Unfortunately you can't apply your rules about sanity to this thing
called autoconf.
you're missing at least the removal of the flag in the standards section of the
man page.
I agree with deraadt though, this needs a check of ports.

note we also have --mmap for the sole purpose of compat. i'd say keep it.
anything that *does* check the version will get a number it doesn't like and
then do something "sensible".
Keep the version, whatever it is.
The "check of ports" is annoying, because some of these checks may be in
scripts and happen at runtime for ports.
The way it usually happens is:
something breaks -> porters don't have time to check too closely -> someone
moves the ports to using gnu grep
Since I can't think of a sane reason to check this and care in any
script, yes, kill it.

Theo pointed out that there may be ports that check the version. I was
considering that too. However, we haven't bumped from 0.9 since 2003.
ggrep is now on 2.22, so I have hope
