You may recall that as Maria began her talk on the anthropology of cavers she
asked the audience why we were at the convention. I raised my hand and said,
It's the gathering of the tribe. She shouted out, Yes, that's exactly what
it is!
Well yeah.

Yes, indeed, that is the purpose of grotto meetings, TSA Convention and TCR, as
well. The physical face-to-face meeting has different characteristics from the
interactions on the Internet. Both are fine, in their own unique ways.

TCR--On this day (the Friday before Labor Day) in 1978 the participants in the
1st Texas Cavers Reunion (TOTR at the time) were gathering at the old cotton
gin in Luckenbach, Texas--89 of um as I recall.___

So how many cavers on this list were there? I was, and can think of about 10 others for sure, probably more. All you Old Timers let us know.
You more recent cavers probably will just want to delete these messages as yet more trivial reminescenses from folks who don't go caving anymore

I was there. Seems like yesterday (yeah, right).

I do remember the 1978 Convention in New Braunfels with fondness since the Army
posted me to Ft Sam for the Adv. NCO Course then.

Logan,
For some reason we missed the first one - around daughter Amy's birthday - but
made second.
Jim and I would need to be on that list of old timers who still go caving, too:)

I was there and so was Jack Ralph.
Also John Etherage and his pit bull who chewed through the 12/3 romex that John
was using to tie him to one place. RIP.

George,
I just checked Jim's caving logs, and he was on a reconnaissance trip to a cave
that would end up being his life's work from then to now. I was home with Amy.
We had all been to the whole NSS Convention in New Braunfels earlier in the
summer - perhaps where we first met you?

Thanks Carl, for all that great historical information and photo.
I see that Michel Siffre and his right-hand man Gerard Cappa signed the register. I had not seen them since the 1972 Midnight Cave project when
Pete Strickland and I and other cavers helped Gerard, Jacques Chabert and crew
