I'm on reddit daily, but I stick with the technical subreddits, but two
that I do read are /r/linuxadmin and /r/linuxhelp that you might like. I
also follow /r/caving but there's not a lot of activity there.

[Texascavers] Related to reddit web service

2018-01-17 Thread David via Texascavers
>From David Locklear

I decided to tinker with reddit today for the first time. My quest to
teach myself Linux has stagnated, and it appears there are quite a few
Linux nerds on reddit, that might can maybe point me in the right
direction.

So while on reddit, I looked around and joined 2 of the caving pages:
r/caving and r/Speleology. Both of which have active post, but mostly
second-hand articles that re-direct to another web source.

I did not see any Texas caving activity on reddit, although some Austin
caver appears to have experimented with it 2 years ago.

If any of you are using reddit, what do you use it for ?

My 2017 resolution to stay off the internet was a super epic failure.

Seems unlikely I will succeed at that, or anything in 2018.

My reddit handle is u/dlocklear01, but not sure what that means yet.

On a different note,

The link below shows some icicles I made in the grass by leaving the faucet
dripping.
( This was our first hard-freeze in almost 15 years in Arcola, Texas.
 Certainly the coldest. )

I got a question for you old-timers:

I hit my elbow funny-bone very lightly last week. I heard a odd crunching
sound. But no immediate pain. The pain I have been experiencing is like
the pain of a staph infection, but under the skin. Is this something that
heals on its own ? The pain has been consistent for 8 days. But I do not
see any sign of injury, nor feel any bumps under the skin.

As super clumsy as I am, I have never broken a bone, except stubbing my
toes really bad several times.

Re: [Texascavers] Sac Actun and Dos Ojos connected

2018-01-16 Thread Mark Minton via Texascavers
"Dry" cavers have considered Sac Actun and Dos Ojos to have been connected for
a few years now. The connection was by way of a dry segment, which diving
purists might not have counted. According to Jim Coke (QRSS), this new
connection is an underwater one, so now everyone agrees that they're connected.
And the connected length is 347 km! 263 km was just the Sac Actun side.

Here's another link to the new connection:

Re: [Texascavers] Texas prisons

2018-01-11 Thread David via Texascavers
They have also banned certified process servers from delivering any kind of
court document, ( at least in east Texas ). This is so ludicrous. It
takes the county constable weeks, what I should be able to do in 15
minutes. It is bad, because it often involves rush court orders
involving child-custody cases. But it just hurts my pocketbook more than
that.

Below are some future campfire stories:

I was twice in a jail cell, once in a paddy-wagon, once kidnapped by rogue
undercover cops and taken to an interrogation cell and probably some other
stuff where I was unfortunately at the scene as a bystander.

First time, I was a businessman model wearing a tie posing with a
skinhead-biker in a jail cell ( for a lawyer ad/photo-shoot in The Houston
Yellowpages ). The attorney probably slipped the judge something of value
to use a closed abandoned jail. The ad was apparently effective and they
later paid me fairly for doing it.
The ad ran in Houston for about 10 years. I was afraid it would be on
billboards, as it was a good photo.

The second time around 1994 was helping my ex-girlfriend's teenage son get
transferred from Matamoros prison in Mexico to a USA prison in El Paso,
Texas. The dumb*** American teen spoke no Spanish and shared a tiny cell
with 9 Mexican men for about 2 years.
I had to go in his cell and check on him. No telling what they would have
done to her, but they would have let her in after the security guards had
their way with her. He slept in the concrete floor with no screen on
windows with just a tiny piece of foam and a cheezy blanket. Part of the
unpleasantness was dealing with the judicial system which was so retarded.
Most of the clerks were male cops who could only type with one index finger
( on an old 1950's style typewriter )I know the teen got released from
El Paso about a year later, and allegedly lived a normal life. I never saw
either of them again.

The paddywagon story I have told many times, lost in the Sierra Madres at
night.

But the story of the rogue undercover cops was a case of mistaken
identity. They were looking for someone else - a private investigator for
some nefarious law firm that I did not work for, and I had nothing
whatsover to do with their issue. It had something to do with their 9-11
stress level as it happened about 3 weeks after the attack, and all the
officers I was dealing with then were pumped up on 5-Day Energy drinks with
little sleep.

But my worst situation ever, was one time I served papers on a dirty cop
from the backseat of his patrol car the day before Christmas Eve. He was
just being a real ***wipe, but never even bothered to cuff me.

I deal with officers a whole lot and I used to know about a hundred on
first name basis. The one I was most friends with shot himself inside of
his patrol car. I had just invited him out for tacos about 2 weeks
before.

