their reach is enormous AND THEY HELP YOU DEVELOP YOUR ARTICLE. So anyone
interested in being a public intellectual should consider them. Two colleagues

widely disseminated — they watch for that, and push articles into the
commercial news bureaus. No money involved, but your stuff gets out in

I remember being engrossed in the rescue/recovery article that reported the two

have read it 30 times. Each time inserting myself into a different
participants role. That article taught me more about caving and the commitment
to each other cavers accept and entrust to one another. I felt every emotion
un the spectrum as i recreated in my minds eye what each must felt, endured and
was able to compartmentalize so they could do what was necessary. I wss amazed
at the compassion and selflessness of those who stayed to keep the survivor's
mental focus distracted from his friends fate and focused on his own survival.
And the tender extraction of the boy who was taken from this life. A single
emotion was shared be me in each rendition as i transported from one
perspective to another. Thst emotion was love and as it made weep as i am now
in hopes that God forbid i ever find myself involved in any perspective of a
similar circumstance. If i do, I know one thing for sure. I will shed no tear
until I have completed the responsibility that drew me to such a scenario. And
if an onlooker were to see me crying he would most likely surmise that sadness
had overcome me. He would be mistaken. I would be crying because of gratitude
as i am now. I'm so blessed and more thankful for finding this group of people
who except everyone without reserve and watch over each other as a member of
their family. No where on God's earth is anyone so important to so many for
any other reason than that you exist. I makes real what most can only
conceptualize. You are my brother and we take responsibility for our brothers.

Cave Pearls of Meghalaya: A Cave Inventory Covering the Jaintia Hills,

Arbenz. By the editor, Matzendorf, Switzerland; 2012. ISBN 978-3-033-03637-6.

Meghalaya, an Indian state sandwiched between Assam to the north and Bangladesh
to the south, is the wettest place on earth. Two towns in its karst receive
over ten meters of monsoon rains every year. Rain makes caves. Until the early
1990s, only a couple of caves more than a kilometer long were known in India.
Then various foreign cavers, mainly from Europe, and the Meghalaya Adventurers
Association formed the Caving in the Abode of the Clouds Project and started
systematically exploring and surveying caves in Meghalaya. In 2006, their
interest was drawn to the Pala range of hills, where a village headman claimed
that Krem Tyngheng was 20 kilometers long. Another local, whose wide knowledge
of the area was perhaps due to his having wives in seven villages, claimed that
the cave ran all the way through the hills. It turned out that they were both
absolutely right.

This book, edited and largely written by Swiss caver Thomas Arbenz, chief
cartographer for the project since 2002, is another of those beautifully
produced and lavishly illustrated reports that seem to come almost exclusively
from Europe. Following an overview of the geology and geography of the area,
there are chapters on the expeditions of 2010, 2011, and 2012, which focused
entirely on the area covered by this book, followed by three chapters on the
cave biology of the area. Is there a shorter binomial in all of biology than
the bat Ia io? Then the "inventory" starts on page 108. All the large and small
caves are described, with the longest section, 28 pages, on the 21.25-kilometer
Tyngheng–Dieng Jem System. There are regional line plots of the caves
superimposed on aerial images, as well as nicely drawn detailed maps of all but
the least significant caves. Just a couple of the maps include profiles; these
are horizontal river caves, explored, needless to say, during the dry season.
Only samples of the maps are printed for the longest caves, with six full maps
as PDF files on the disk inside the back cover. The PDFs can be a bit difficult
to navigate on screen, because they have to be viewed at nearly actual size to
see the rich detail and they are up to about 100 inches square. But they're
still a lot better than an 88-square-foot paper map, if such a thing could even
be made.

A bit pricey by the time the heavy book is mailed from Switzerland, but a model
project report and valuable reference. Buy it so that Arbenz can afford to
publish volume 2.—Bill Mixon

[Texascavers] Possible short web dropout for TSS website

2017-01-04 Thread Katherine Arens via Texascavers
The Texas Speleological Survey is moving its website to a new host. Forgive
any possible outages over the next 48 hours — it is random how long the URL
takes to transfer.
At that time, we hope to be able to restore the missing stats pages, too.
Patience, y’all, please.

"criticism" & "opinion". However, novices (volunteers who stepped up to do a
job when no one else would) aren't usually trained or skilled or ready to deal
with criticism. It can be counterproductive.

At TCR typically I ask critics to step up and help solve whatever they think
isn't happening to their expectation. One of two things happens; they step up
and do something -or- they shut up and do nothing. In my experience the vast
majority of complainers choose the latter.

At TCR, lots of people voice ideas about how it -should- be done, and I get
tons of criticism of how "it got done wrong", or how "it should be done in the
future" or how "it was done better in the past". Plenty of suggestions, oodles
of constructive ideas. But when it come time for those same volunteers to step
up and stand behind their suggestions and help - very very few ever follow
through. Ever. They usually disappear with the words "how about helping out
then?" The ones that actually see the job done are the ones who want it done
and do it.

