http://www.gnu.org/gnu/linux-and-gnu.html says

"Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's
resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part
of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the
context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination
with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux
added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really
distributions of GNU/Linux."

So I think you're right about using Linux term. Sorry for a noise.

That may change, I saw a program on TV recently where Dara O'brien said
hacking is being done on gadgets recently 'not in the traditional
computer science meaning' but in making a gadget do something that it
wasn't intended to do.

Made me laugh and I'm sure you know but I believe the traditional
computer science terms have always been just that.

cracking as beating or finding a weakness in an auth system such as
defeating the encryption or password but using it as intended

hacking as circumventing or beating the auth system not by brute force
etc. but finding a flaw and making it do something it shouldn't like
short circuiting the algorithm.

Hi tech@.

54.html says:

But there's no such thing as Linux X.X.X, there's a Linux kernel X.X.X.
