Yes, all you need is to update to gs6.01 or higher, and your problem is
solved.

Subject:gs2pdf won't use cm type 1 fonts?

hi all,

a short while ago, someone on the list asked how he could get dvips to use
type1 fonts. the answer that was given was to use 'dvips -Ppdf ...'

when i use this, dvips gives the output which i appended below, which AFAIK
shows it is using the type 1 fonts. (i.e., there is mention of .pfb files.)

then i run ps2pdf on the resulting .ps file, expecting to get a
nice-looking pdf-file, but i don't... in acrobat reader, the text looks
positively horrible. in kghostview it is ok, but it still feels as if it
could look better.

when i print the file from acrobat, the letters are very thin and not as
sharp as dvipdfm produces them.

i use the standard computer modern font, and teTeX 1.0 running on SuSE7.1.

could it be that gs is too old? it is version 5.5. and if not, what is
going
wrong?

TIA

joost

Hello,

The problem is solved now as pointed out in my previous email. The puzzle
is How did gv work with gs 5.50?.

That's weird. I just tried the same gv 3.5.8 with both gs5.50 and gs6.50
and it works without any problems. Are you sure that you didn't compile
in any full paths to gs in the gv binary? In State-Ghostscript options
..., it should just say Interpreter: gs

2001-05-26 Thread George J. Wakileh

Hello,

Which programs are you using to view the PS output? Can anybody give any sites where
binaries are found?

I tried to compile ghostview 1.50, but am getting the error messages below.

I am using tetex through cygwin on a PC with Windows 2000.

Thanks for your feedback.

RE: texinfo.

2001-05-21 Thread George J. Wakileh

Hi Thomas,

Hopefully some other users benefit from this discussion. I think the main
issue was to create the format files texinfo.fmt and pdftexinfo.fmt.

First, I had to generate the format files
$ tex -ini texinfo.ini
$ pdftex -ini pdftexinfo.ini

One can say
$ tex -progname=texinfo fn.texi
but it is enough to say
$ tex fn.texi
and it works.

$ dvips fn.dvi -o
generates the ps output.

Also, pdftex generates the pdf output.
$ pdftex fn.texi

One final issue --- texi2dvi which is equivalent to tex fn.texi, texindex
fn.??, tex fn.texi, tex fn.texi, dvips fn.dvi -o does not work. You just
have to stop it with ^C or ^Z and no output at all. Any idea why texi2dvi
does not work at the time that texinfo is now working?

Thanks very much.

Hi Sebastian,

Thanks very much.

I tried this on kpathsea.texi
$ tex kpathsea.texi
$ texindex kpathsea.??
$ tex kpathsea.texi
$ tex kpathsea.texi
$ dvips kpthsea.dvi -o

I got kpathsea.ps. It's complete and has the index.

Most likely, I need to get another texi2dvi. The version I have is $Id:
texi2dvi,v 0.43 1999/09/28 19:36:53 karl Exp $.  Yes, that's it.  I found
texi2dvi version $Id: texi2dvi,v 1.1.1.3 1998/03/24 18:20:32 law Exp $ that
worked. Tonight, I can search CTAN for a new version, and hopefully that
should solve the problem.

What is interesting --- In several texinfo files, I noticed the Table of
Contents comes at the end of the document.

Kind regards,

George

How does tetex handle pdflatex

texinfo.

2001-05-19 Thread George J. Wakileh

Hello,

Thanks to Thomas and Sebastian for their answer on pdflatex.

Thru tetex, I tried
texi2dvi fn.texi
but nothing happens. With a ^C, I got
I cannot find texinfo
However, texinfo is in
/usr/share/texmf/tex/texinfo

My question is --- Does texinfo need a .fmt file like tex, latex, ...? I could see
there is a texinfo.ini

I know this is not specific to tetex, but because I am not running it from tetex, I am
not sure what is going wrong.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Cannot find binaries.

2001-05-18 Thread George J. Wakileh

Hello Thomas,

I am running into big trouble. I deleted everything and re-installed
tetex-beta (cygwin) and tetex-texmf. Now, I am unable to get the format
files after texhash and texconfig init. The problem is that the binaries
cannot be found although they are under /bin. I deleted ls-R and repeated
the procedure, but things are the same.

Any hint what is happening?

Thanks.

RE: Error: kpsewhich cannot find file modes.mf

2001-05-14 Thread George J. Wakileh

Thanks, Thomas.

I had ls-R, so I deleted it. I ran texconfig, which generated a new ls-R,
and things are fine.

I could not understand how texconfig generates the format files. It opens
the fmtutil.cnf files, and then ...

Anyway, I did fmtutil --all, but that only generated omega.fmt. That is
because texklib and texmflib which I downloaded yesterday have only
omega.ini

Is there any package on CTAN that provides
tex.ini, latex.ini, *etex.ini, *elatex.ini, pdftex.ini, pdflatex.ini,
*pdfetex.ini, *pdfelatex.ini, lambda.ini, amstex.ini, bplain.ini,
bamstex.ini
needed by tetex and places them in the right directories?

I can then use fmtutil --missing or fmtutil --all to generate all format
files (followed by texlinks) and go from there.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

George

 /usr/share/texmf/metafont/misc

Well, please try to run
  texhash

That should generate /usr/share/texmf/ls-R.

Thomas

PS: at least, this is the way it works with the unix-version of teTeX. I
have no idea what the cygwin port has changed.

Error: kpsewhich cannot find file modes.mf

2001-05-13 Thread George J. Wakileh

Hello,

I am trying to run tetex under cygwin 1.3.1. I downloaded tetex-beta,
texklib, and texmflib, and did gunzip and tar -xf. Running 'texconfig', I
get

Error: kpsewhich cannot find file modes.mf, although 'modes.mf' is under
/usr/share/texmf/metafont/misc

I also noticed that 'kpsewhich' does not find 'language.dat', but it finds
'texmf.cnf'. kpsewhich is under 'bin' and bin is in my path.

$ kpsewhich texmf.cnf
/usr/share/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf

$ kpsewhich -expand-var='$TEXMFMAIN'
/usr/share/texmf

Any idea what is going on.

Thanks very much for your help.
