Yes, OSX is based off of Unix, specifically FreeBSD, but they cut it up pretty good, even the core system and kernel are all customized. OSX can actually run X11 and apps designed for it. Plus with the modern boxes going to Intel based machines, makes it much easier to port apps over from Windows
