As far as I can see, the binary version available through teTeX homepage
(powerpc-rhapsody.tar.gz) is older than the version available through
TeXShop page.

Probably the age of distribution. It seems to me that the version on teTeX
pages is 1.0, and TeXShop pages have 1.0.7. Newer version probably works
better, at least in generating PDF, which you will be doing a lot in MacOS
X.

Only problems I had in transition were because of different character sets
used by Linux and MacOS X. Linux uses Latin1 and Apple in its infinite
wisdom decided to use MacRoman in MacOS X. After character set conversion
(Cyclone 1.4.1 does the trick nicely) and changing 

\usepackage[latin1]{inputenc} to \usepackage[applemac]{inputenc}

it mostly works. Some problems with bibliography still remain, but I guess
that's my own fault. The same hyphenation tables should be okay.
