Thanks for the suggestions for solving my problem. It turns out I
didn't read the INSTALL file carefully enough. I still needed to install
that enormous texmf package. Everything's up and running now.

I'm trying very hard to install teTeX v1.0 on my Linux system.
Whenver I'm building the program, texconfig gives me this error:
/usr/local/teTeX/bin/i686-pc-linux-gnu/texconfig:
/tmp/texconf6997/logfile: No such file or directory
I see this line in the texconfig script:
mkdir
Hmm. Typically a mkdir command like that would only fail if one of
the directories further up the chain hadn't been created yet. So perhaps
this texconf6997 was never created, and so it can't create logfile beneath
it?