I imagine the City of Houston Chief has a very vague idea who I am. I
have emailed him a few times and sent him a Facebook message. His
secretary is as tired of my emails as you all are, as I have emailed her
dozens of times. She does help me once in a blue moon.

The FBI interviewed me at work around 1985, after a person walking on a
path was allegedly found stabbed in Yosemite Village. There must have been
2,000 people just in that part of the park. I do not recall every seeing
the story in the news. But it happened again a few years later and they
allegedly caught that second perpetrator. I have no idea if the cases
were related.

Sometime around 2000, I was stranded in a cheezy motel in Ciudad Victoria,
Mexico traveling by bus and decided to go for a walk after midnight to find
a taco. That was a really bad idea, as there was not a soul on the
streets. 2 cops pulled up to me and interogated me in a dark area for
nearly an hour. I was exhausted and never found a taco. I think that
was a trip that I was coming back from Charles Fromen's beach-house in
Zihautanejo, Guerrero by bus. The memories are all so blurry now.

I have had about six other similar unpleasant incidents with Mexican cops -
mostly the "transitos." They all are bad. And some have even been jailed
or worse in some cities. I do not think Reynosa has had a municipal police
force for 5 years.

Just this week,

The State Dept. issued new travel warnings for Mexico which include the
town my daughter spent the week after Christmas without me.

I can probably dig thru my repressed memories and find other police
stories.I saw cops drag my 2nd grade teacher out of the classroom in
1972. It was my first black teacher and she was female. I just remember
she was yelling Ebonic curse-words at us in a mean tone that I had never
heard a teacher use before. And I probably have a story about a relative
getting arrested, that I should keep stored very deep in repressed memories.

The A.S.S.( with me ) had an unpleasant police encounter in New Braunfels
on 1987 Spring Break. I think I

[Texascavers] Another cheap LED head-lamp

2018-01-11 Thread David via Texascavers
The link below is a head-lamp that I just saw at an Academy Store.

https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1018272812/smith-and-wesson-delta-force-hl-10-headlamp-led-with-3-aaa-batteries-aluminum-black

I would call it a good caving lamp for small kids.

The headpiece part is rugged, but the plastic hinge is possibly eventually
going to need to be epoxied in your favorite position.

It only has a spotlight beam, but seemed suitable for walking size passage.

This is probably more suited as a good hiking light.

If you find one on sale, then it is probably a good deal.

If an adult wants to use it as an auxilary side-mounted light, that might
work well with a little gerry-rigging.

David Locklear

P.S.

I should be able to donate a bottle of cheap wine to a future house-warming
party at the TSC.

[Texascavers] giving away books

2018-01-11 Thread Mixon Bill via Texascavers
As a first step in getting out of the way of the TCMA and the TSS that have
bought my house, I will have open house Thursday of this week (the 10th and
11th) from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m. for friends to come by and pick out any among the
many non-caving books in the living room. I have already removed as many of
them as I can accommodate here at retirement home. The books are free for the
taking, but an opportunity will be present to donate some money to the TCMA or
the TSS if desired. The address of the house is 14045 North Green Hills Loop,
Austin, Texas 78737 (actually in northern Hays County).

The main categories are cartoon books and mass-market science-fiction
paperbacks, but there are also a lot of math and computer books, old college
textbooks, etc., probably amounting to four or five hundred in all.

I have transportation there and back, so the event will actually occur,
contrary to some earlier notes. Please send this on to the UT Grotto Fcebook
group, too. -- Bill Mixon

Alan Montemayor and Cheryl Hamilton will present a talk titled "Madagascar: The
Eighth Continent." The presentation will occur on Thursday, January 11, 2018
from 11:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. in the Training Room at the Edwards Aquifer

is still scheduled. On very rare occasions, we have had to cancel or move the
talk. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Abstract

Please join world travelers Alan Montemayor and Cheryl Hamilton as they present
a program describing their recent trip to Madagascar. Known as the "Eighth
Continent," Madagascar is the world's fourth largest island. Eighty-eight
million years of isolation have resulted in an environment where ninety percent
of the plant and animal species are endemic!

Madagascar features amazing lemurs, octopus trees, six species of baobab trees
and the largest chameleons in the world. Surreal karst landscapes, deep
canyons, lush montane rainforests, highland plateaus and spiny deserts are home
to an abundance of wildlife and nineteen different tribes. Madagascar has great
mineral wealth; however the average resident earns the equivalent of US $2.00
per day. Although deeply rooted in tradition, the Malagasy residents welcome
visitors with warmth, humor and generosity.

Biography

Alan Montemayor and Cheryl Hamilton are retired and love to travel to remote
and interesting places, including all 8 continents and 62 countries so far.
They travel mostly independently, using guided tours only where necessary to
gain access to interesting areas. Alan and Cheryl travel in a perpetual
learning mode, examining the geology, ecology, energy consumption, history,
food and culture of many different areas.

