Normally, the format files are generated by calling
  texconfig init

This usually happens when running "make install" (installation from
sources) or automatically by install.sh (when installing binaries).
So, something must have gone wrong with your installation. But,
if
  texconfig init
does not generate any error now, you do have a working system.

I downloaded teTeX-src-1.0.tar.gz, teTeX-texmf-1.0.tar.gz and
teTeX-texmfsrc-1.0.tar.gz(texmf tarball isn't it?).

I followed the INSTALL till 6). And I set up PATH, then run "texconfig
confall".
And next I run "texconfig", the configuration window appeaed on
the screen then I closed the window unless set anything.

I thought it was finished install the teTex. I run "tex".

The window showed the error message

"..
This is TeX, Version 3.14159 (Web2C 7.3.1)
I can't find the format file `tex.fmt'!"

I searched /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/web2c,
but I can't find "tex.fmt".

That's all.

Do you know something about this?

Did you follow the instructions, e.g. INSTALL or QuickInstall?
More specifically, did you install the texmf tarball?

I can't find "tex.fmt"

2001-05-24 Thread MidoriOkuno

Hi all.

I installed teTeX-1.0 source version.

I thought that it finished perfectly.
But when I run the tex command, I get the error message.
The message is as follows.

"..
This is TeX, Version 3.14159 (Web2C 7.3.1)
I can't find the format file `tex.fmt'!"

I searched /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/web2c,
but I can't find "tex.fmt".

Then I cheked the world.log(make log file), I found
"#cd /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/web2c &&
(rm -f plain.fmt; ln -s tex.fmt plain.fmt)

Where is the "tex.fmt"?

Please any advise for me.

Thanks.

There is a bug in the original Debian 2.1 tetex packages. There are
updates to stable available from the FTP sites. Use:
 dselect update
 apt-get dist-upgrade
to fix your problem.

If you need more help, please email me privately.
