"z" is for words of Greek origin, "s" for words of Latin origin - or
the other way round perhaps - the important thing IMHO is that one be
consistent, or conziztent, but not consiztent nor conzistent.

Down here in Oz we use "ise" instead of "ize" in most cases, AFAIK.

KR It depends on where you are: 's' is the British spelling, 'z' is the American.

Another  one I have seen is centre (English) - center (US) in MS Word of
all things using UK English