Rolling Food Pantry Initiative

I (Geary Schindel) will be collecting donations of canned and dry goods for a
"Rolling Food Pantry" my wife operates for her clients. Sue is a social worker
and deals with home health care clients. All items will be given to families in
need. Many are homebound, commonly elderly, and some of them are struggling to
meet basic food needs. Donations help bridge the gap until other social

In addition to the minor repairs On the Texas Speleological Center, I think we
should consider if we want to put wood firing strips on the concrete walls for
sheetrock. Foam insulation could be put between the strips. Sheetrocking the
ceiling would not only make the space look finished, but is recommended for
suppression of fire. If we don't do this before we fill the basement, it will
never happen.

The Bexar Grotto is also challenging other grottos around the state to
contribute and try to meet or beat their contribution.

There have been a number of offers and requests over the past week to provide
items or store materials at the new facility, and unfortunately we can’t
accommodate those at this time. While we appreciate everyone’s enthusiasm, we
still need to setup a management team for the property, help Bill Mixon sort
through and remove his items, conduct some minor repairs on the property,
determine the space needs for TSS and TCMA and figure out where everything
goes, then establish a use plan for the property so that we can both meet the
needs of cavers and provide a professional-type space for the Texas caving
organizations.

Thank you!

Re: [Texascavers] Open House

2018-01-08 Thread David via Texascavers
I looked the new TSC place up on Google Maps.

Is that the building down a gravel road.

What is with the fortress like house across the street ?

I would like to someday attend an open house at the TSC, but I would like
to also unload a car-load some of items there for any future yard sale.

Someone suggested to me it would be more efficient to just sell the junk on
Ebay someday, or at a flea-market, and then donate the money to the new
TSC.

One of the items, is a large plywood tool-cabinet that was given to me by
caver Jim McLane. He kept his tools in it that he used to worked on his
speleo-vehicles ( diesel Scout II ) back in the 70's. It is over 7 feet
tall, but skinnier than a large refrigerator. Caver George Sanders nearly
got killed helping me move it out of Jim's garage. Jim never mentioned
there was a ton of giant sheet-glass being supported by it. Of course,
guess who got the blame and had to spend all day cleaning up broken glass ??

What I failed to consider during all that, was that I would end up spending
$ 200 to transport the items that Jim gave me to my storage unit and most
of the stuff if not all of it has little to no monetary value.

Jim passed away unexpectedly 3 months later, which just makes no sense to
me. Something must have really freaked him out after his first heart

[Texascavers] open house to give away _non-caving_ books

2018-01-08 Thread Mixon Bill via Texascavers
As a first step in getting out of the way of the TCMA and the TSS that have
bought my house, I will have open houses Wednesday and Thursday of this week
(the 10th and 11th) from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. for friends to come by and pick out
any among the many non-caving books in the living room. I have already removed
as many of them as I can accommodate here at retirement home. The books are
free for the taking, but an opportunity will be present to donate some money to
the TCMA or the TSS if desired. The address of the house is 14045 North Green
Hills Loop, Austin, Texas 78737 (actually in northern Hays County).

The main categories are cartoon books and mass-market science-fiction
paperbacks, but there are also a lot of math and computer books, old college
textbooks, etc., probably amounting to four or five hundred in all.

I will need rides to and from my house those nights.

Someone please post this to the UT Grotto Facebook pages, too.

Re: [Texascavers] [SWR CAVERS] Pentagon Seeks Laser-Powered Bat Drones

Ken,

Note that I said "future".  Think miniaturization!   LiDARs already
exist that can be carried by a walking caver.  Who knows what will be
possible a couple of decades from now?

Twitter seems to be well suited for letting people know that you are mentally
stable and a genius. Beyond that - the format tends to reinforce an impression
contrary to the aforementioned benefit.

Being none of the above - I avoid that medium of instant gratification.

[Texascavers] Sort of Facebook related

2018-01-07 Thread David via Texascavers
I hope to stay off of Facebook in 2018.

So I was going thru my account and cleaning stuff.

I stumbled on to Tinker Bucksnort.

That was Jim McLane's secret page. He has only been gone 2 years, but I
just could not hit the delete button.

As much as I hate Facebook, there are things it does that are wonderful. I
like that it auto-reminisces for me by sending me a cherished photo that I
misplaced 7 years ago. I like that I can find long lost cousins and old
lost friends. I just now got a message from a girl that I wanted to marry
in 2004, and she is still single and even more mental.

I just use Facebook postings to vent about crazy stuff in the news, but I
do message people when I want to contact them. I just now tried to contact
the former owner of "Bremher Cave."

It does seem like a convenient way to say Happy New Year to acquaintances.

I am not feeling an vibes for Twitter, and I have stopped using all the
other social media platforms.

Cheers,

[Texascavers] Caver music

For those of you that missed the incredible caver band GFB perform NYE, the
video below is a comparison of how awesome it was:

Imagine that sound, but in a basement like garage with 20 people, mostly
semi-old cavers and a few old-timers, and going till 1 in the morning.

[Texascavers] LED light - long term review

2018-01-05 Thread David via Texascavers
I think I mentioned about 2 years ago that I had purchased the light in the
link below.

It is still going strong and really comes in handy. I highly recommend it.

https://www.ebay.com/p/Energizer-Water-Resistant-Adjustable-Pivot-115-Lumens-Floating-LED-Light/2136834966

Yesterday, I dropped it 6 feet vertically on to concrete and it survived.

I suspect adding a little duct-tape would improve its durability.

I will be donating this light at the next function that I attend that has a
consignment sale or door prize award.

David Locklear

P.S.

I would like to thank all the cavers that cheered me up over the past 3
weeks. I was bummed out about both my Sierra Madre trips being cancelled
after purchasing Mexican vehicle insurance and the effort to get a Mexican
vehicle permit, and that my daughter spent most of the holidays without me
and NYE in Mexico. But I will get over it.

Work is starting to trickle in, in spurts. I moved out again today, and
my Sequoia is stuffed full of all the things I normally need. Hopefully, I
can find a cheap clean weekly motel.

Tomorrow, marks the year anniversary since I felt the need to perform full
CPR on my 12 year old daughter. I guess it is just one of those memories a
person has to store in a repressed memory bank, and not to dwell on it. I
thought that she was healthy before the incident, but for the past 12
months, she has been super obsessed with being lazy, in such an extreme way
that it concerns me. I certainly could not take her caving, and probably
not on any easy steep hike, like to the top of Enchanted Rock, or even to
Enchanted Rock Cave. But she is finally starting to like to eat some
healthy foods.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/xx9etqs9fmkvcjx/1129201713280-1.jpg?dl=0

I got her a nice $ 65 toy for Christmas, and she looked at me with that
teenager WTF look, "Really Daddy, a doll??"

[Texascavers] Potential cave lead on Mars

2018-01-03 Thread David via Texascavers
The attached photos shows a potential talus cave on Mars.

The dark abyss is allegedly at least 1/4 inch in diameter. But if you
look carefully at the grains of sand something is blowing or sucking them.
 Right ?

If you see the sagging-p*nis like formation, I feel a caver should name
this lead as Lead. Fill in the name of whoever you nominate.

[Texascavers] Soda-straws on Mars ?

2018-01-03 Thread David via Texascavers
The crystal in the attached photo is allegedly 1/4 inch long and allegedly
formed on the surface of Mars.

Dr. Halliday would call this a speleothem because it likely formed by a
similar process - gravity, capillary-pressure, mineralization from solid to
liquid back to solid, etc..

[Texascavers] A great party

2018-01-01 Thread David via Texascavers
I assume that all the cavers that wanted to party on NYE found a party
somewhere.

I stumbled onto a party of cavers on the far east side of Austin. I was
not formally invited, but I was told of the party at the last minute by
someone who could have chosen not to tell me had they felt inclined to do
so. So I felt the least that I could do, was to show up for a few minutes
and be considerate.

The food and beverage was above average. The music was better than TCR.
The camaraderie was first class. The host was awesome. The venue was
awe-inspiring.

I do not know if I made any friends, but I rekindled some old bonds with
acquaintances. It was a very pleasant surprise to see Melanie Alspaugh
from Switzerland. She has not aged in 20 years.

There was a very light snow for a moment, and while naked cavers were
outside in the hot-tub. There was a nice outdoor fireplace under a tarp
and almost out of the bone-chilling northerly wind.

There was a respectable fireworks show after the countdown.

It looked like maybe those that wanted to get lucky, got lucky.

I would like to especially thank the very talented GFB for playing a hit
song by The Tokens - "The Lion Sleeps Tonight."That really cheered me
up. They nailed it, having never once practiced it.

About 12:30 a.m., I was pondering driving east towards my hometown of
Arcola, when the GFB miraculously started a 4th set of wild crazy R
songs. Special musical guest were Chris Vreeland, Andy Gluesenkamp and
Andy Edwards.

So about 2 a.m., I crawled into the back of my Sequioia and stuffed my
lard-ass into my goretex bivy-sack and fell right to sleep. I had to wake
up 3 times in the night to relieve myself and that was no fun in the bitter
cold. ( I had not come prepared to camp in a wind-chill of 20 degree
weather )

I assume that fragments of the party continued on outside in the freezing
cold and also in the house till probably 4 in the morning.

