As one who long ago transitioned his company off of Quark XPress, I
wholeheartedly support the entire statement below.

Re: [TCP] Hi Gang, Called Back for a Project

2010-03-18 Thread Bill Swallow
They want a tiny new figure after Figures 1a, 1b 1c (all related to each
other). This new figure would not be related to 1a, b c. So is it possible
or not to make the new figure 1d? It would save me a ton of work but I know
it would be kind of like cheating.

If it's unrelated, it shouldn't be labeled 1d. Do the right thing and
renumber them all. If that means spending 30 minutes going page by
page and hand-numbering because of how the files were created, so be
it. Do it right, and do it well. That will sell you better than any
30-minute-of-time-saving cob job.

First - I'm glad you got something, even if it is a small job.

Second - I agree with Bill - do it right.

If you have to cheat - cheat on the side of not numbering it at all but
personally, I would explain to the company the limitation of the software
(and tell them there are other tools that would allow you to automate this
in the future if they ever want to migrate to one of those tools. For now,
you are left with the option of numbering it incorrectly and possibly
confusing the user...or doing it right...

I'm working on an 80 page book containing 40 figures with respective text
references scattered throughout. I don't have any automatic way to update figure
numbers and text references. Using Quark on a Mac, that aspect is all manual.
TOCs are automatic though.

My question is:
