In your POP settings, you have to add "recent:" before you username in
order to receive messages that have already been downloaded by another
computer.

Example: My username is tom...@thebat.net, so in TB!'s transport
settings for mail retrieval by POP, I have recent:tom...@thebat.net

I have long thought about using a local POP server to download my
messages from all accounts, and then pointing my TB! installation at
that local server. I spent a couple of evenings looking into this
again a few weeks ago, but drew a blank in the end.

If you decide to use WUALA, I'd love to know if it does what
you need it to do.

After the initial setup the only hiccup I have ever experienced with
WUALA is a *sometimes* message that tells me that WUALA had to close
because of a program conflict. This always happens in the middle of
the night when my computer is not being used by me but is engaged in
crowd software solving the world's problems. It never happens during
the times I'm using the computer. Simply re-starting WUALA gets it
going again.

You are right, let's get to your problem which, as you have seen, is not
easy to solve if at all possible. Well, it would be if you used IMAP,
but you are not for that. And I agree with you.

> ...mail is allowed to remain on the server after download for at least
> 90 days...

I assume this is in your private domain, right?

> ...with respect to gmail, forever,...

And I assume this is with your current setting at Gmail, right? And that
you don't want to leave your email at Gmail servers *forever*, right?
Otherwise, if you didn't mind, then it would be best to use IMAP.

> b. mail that is sent from one computer is not seen by the other

AFAIK, that is normal using POP accounts, CCing yourself wouldn't be
needed with IMAP (I think).

> c. once gmail is downloaded to one computer, it will not download to
> the other computer.

That's because it is marked as read with the first download.

That is my setup too, so I can access my email (by IMAP) from my phone
and tablet. Have you tried to disable IMAP? I have not tried myself, but
maybe doing so the account would just be (or behave) like a normal POP
account like in your private domain. Why don't you crate a new Gmail
account just for testing this?

> I like the idea of being able to download the mail to my computer

Same here. That is why my setting in Gmail is "delete Gmail's copy". The
only "problem", which I don't mind at all, is that after I download
messages with TB those messages will not be available from my tablet or
phone.

I do. But I will still suggest creating a second Gmail account, disable
IMAP and test.

Well, having started this thread, I would like to bring it back to my
problem: which is synching the use of The Bat on two computers so
that I can access my accounts from either computer.

After having placed a separate installation of TB on my new laptop for
several days, and with the situation that each computer has its own
message base, and with respect to both gmail and private domain
accounts, mail is allowed to remain on the server after download for
at least 90 days with respect to gmail, forever, I have been able to
determine several things:

a. mail on my private domains gets downloaded to both computers, so
long as the download is within the time the mail is set to remain on
the server

b. mail that is sent from one computer is not seen by the other
computer unless I copy myself on the message

c. once gmail is downloaded to one computer, it will not download to
the other computer.

When I look at the gmail settings for my account on the internet, I
see that POP is enabled for all mail after a given date in 2006; and
that IMAP is enabled.

Thus, gmail is set up for BOTH POP and IMAP.

I like the idea of being able to download the mail to my computer
rather than run the risk of having it sit out on a server in the
middle of who knows where.

So, it seems the only way to ensure that mail on both computers is
synched is to use some sort of synching program.

On a related thread, "Adding The Bat to a new computer on a home
network" Jack La Rosa recommended www.wuala.com to use for synching
folders on two computers.

Does everyone agree or do you have other suggestions for this purpose?

I would have said "webmail" exactly defines a service, although some
webmail providers also enable (and may charge for) other interfaces
such as POP/SMTP or IMAP. And some providers of POP or IMAP email
accounts provide a "webmail" interface, or users can use portals such
as mail2web.

Gmail is the other way around. It is IMAP which allows POP/SMTP. Webmail
does not define the type of server (and service), it just a way of
accessing it, an e-mail client. You can access IMAP, as IMAP, with TB and
many other clients too.

I must admit that is a bit peculiar, yes. But, on the other hand, I

I don't know the specifics of how they set it up. I always considered
it to be webmail that allowed POP/SMTP just like yahoo, with the extra
of IMAP access just like gmx.

I suspect it is a deliberate decision by google, just like not
allowing POP download of incoming messages when you were the sender of
the message.

Without looking, I know that is what I have set there. I always pick

The settings in TB! effect what TB! tells the POP server during
message download. The fact that telling TB! to "keep messages on
server for X days" works with all providers except gmail suggests that
gmail deviates from the POP protocol. Or else that everybody else
does.

It doesn't much matter: my gmail account is rarely used, and I usually
download messages just once.

For me, I have a dynamic IP adress at home but Gmail only blocks me

Gmail ignores whatever is set in your email client.

When you set up POP, you have to choose between "mark Gmail copy as

I guess this depends on gmail's interpretation of your settings, which
may differ from everybody else's.

For my gmail account, which I access by POP, the messages appear to be
deleted once downloaded despite my TB! setting to leave them on server
for X days afterwards. As well as being no longer available by POP,
messages I have downloaded are immediately missing via the gmail web

I have on several occasions (including, just recently, "copying" my TB user
directories and settings over to a new Win 7 desktop from my not-so-new Win
7 laptop) used the backup/restore functionality with complete success.