On a more personal note,

The long solo drive home the following morning ( January 1st, 2018 ) really
sucked. I stopped briefly in Brenham and frolicked in my rental storage
unit. The unit that I am renting is 15 feet tall, so I am laying 1/2"
thick pine boards across the tops of my 10 Gorilla Racks, covering the
lumber in thick plywood sheets to make a makeshift second floor. So far,
I only have 3 and 1/2 sheets of plywood or about 144 sq. ft. of usable
floor( 1,300 cu. ft. for stacking boxes. ) It does not feel rickety.

So whoever inherits this junk someday, will also get about $ 500 in quality
lumber and lots of heavy-duty plastic tote boxes.

I am not looking forward to January. I wish I could hibernate instead.

[Texascavers] New Year's festivities in Austin or Houston ?

2017-12-31 Thread David via Texascavers
I still have no plans to party NYE.

Up to about 5 p.m., I am frolicking in my rental storage unit in Brenham.
I doubt I will sleep in it tonight.

I have the house to myself in Arcola for the next 2 days, but I expect to
be thrown out by Wednesday ( hopefully for good this time ).

[ I should be living in my storage unit next week, but once work picks
back up, then I plan to live in cheap weekly motels in northwest Houston,
thru the spring. ]

Cheers. Happy New Year

Hopefully 2018, is the year that I dust off my old caving gear ( actually,
mostly new gear, but never used ). But my best guess is that it will more
likely happen in 2019. So realistically before my 55th birthday.

If you are near Arcola around 9 to 11 p.m. then text me

I will most likely drift off to sleep before midnight and wake up later to
realize I missed the hoopla.

The passage had whitewater rapids flowing into darkness below.  ( water always

I had assumed that cave was in the area above the town Chilpancingo in the

>From David Locklear

There is a tragic story in the news about an American tourist shot and killed
near Zihuatanejo.

The media is just trying to show that Mexico has gone crazy.

There is something very fishy about this story.

First, he was allegedly outside at 4 in the morning.   Second, he lived in
Mexico permanently in Tijuana.  Yet commuted to work in the US as a city
official.  He obviously knows Mexico better than most American tourist there.

I have been there before, twice.  It was around 2000, but have erased it
completely from my memory banks.  A former Houston caver owns a bed-n-breakfast
there.  His son manages it.   Everybody knows you stay inside after dark.
There are direct flights from Houston to Zihuatanejo.  It is not just some
point on a map.   It is a beautiful place.  I would love to go back, but I am
glad I saw it before the crime increased.  There are likely some excellent
caves within an hour drive of there.   In fact, the Number One cave on my
bucket list is just 2 hours from there - "Resumidero de Mixtlacingo."  Imagine
the Medina River sinking into a big hole and only one group of cavers has tried
to rappel into it only to find another waterfall into a dark abyss.  I was near
that caving area at the Mexpeleo held in 2005ish in Taxco al Viejo.

Anyways,

This victim was apparently staying at a ritzy motel.  It is hard to imagine he
really got shot near the motel, so if he was outside of the tourist zone at 4
am, he was probably doing something unsafe.  There are probably thousands of
rich people enjoying the holiday there, and probably a few dozen millionaires.

Meanwhile, 10 people were shot in Houston last week, even on Christmas Day.

Tonight and for the next three days, My wife and daughter are in Reynosa,
Mexico.  I am home alone near Arcola.  Reynosa is supposed to be one of the
most dangerous places in Mexico according to the news media.   She just called
and said she was eating delicious "gorditas."   They know to not leave the
house after dark.  Life should not be this complicated.   On one hand, it is my
job to protect my daughter.  But on the other, there were dozens of other ways
I would have prefered to spend NYE and my time off work.

I do hope to go on a road-trip to the Sierra Madres in 2018 in my Sequoia.  I
am concerned about the safety and security preparations for that, but I also
have to stay vigilent in Houston around ATMs and gas stations, and bank parking
lots.

[Texascavers] tourist in the news

2017-12-30 Thread David via Texascavers
>From David Locklear

There is a tragic story in the news about an American tourist shot and
killed near Zihuatanejo.

The media is just trying to show that Mexico has gone crazy.

There is something very fishy about this story.

First, he was allegedly outside at 4 in the morning. Second, he lived in
Mexico permanently in Tijuana. Yet commuted to work in the US as a city
official. He obviously knows Mexico better than most American tourist
there.

I have been there before, twice. It was around 2000, but have erased it
completely from my memory banks. A former Houston caver owns a
bed-n-breakfast there. His son manages it. Everybody knows you stay
inside after dark. There are direct flights from Houston to Zihuatanejo.
It is not just some point on a map. It is a beautiful place. I would

Re: [Texascavers] Texas Speleology Center

2017-12-29 Thread David via Texascavers
I can definitely clean out my rental storage unit and find something that
might be worthy of donating.

I have some old furniture, a nice old wood gun cabinet, some nature books,
an old small camp stove, lots of metal serving plates. 2 white-gas
lanterns, an old coffee table. 2 respectable old leather office lobby
chairs, a Canon printer/copier

I can eventually build a Linux desktop computer, once I have enough parts.
I think I have everything needed, but a power supply and an SSD.

I would rather see you all sell the old dusty stuff in a yard sale for $ 1,
than to let the storage auctioneers get it, only to throw it in a dumpster.

I have boxes and boxes full of junk items worth 5 cents in a yard sale.

I have a box of 50 Lexan tea glasses used once at our wedding in 2001.

If anyone knows the whereabouts of a large chopping block that disappearred
from the big event years ago in Kerrville, I would like to donate that.
Maybe wherever The Oztotl Circus Tent is stored. An equivalent one
retails for $ 90 in stores. Otherwise, I have a smaller chopping block, a
toaster oven, a hot-dog cooker, and 3 old sinks and a bookshelf.

I would have to haul it all from Brenham, in a trailer, I guess.

This is a pretty good idea. I am of the opinion though that the table
part takes up space in the box. You would probably be better off with a
big box like that for stuff and a 4 foot plastic top office table or a
folding 5 foot table (although I hate those folding tables). It gives
you more table space and more storage space in the box for less money.

[Texascavers] A mobile-camp-kitchen idea.

2017-12-29 Thread David via Texascavers
LOEW's Store has a large heavy-duty plastic box on wheels
that has a unique feature.

Upon opening it, it transforms into a small workbench.

A creative caver could modify this in such a way that it would make a
super-quick fold-out kitchen.

All the metal pots and pans and utensils would be stored below and a
lightweight cutting board could be placed on top.

You could easily prepare food for 10 people with this. And if you had
room for two or three of them, even more expedtion-like food preparation
could be done.

The drawbacks are that it far heavier that a fold-out Coleman-style
kitchen, and work-table is small and it is $ 170 plus tax.

Brand: Irwin
Model: Mobile Command Center

You could also make a dedicated Medical Station, or a dedicated internet
station, or maybe prop up a tv for some kind of remote presentation.

The main feature is quick-setup

As far as New Year's Eve goes,

I have to work Friday, so all the fuss that I made last week about a

[Texascavers] NSS Party ?

2017-12-28 Thread David via Texascavers
>From David Locklear

Anybody from central Texas or Houston area going to the NSS Party ?

Getting to the party is not that crazy. It is the drive back, that would
kill me.

I could possibly leave Thursday after lunch from Houston.

However, I am pretty sure I have maxxed out my credit card.

As of 10:30 p.m., I am about to take a long power-nap inside my rental
storage unit in Brenham. I just now discovered a 6 foot person can sleep
in a fetal position inside of a Gorilla Rack.

I have to work Thursday morning in Houston.

Once I am done with work, and any obligations with my daughter, I "desire"
to hit the road.

If the Huntsville road-trip idea fails ( which I assume it will ), then I
"might" go to Reynosa, Mexico to celebrate New Years with my daughter and
my simpleton in-laws.

However, I have not spoken to the estranged-wife about that, and hope I
don't ever see her again.

The rest is this post is personal cr*p. Some people enjoy reading others
dirty laundry

I just spent the past 3 days intensely doing the traditional secular
Christmas thing, kissing *ss and being nice to extremely j*rkw*d family and
half-family.I do not hope lightening strikes most of those people, but
I do I hope I never have to suffer being in the same room with them again.
I had to disown at least 6 of them after Christmas Day dinner, not
including the estranged-wife and only brother who each deserved special
trophies for going unexpected psych*.

In summary, I need a vacation pretty bad.

But I am afraid I will end up staying home and just playing on the computer.

Santa brought me a new pocket-knife and a nice parka which I am wearing
now, and some wood that I used earlier this evening to expand the 2nd floor
of my rental storage unit.

My daughter got a really nice wetsuit suitable for a thru-trip in
Honeycreek. And my 3 year old half-nephew got a real caving helmet (
brand TomTom )

[Texascavers] Just reminscing - part 2 of 3

2017-12-24 Thread David via Texascavers
I left out the part that I was renting a room in Wild Bill Rupley's
townhome in west Houston. I am sure he regrets that. Wild Bill was still
working in his grandfather's fur-coat business ( yes, In Houston if you can
fathom that ) That is his story to tell. It is my theory, that he helped
fuel the campfire rumors then that maybe some of my marbles were slightly
loose.