Criticism can be constructive, such as when someone expects it or asks for it.
Or the critic is willing to step in and help firsthand, which is usually
welcomed. Especially useful are wisdom and experience. Otherwise it's just
opinion.

What is gong on here? Why is it that every few years there is a Texas Caver

There is lots of talk about the Texas Caver. From the outset, there seems to
have been some confusion regarding the difference between good journalism and
nice graphic arts. Unfortunately, neither has been regularly in evidence.
Maybe I've missed it, but I can't recall anyone praising the Caver for high
quality journalism or the reliability of production. The editor has a few
passionate defenders who are willing to do battle with any and all detractors,
but the current editorial has now acknowledged what has been evident for
several years.

The coming transition is an opportunity to learn from previous mistakes. Texas
cavers appreciate good grammar, proper spelling, and nice graphics but, failing
that, are willing to forgive a lot if the Caver shows signs of having been
carefully crafted with attention to detail: nice photographs properly
captioned and credited; articles well laid out with all elements present; no
space used as a personal blog; and perhaps most importantly, timely production.

“Bringing It All Back Home: Austin in The Sixites— 50 Years After”
Thur, Oct. 13 | 3:30 p.m.-5:00 p.m. | PAI 3.02

A talk by
Professor Doug Rossinow, University of Oslo
author of the acclaimed book: The Politics of Authenticity: Liberalism,
Christianity, and the New Left

Austin was a major center of youth protest and dissident culture in the 1960s
-- a radical center with a distinctive Texas identity. Civil rights agitation,
dissident religion, peace mobilization, leftist radicalism, women's liberation,
and a unique underground culture: it all happened here, and most of all at UT.
Soon it will be fifty years since the world-shaking year 1968. Looking back
with the benefit of a half-century’s perspective, Professor Rossinow will
reflect on the significance of the 1960s for today, and on what Austin's
Sixties tells us about that era.

That led me to a free Windows program, named youtube-dl.exe (source code also

Aubri, thanks for the additional information on the presentation made a few

the process. Apparently Periscope does not currently support computers with
large screens, but it does support folks with either an IOS or Android device,
mostly smart phones plus some tablets. If they can figure out how to support
desktop computers like PCs, Macs and Linux it will then be available to many,
many more folks.

I found this youtube explanation that might be of interest to cavers without
smart phones and iPads during the exact time the broadcast is "live", although
you would still need such a device to display it on your "full size" computer
screen. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99rxZKdzDkM]. There are also other
methods discussed on youtube that are specific to certain computers and
browsers that can install certain browser extensions, but some of these may be
out of date now as it appears that FB wants to keep control of this method of
broadcast. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jrEhi7kTN8],
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3JqAcALR0c] &
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLnXIjRzAJ4].

I find the NSS Webinar presentations much more useful, and they are archived in
a manner that makes them available to a much larger audience 24/7.

Good news everyone, the excellent presentation that Fernando gave on his
experience as an explorer on the 2016 PESH Expedition was not only broadcast
live on Periscope, it is archived indefinitely on Periscope.

Even better, Periscope can be accessed from most internet connected devices.
This includes your regular home computer, regardless of operating system. While
for most of us it's easier to just install the app, alternately you can just as
easily go to:
www.periscope.tv/utgrotto

If you just want to watch, you don't need to join or download or any such
hassle. That's only if you want to be able to take advantage of all the
features offered.

When you land on our Periscope page it shows the most recent broadcast by
default, however you can scroll down to see older broadcasts.

Currently, you could watch:

8/3/2016 (46:50)
Fernando Hernandez presents on this years exploration in Sistema Huatla.

7/6/2016 (19:18)
Peter Sprouse on connections in Quintana Roo MX

7/6/2016 (8:09)
Jim Kennedy on the new gate at Powell's Cave

6/29/2016 (20:42)
Ben Hutchens presents on recent caving in Guatemala!

6/1/2016 (25:00)
Dr. Jean Krejca speaking on sump diving exploration efforts in CM, the 6th
longest cave in Texas!

Prior to sometime in late May, Periscope broadcasts were only available for 24
hours, and then they "expired".

[Texascavers] some tiny hidden movies on Amazon.com: for those of you who were in Brno

2016-08-01 Thread Katherine Arens via Texascavers
Hey,
stuck in the bowels of Amazon.com ’s streaming movies are a
set of nature/science films by the Austrian TV Station (ORF). They’re about 50
minutes apiece. If you’re a Prime member, some are free; if not, the cheapest
ones are .99.
Among the free ones are some that might be of interest to cavers who were in
Moravia (Brno), because you probably saw some of this. All in English
(sometimes the title is in German, they didn’t redo those). .

