Indeed: when using the supplied t1lib (i.e. no --with-system-t1lib) or our custom t1lib 1.3.1 installation, xdvi works fine. (This is now with tetex-src-beta-20020530.) I suggest adding an appropriate t1lib check (for version or functionality) to configure. Thanks for your help.