Anyways,

Rolf Adams and his girlfriend Anne agreed to meet me at Terry Raines' ranch
around mid-December ( I think ). I just recall a fuzzy memory of a
dome-shaped wooden structure with a grand piano and some old clutter. I
think that might have been my first real formal introduction to Terry
Raines, although I had met him and read dozens of his adventures. It was
dark when I got there, and I think that I had spent an hour just trying to
find his house.

I recall a female caver maybe renting a bungalow there that was maybe a
Jazzercize instructor ??
She was good-looking. I forgot her name 25 years ago.

I arrived there from Houston in "The Speleo-Stationwagon." A 1972 Ford
Country Squire with a 1976 400 cu in ( actually 6.6 liters ) V8 that I had
proudly installed by myself. The money and time that I spent on that car
over a two-year period was way way beyond super-retarded. But in those
days, I could not afford an Isuzu Trooper or other fancy SUVs that cavers
were purchasing. I had purchased it for $ 200 from my grandpa in 1987 and
it was my first car. So I had some really weird sentimental attachment to
it, partly because he and I had years of memories in it prior to that. It
once had an 8-track player mounted to the floor, and a CB-radio.

Upon arriving at Terry's ranch house, things were quite chaotic.Terry
was very intensely preoccupied with the finishing touches of his newest
book - one that he was hoping to present two weeks later at the First
Mexpeleo in Ciudad Valles, entitled - "The Caves of Mexico."

Terry quickly showed me the rough draft, and I can't tell you here what my
first impression was. But it was or would have been today the equivalent
of 100 Wikipedia articles on the major caves of Mexico - had he had some
assistance and more time ro work on it.

The 2 Aussies were no where near ready to leave and suggested waiting
another day - maybe something to do with their newly acquired beater jalopy
- a Datsun pickup ( $ 400 ?? ) [ ~ 1977 ]

So I drove into San Marcos to get more supplies. There, suddenly my
drive-shaft fell off after the rear U-Joint shattered.I spent most of
the night by myself in a parking lot of AutoZone in San Marcos fixing
that. ( no internet or cell-phone )

I drove exhausted back to Terry's ranch only to break the front U-joint
about a half-mile from his ranch.

Someone claimed you need to replace both U-Joints. I have no memory of
how I fixed that or even if I did.

It must have been morning time by the time I made contact with the Aussies
that I had a unexpected setback. I was so wiped out.

The rest of that day and the next gets very fuzzy, but wherever I abandoned
The Speleo-Stationwagon . was across the street from Nancy Weaver's
house.

Maybe she has a better memory of that than I do. She was not a happy
camper, as I think it was abandoned there 3 weeks ( or maybe 3 months ??
). Plus it was in a fairly ugly state of modification at that point.
Meaning, it belonged in a junk-yard crusher.

I guess the 2 Aussies and I and the Datsun pickup left Terry's ranch
uneventfully. I rode in the back of the camper in a fetal position in a
space not any bigger than a large suitcase while breathing toxic fumes.

I am guessing that was my 2nd of four times to cross the border by car at
Matamoros.

We drove 18 painful hours non-stop to a beach just outside a very tiny town
called Nautla in the northern part of the state of Veracuz.

We camped alone on a very secluded remote beach with no worries whatsoever
of being beheaded by a cartel member. We never saw anybody there.
Unfortunately, we slept the whole 5 hours that we were there and never saw
the pretty beach in the daylight, except we probably left just after
sunrise. I doubt I pitched a tent, but they did.

https://goo.gl/maps/AvaNxXw5TCH2

That area sure looks very tourist-friendly on the Google map link above
after just 28 years.

Our next stop was a quick lunch at a taqueria in Orizaba where we quickly
did our final shopping. At that point, I recall wasting money, that I
would need later. Had I just had about $ 40 more, I would have managed the
trip without any bad memories.

We eventually arrived in the capital of the state of Puebla, and traffic
was insane - much worse than other small cities I had visited. Volkswagen
beetle bug-taxis by the hundreds. All white ??

Then we continued south towards the rural base-camp area that I can only
assume was an "ejido."

I think we set up camp in the dark, however we had very little in the form
of camping gear.

I seem to recall waking up in a giant hilly pasture

It must have been a very fuzzy memory because 1989 was 28 years ago.

Rolf Adams was a fantastic caver and all around really nice guy. I had the
pleasure of caving with him several times, including at Cueva Cheve in 1989.
There is a photo of Rolf, Noel Sloan and me on the cover of the NSS history

I have ever told this whole story - at least not in detail - just in parts.

