

The senders were not all using TheBat! but some were.
Maybe that will help someone track down the issue.

Yes, I am, but the issue was also "fixed" in beta 1.60k which is what
I upgraded to from whatever version was on the download page a couple
weeks ago, before version 1.60m.
Using "internal" do you get an "invalid signature" attachment?

TheBat! by default sets it as: Internal Implementation

Well, maybe

I don't know if this is the same problem, but in my message list,
message <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, "Re: m v. h"
from Michael Cusac, is followed by a message from Michael Disabato with
subject "Re: Time for a TB! newsgroup?"

With the preview window open, when I move from Cusac's message to
Disabato's, Cusac's continues to display in the preview window
(headers and all). If I double click on Disabato's message, it opens
in a new window, but is blank with no headers

And it didn't help to turn off HTML view.

I'm running 160h (not brave enough to upgrade to m!).

You may have hit a point here.

I suspect that one of the routes to a bug laden area is a massive
upgrade, meaning jumping from a 1.4x to a 1.60 version. Or going
backwards because of being unsatisfied. It seems to create problems.
Personally, I never downgrade by a far margin and have no problems
with TB!. I've used all released versions and tried just about every
beta. I've never lost mail out of the blue. When I see plans to make a
massive upgrade or downgrade posted, I usually look out for the
complaints and hope the person backed up.

Though real mishaps do occur, I do think that most of the negative
stuff that I've read are about program limitations or complaints based
on a poor or faulty understanding of TB! and its functionality.
Another contributor is that some users try to make TB! work *exactly*
how they want or exactly how the previously used clients work and
little issues/limitations come up that prevent this. Little issues
that often just require a different approach but there's a resistance
to welcoming a different approach so the implemented method is
criticised and the complaining starts. I'm not really saying anything
is particularly wrong with this. I just don't see that many posts
about TB! causing data loss and under these circumstances it's very
unlikely to be TB! but a system problem.

I'm not sure I agree completely. I had previously stated that I
migrated through three versions without any problems. That is
different than saying that I have not found any problems in the
software.

Some people who tend to "break" software more than others are not
necessarily using it in more imaginative ways, but have just not become
"trained" in the bug-free path through the software. It is often less
a result of imagination and more a result of newbieness that a user
will stray into the bug-laden areas of a program. And then there is
also the factor of how predisposed the user will be to mention the
problems.

As the user base increases, imagination plays steadily decreasing role.

What version of Windows are you running? Older versions of Windows
(95, 98) need their common control DLL's upgrading for toolbars and
buttons in some applications to work properly. I have no idea if
this affects TB! but it certainly caught me out with some of my
  development projects in the past.

If you have a modern version of IE installed then you've already got
the updates, otherwise you can get them from the MS site.

Apologies if this not relevant / already tried, etc.

My sentiments exactly.

It was a breath of fresh air reading it. :-)

He did something that is not all to common nowadays: Instead of just
stating his discontent, he just wanted to notice the good things in
life.

Considering that many people make their discontent with an application
into a "What a crap" statement, it was high time to read something
positive.

Hello...
I have ran TheBat! for years now and have never ever had any issues
like the ones people post here.
I know that means nothing to those that do seem to have issues, but
I just fail to understand how you all run into these problems. I have
used TheBat! on Win95, Win98, Win98se, Win2kPro, Win2kServer, WinXP.
I have used many many versions, Beta and release.
I've updated, installed new, dragged my "mail" folder back to new
setups.. Everything goes smooth.
Never had any issues.
Anyway, thanks again for a great product.

No hassle with OE? Only when one doesn't pay attention to warnings
about security holes. One of the most frequent tips for being on the
safe side is, to use up-to-date software (especially OS and
applications connecting the computer to other machines).

And then, what about the automatization processes (like templates)
that TB! offers over OE? Even the interface of OE is much more
complicated than TB!'s, trading usability for good looks.

Not to forget, his statistics is

a) plain wrong
b) not even "naive" but stupid.

Consider this: One member of the list asks for advice about a
"problem" (in quotation marks because I mean it to be the mathematical
term). Now fifty questions come in about the specific task at hand, as
the original post didn't mention enough particulars. after having
re-defined the problem another 50 answers come in. Now we stay at 102
postings. From half of them spring other discussions, some of them TB!
related like "I don't like the editor", some of them asking for other
apps like "that reminds me, has anyone seen a cheap all-purpose
editor". And then there are the fun posts, "Has anybody heard yet,
Stephen Jay Gould died recently ...".

Not to forget meta-discussions like this message.

For the record, I don't think there are as many postings in OE-related
newsgroups (for various reasons). I know for sure that Word newsgroups
have about 200-500 messages per day (all together). Most of them are
really about bugs and difficulties.

Do they also give you several updates per month? You see, you don't
need to outdate TB if you don't want to. Friends of mine just do it
every 2 years or so, which is about the same frequency as OE. No
update no hassle!

If OE had a list like this, I bet you would see several thousand
postings a day. I believe there are some NG's dedicated to that piece
of software. Check them out and find that TBUDL list is peaceful,
helpful, and to the point. :-)
