Austin cavers, the TCMA is looking for someone to haul its new trailer from
Ediger's house to CWAN by Friday. It's heading to San Antonio afterwards, so no
need to bring it back. Contact me offline if you have a hitch and are willing
to help out. Thanks in advance.

I was in a nursing home cafeteria today, making a 5 minute visit to an ill
cousin.

An 83 year old guy at the table who was in poor health would not shut up
and just kept rambling about whatever was on his mind. He seemed to have
some bizarre need to share his thoughts, and there was not a soul in the
building willing to listen to him.

I was just about to leave, when he started rambling about spelunking in
Indiana caves.

I only asked him to tell me more.

He wasn't a caver, but I could tell that he could talk about caves on and
on. He said his dad was one of the spectators at the Floyd Collins
rescue. He said he had been spelunking about 20 times when he was a
teenager with a carbide lamp that a friend ( who he said was a real
spelunker from Bloomington ) had loaned him, but he did not consider
himself a spelunker. He had a reliable memory of all the commercial caves
in that cave region. But I couldn't stay. He would probably enjoy a
video-taped interview.

My memories of interviews with elderly people in nursing homes...consists of
great tales of caves with entrances big enough to ride a horse and wagon full
of Gold bars....it went on for miles and connects to Carlsbad Caverns at some
deep level... now if they could just remember where it was located?
Lots of weekends hiking the West Texas desert on wild goose chases...

I visited a cave in Oklahoma the owners called Horse Thief Cave. Story was
that horse thieves used the cave to run horses to a town 15 miles away. If
they did none of the horses was over 3’ tall and we never found the passage
leading to town. If memory serves the cave was about 300’. Caves are always
fun to romanticize and some of those stories become real in time, especially
when you’re 83!

I’ve heard some tall tales about Texas caves but the best one that I heard was
about a transmutator cave in Kentucky – and this one is true. The farmer told
me his dog chased a raccoon into a cave and got lost. About two weeks later,
the dog emerged from another cave more than five miles away and had turned into
a pig. The farmer showed me the pig (yes, it was really a pig) and the way he
knew it was his dog was that the pig liked the same brand of dog food, answered
to the same name (Arnold) and would even sleep in the same dog house. I think
the guy had separation issues.

Reminds me of the difference between bedtime stories in the north verses the
south. In the north, the bed time stories start out with “Once upon a time” and
end with “They lived happily ever after.” In the south, they start with a “You
ain’t gon’a believe this $hi# and end with “That’s how Uncle Kermit lost his
eye.”

The deadline is fast approaching for the next issue of Texas Caver. Articles
and photos are still needed.

I will be completely out of reach for about two weeks - so get your
articles in and pressure and harass each other.

Unfortunately we didn't get photos of the party at Geary's house Sunday, but
the roof was breached for the first time in Schindel party history! J
Thanks to all who came or sent bon voyage messages.

Galen Falgout has found a couple of portable buildings in Austin in pretty
good shape. One is 10x20 the other is 12x20 that are free but need moving
forthwith. The last time I had buildings moved I called Morgan Buildings
and they gave me the name of a guy who can move them. And, no, I don't want
to be a part of it. You're on your own.