Obviously, YMMV...

These procedures were originally done with V.2.04.7, and have since (maybe
the last 5 years or so) been done with V.4.2.44.2.

[I still miss using ol' V.2.04.7, though... ]

I do have to say that, many years ago, with V.2.04.7, I did try incremental
(i.e., "create an update to an existing archive") backups for a short time
(it seemed like a nice idea) and did get flaky results, but I since then
(for about the last 14 years now, I think) I have used the complete (i.e.,
"standard") method with complete success.

I routinely make two backups - one backup of just my settings and address
book, and one a complete backup - every couple of months or so, just for
safety's sake. However, when I set up a new installation of a new PC, I
make a fresh pair of backups just before "restoring" TB on the new PC.

AFAIK, you see email in your cell phone because it is using IMAP to access your
account. What are you using in TB, POP or IMAP? If POP, what is your
setting for "When messages are accessed with POP" in Settings ->
Forwarding and POP/IMAP in your Gmail account?

Thanks, Chris,

I followed your advice and was able to just copy the whole TB
directory. I didn't use ZIP or RAR; I just copied and pasted,
although it took a while.

Now there is a new problem: I downloaded e-mail from all my gmail
accounts and discovered that e-mail downloaded on to one computer does
not then load on to the second computer when mail is downloaded to the
second computer. In the wee hours of the morning, this is not a
problem, as there are few messages being sent, and they are most
unimportant. G-mail is left on the server forever, so it's not as if
it is being deleted upon download. Moreover, I can still see the newly
downloaded e-mail on my cell phone. So, why does a download to one
computer on the network preclude a download of the same mail to the
second computer? Is it because the computers are using the IP
address on the public side of the modem? If so, is there any
solution besides using a synchronization program?

Synchronization is fine while both computers are inside on the same
network. But, if I go away for a business trip for a 2-4 days,
and I download mail, then my wife won't see it until I return. Is
there a solution?

In my experience TB's internal backkup and restore is totally
unreliable, and has been for years. It should either be repaired or
removed !

I now use Second Copy, which you can trial with no usage restrictions
during the trial, or just RAR up the whole TB! directory structure and
transfer like that. I use RAR rather than ZIP as it seems the
resulting file is more compact, and its error checking is better.

Quite why something as important and basic as an internal backup and
restore function in an e-mail client remains broken and regularly
reported as such, while frivolities are added, I have no idea :(

Unable to restore from backup to new laptop

2014-02-26 Thread Achdut18
OK. Anxious to set up TB! on my new laptop, I was unable to wait for
a response to my most recent post, and went ahead and followed the
advice that Thomas Fernandez gave in his post from Feb. 18, 2014.

a. I downloaded the .msi file for thebat_pro_6-0-0.msi to my laptop, as
copied from my older computer and ran it.

b. I also plugged into the laptop an external hard drive, which had a
backup folder with the file, autobackup.tbk.

c. When I opened the newly installed TB! on my laptop, I was prompted
to designate a location for the data file and specified the default
location (The Bat! in Application Data).

d. I then was prompted to either set up an account or restore from
backup. I restored from the .tbk file on my external hard drive.
Initially, I was asked which of my accounts I wanted to restore and
specified all of them.

e. Next, the Maintenance Center appeared saying "Restore is in
progress. Please wait - it can be a long process..." But almost
immediately an access violation pop up appeared. I clicked "ok" and it
disappeared, but the Maintenance Center was left hanging. No
progress showed in the window, and I couldn't cancel or delete it.
After about a half hour, I used Task Manager to shut down TB!.

f. I uninstalled the TB! I also tried to use System Restore to go
back to a point in time prior to installation of the TB!. The laptop
refused to complete that process and suggested my anti-virus was
preventing that from taking place. However, disabling the anti-virus
did not resolve this problem, so, I gave up trying to use system
restore.

g. Since TB! had successfully uninstalled, I tried to reinstall TB!
TB! reinstalled, but this time, I was not prompted about which
accounts to set up or download from system restore, nor was I
prompted to choose a location for the data files. Also, this time,
when TB! opened, the folder tree showed all my accounts, but they were
all empty!

10. I went to "tools"/restore in TB! and attempted to restore from the
file on the external harddrive. The same thing happened as before: an
access violation pop up appeared. This time it reads:

"Access violation at address 00DE7C52 in module "TheBat.exe." Read of
address ."

I clicked "OK" and exited out of this; however I did leave the
maintenance center open even though no "progress" is appearing in the
window. I will leave this where it is at all night, but I expect
nothing to come of it.

So, why am I getting an access violation message? Does it have
anything to do with the fact that the backup was created by ver. 5.8.2
of TB!, but I used the 6.0.0 msi file to set up TB on my laptop?
And while this is not, strictly a TB issue, does anyone know why my
computer won't go to a restore point that immediately precedes the
installation of the software?