Background:   Australian caver Rolf Adams ( who would later drown in Florida
scuba training for a caving expedition ) was hanging out in Austin
semi-permanently caving full-time..  He had finished his math studies at a
university in Australia and had climbed El Capitan and sone lots of caving.
He was the most technical caver that I had ever met, and I assumed he could
lead or climb as good as Alejandro Villagomez.   He and I had caved previously
once over Thanksgiving in The El Cielo, mostly ridgewalking camping, swimming
and taking in the Huastecan culture.

[ Sidenote:   I actually sincerely believed his name was Wallaby Adams until
reading his obituary in the NSS News two years later. ]

In November of 89, I was laid-off from a civil engineering company where I
worked drafting on mylar with ink pens. and Leroy set roads ( new suburban
boulevards ).   I had never been laid off.   In those days, unlike today, I was
a total moron, and I had no earthly idea what it meant to be laid off.   In my
case, I had an extreme stroke of luck ( for once ) in that when I arrived at
The Texas Unemployment Office, my bosse's boss was in line right next to me.

So I left Houston and went to the UT Grotto meeting.   ( In those days, still
being an A.S.S. caver, I referred to it as the "t.u. Grotto." )

Rolf was there with his girlfriend from Australia.  He introduced her as Dr.
Anne Gray.    She was a cute blonde with long frizzy hair about 25 years old.
[I think this might be her on Facebook

https://www.facebook.com/anne.gray.144 ]

Rolf announced he was heading on a ridgewalking adventure near Tehuacan, Puebla
in search of the highest cave entrance in the western hemisphere.

I think our remote spot is now a tourist site:

San Bernardino Lagunas
Vicente Guerrero, Puebla, Mexico

Some Austin cavers found a tiny yellow beat-up Datsun pickup with camper-shell
on the back.

Rolf was content to have me tag along, but unknown to me, his girlfriend had
possibly been wanting a simple quite trip with just the two of them.   She did
not know me at all, like Rolf did.  And she and I never hit it off.   In
hindsight, I should have bailed on them, at some point before reaching Puebla.
But they had no business travelling alone like that where they were going.

My vote for an water proof case is the Pelican box, fortunately Harbor
Freight has the Apache brand for about 1/3rd the cost. The small one
starting at $15. They seem to be well constructed and made of a good grade
plastic, a good rubber seal and a vent valve. They even have the pluck foam
insert. Steve

There are some gloves that I have been wanting for months at Northern Tool
Company store - brand "Premium Defense." But they are $ 30 plus tax.

They are on sale for $ 5 plus tax now till supplies run out.

   www.bigtimeproducts.net

The store also has moving blankets on sale, and who doesn't need a moving
blanket.

Did I tell you that I helped a little old lady who got mugged at the Target
Store ? Ladies be careful if you shop near Houston. K*trina refugees are
lurking in the shadows here after dark.

If you want to keep things protected and dry, the best choice is usually the
Curtec drum <http://onrope1.com/miscellaneous/curtec-darren-drum-6.4-liter/>
(commonly called Darren drum). These are lightweight, waterproof, very robust,
and can be used as camp seats as well as ferried through sumps. I carry one in

From David Locklear,

I shopped hard and analyzed each ammo can that I could find in stores, and the
winner was the one shown below:

    Kobalt # 0666039

For $ 9.98 ( $ 10.80 with tax in Texas )

The other reasonable choices were the metal can, the olive-green heavy-duty
plastic one ( sold at Northern Tool ), or the white or orange heavy-duty
plastic ( sold in the marine section of Academy ).

I had a fancy one already, (made of aluminum ), but did not see that in stores,
and that was not what I was looking for this time.

This one is strictly for road-trips, and will have all those small things you
need on a road-trip, similar to a caver's pack.   In fact this ammo can is
suitable for caving, where you need to protect something from dust and
humidity.

I expect this ammo can to last many years.  The plastic hinge on the lid should
be the first thing to fail.

This ammo can will eventually get covered in Gorilla duct-tape and then some
caving stickers.

[Texascavers] NSS Party ?

2017-12-22 Thread David via Texascavers
>From David Locklear

I am just starting to brainstorm ideas since my Sierra Madre road-trip
appears to have imploded.

I have to be in Sugarland at 1 a.m.
on Sunday ( meaning that is when I will be off work and ready for bed )

So I can leave Sugarland in my Sequoia on Sunday morning.

Here is a list of ideas:

1 ) Stay home and suffer
2 ) Take a 2-1/2 day bus ride into central Mexico and relax in a motel in
the mountains and absorb the culture.
3 ) Go to the NSS Party
4 ) just go on a normal Texas road-trip, maybe camp at Seminole Canyon or
swim at Lake Balmorhhea.
5 ) or I could do what 2 million other Houstonians do at Christmas, and
that is borrow money and donate it to a casino in Lake Charles.
6 ) or I could visit relatives
( feels like being flogged )

7) spend the $ on computer upgrades

8) any better ideas ?
