I also read my emails in white text on a black background.

I know that's possible and I defend your right to use it, even though
I don't.

It's about choice.

I don't think so but I've never tried that. I was able to change the colors I
wanted to change from within TB as described in a previous post.

OK, thanks for that info - I should look into doing some tweaking, too,
then. :-)

If you want the ultimate tweak site go to http://winaero.com. All his stuff is
free. He has a context menu tweaker that doesn't work correctly for me but
there is a lot of other great stuff. i.e pin odd stuff to the win 8 start menu,
add to the ALT X menu

Actually, the colour shouldn't change. As long as the message is
unread, it is on bold face, and that changes to normal once it is
opened.

I haven't played with colours in v5 yet, but will test it soon.

The selected message in the upper right pane consists only of SUBJECT, FROM,
TO, RECEIVED etc., not the entire message and it's not the actual text color to
which I'm referring (which is black, bold if unread) but the transparent
background color shading the entire line. Sorry for the confusion.

I was prompted to try and find it myself and it seems I was successful. It's in
OPTIONS + PREFERENCES + MESSAGE LIST + COLOR GROUPS. Duh! Since I've never
created a color group of my own, the only one available for me to EDIT is
GENERIC GROUP. It's not particularly easy to understand because of the names
chosen to represent different things in your display but if you play around with
it, eventually you'll get something usable. Which I did. Don't overlook the
tabs in the middle of the EDIT COLOR GROUP box.

No worries: I understood you correctly and was referring to the same
line in the message list.

You are right! I handn't checked before sending my mail and last time
I used colour groups, there weren't so many options IIRC.

Personally, I don't think I need all these options as I am perfectly
happy with the bold/unbold toggle for unread/read, but other people

Does anybody know where those colors can be changed?

Isn't that controlled by the Windows colors for selected and unselected
text in Control Panel? (And not from a The Bat setting.) Right click on the
Desktop, select Properties or Personalize (etc., depending on your
Windows version, look for Colors (etc.)...
