in the attached m-tx source, the bracket in front of the chorals staves
starts too high and is too large. Does anyone have an idea why and how
to fix it?

Do they look OK if you omit this line:
Space: -3 -2 -2 -2 -2 +3
If so, the problem would be that the TeX code emitted by
\mtxGroup does not take into account the settings implied
by the \mtxInterInstrument commands before it.
I won't be able to help any further in that case, apart from

seems to help. So it looks as if the height or the upper ending position
of the bracket gets
Simon, I compiled Froelich (!, after my recent trevails) and I'm not sure I see
the problem. The curl at the bottom of the bracket starts about 1 \internote
below the bottom staff, while the one at the top of it starts about 4
\internote above the top line of the top vocal staff. Did you want
Simon, it seems that you discovered a bug.
Here is a quick fix.