Serious cool is https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H8UZ0CI/ref=dv_web_wtls_list_pr_20
= St, Stephen’s, the Living Cathedral.
"The most astonishing natural area in Austria is St. Stephens Cathedral in
Vienna. Between the roof tiles, at stone gargoyles and in many a damp crevice,
the 850 year-old cathedral reveals itself as a botanical and zoological garden.
“
What’s cool about this is that it’s about the flora and fauna of the cathedral,
including its cave bugs in the catacombs. Martins, falcons, mice, trees
growing out of the roof, silkworms.

The Black Mountain
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H8V20A2/ref=dv_web_wtls_list_pr_22
"Mount Grossglockner towers above the Tauern massif like a sentinel over an
Alpine paradise of nature. Georg Riha portrays the Austrian Alps' highest
summit using state-of- the-art techniques. “
If any of you were near Eisriesenwelt, this is that area of mountains.

The Karst: Life Between Heaven and Hell
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H8V0OG4/ref=dv_web_wtls_list_pr_21
"A scraggy land of harsh beauty but full of deception as well. This film
explores the hidden charms of the stony cliffs along the Gulf of Trieste, the
original home of the white horses from Lipica and portrays the inhabitants of
this Karst region, who are simple people, deeply affected by the vicissitudes
of European history and the hardships of life.”

This is down in the dolomites. Lots of limestone karst landscapes in Slovenia,
near Trieste to Ljubliana — really nice photography, and does explain what it
means to live on Karst. (Doline pronounced DOUGH-LINE, but that might be
british).

If you get to the series, there are others. They’re old school docs, but the
photography is just gorgeous, and they have decent scripts, as these things go.
 Austrian PBS.
FOR EXAMPLE: I haven’t see the one on Vienna’s Water yet, but their system a
tech marvel and could be interesting: They aquaduct the water in from about
200 miles away, from the mountains, and still have some of the best city water
anywhere because of it. It’s not free; the danube one might also be
interesting.

On Netflix, the “Great Museum” is the winner- the art history of museum in
Vienna, its renovation.

Nothing epic here; just some short freebees or cheapies for a boring evening.

The University of Texas at Austin invites you to attend the 37th Annual Short
Course on Grouting Fundamentals.

Since 1979 the 5-day Grouting Fundamentals and Current Practice course has
covered pressure grouting as a method to improve geotechnical characteristics
of soils and rock masses, with special focus on mechanisms, theories, and
practical applications of grouting to ground densification and strengthening,
permeability reduction and groundwater cutoffs.

Major topics covered include:

  * Procedures for cement and chemical
grouting[http://staticapp.icpsc.com/icp/loadimage.php/mogile/299735/c4a9b7168ce14f0f55615171c4b08fea/image/jpeg]
  * Grouting of rock under dams
  * Groundwater cutoffs and composite seepage barriers
  * Grouting of rock anchors and micropiles
  * Jet grouting, compensation grouting, permeation grouting, compaction
grouting
  *   Grouting for underground structures
  * Overburden and rock drilling methods
  *   Instrumentation and monitoring

A half-day field demonstration is included in the curriculum, focusing on
compaction and permeation grouting, penetration of ultrafine cements, hydraulic
fracturing, computer monitoring, grout mixing, uses of cellular grouts,
overburden drilling methods, grouting of rock anchors, and use of borehole
packers.

Who should attend this program:
The course is intended for Owners, Regulators, Consultants and Contractors
having interest in the applications of pressure grouting to a broad array of
geo-structural construction and remediation techniques. The course is also
intended for petroleum engineering personnel involved in well drilling and

Justin Shaw has kindly volunteered to oversee the recording and broadcasting.

This best picture I know of is in a Texas Caver in 1980 ( plus or minus 4 years

I have never heard any public or private chatter about this cave except for the

Kiwi Sink is a far more productive endeavor for cavers. I hope I can take

Re: [Texascavers] Austin Caverns

2014-12-05 Thread Katherine Arens via Texascavers
heather, katie again
I was actually IN Austin caverns not too long before the washout/closing. That
old map reflects areas that are completely silted shut to the depth of feet,
and the big water pipe in it was being washed under. Main drop in about half
of goat cave (manhole). Stoop passage on top of the silt. And i KNOW that
william thinks it can’t be excavated again, or did. It’s dicey, actually kind
of scary. and it can’t have gotten better with the apartment house runoff
going into the storm drain. Let me know if you want william to call you
tomorrow, and what time/number.

is it too unstable?
But really, any information we can get from people who've actually been in the

It wasn't a convention you're thinking of. It had to be the Luckenbach World's
Fair 1975. Bill Elliott won the Laughing Contest there (see his attached story
and a great photo of him accepting the trophy from Slim Pickens).

Excerpt from Bill's story: So, I drove my old Chevy 4x4 down there and when I
arrived I immediately bumped into cavers from Austin—Charlie Loving, Gil
Ediger, Don Broussard, and lots of others. We wandered around, drank beer, and
sampled the food at the booths on the grounds.

Lowgun

Bill sent it to a bunch of us in June 2013:

I thought that some of you might enjoy the attached personal account from my
glorious past. If you don't enjoy well just throw it away.

Thanks,
