Good morning cavers!
I hope you're getting all your "weekend chores" done around the house for
this weekend and next, because next weekend is the TSA Spring Convention
and I hope to see all of you there!
The convention begins Friday evening, May 2 at Cave without a Name in
Boerne and ends on Sunday, May 4. The informational talks are held INSIDE
the cave on May 3. The lineup is awesome and listed below.

2014 Huautla Expedition
Bill spent for the month of April in Huautla, and will be presenting their
discoveries and achievements. Cavers from five countries (USA, Canada,
Mexico, Australia, Romania), explored the cave, carried The Explorers Club
flag, and were an official project of the NSS.

Kiwi Sink
An introduction to the discovery and subsequent digging into Kiwi Sink.
First, we used a loader/backhoe until it got too deep, then used hand
digging to fill up barrels to be winched up. We found some real cave as a
result, the cave dig continues.

The Jaguar Paw System: a new mega-maze in Quintana Roo
Cavers of the Paamul Grotto cut a jungle trail through a long segment of
collapsed cave passage. With over 15 km mapped so far in multiple segments,
the full extent of this system won't be known for years.

Recent LIDAR Mapping of Some Major Texas Bat Caves
The latest accomplishment in our continued research into the large Mexican
free-tailed bat roosts of central Texas has been the detailed LIDAR mapping
spearheaded by Dr. Nicolay Hristov of the Center for Design Innovation at
Winston-Salem State University. To date, Bracken Bat Cave, James River Bat
Cave, Davis Blowout Cave, and Ney Cave are mostly completed. We’ll show
samples of the scans, compare them to the old-school paper maps, and
discuss the conservation and research potential of this project, including
our future plans.

A 10 minute video done by Italian cavers about a direct aid climb out of
Sotano de las Golondrinas, up the wall, from the floor to the entrance and
out—an amazing feat. This will be the first showing of this video in the US!

Caving Contributions to the 'Cradle of Humankind.'
A brief overview and discussion of the contributions of caving to the
discovery of early hominid fossils within the Rising Star Cave System
within South Africa's Cradle of Humankind. This is part of an ongoing
excavation deep within the system that began in November 2013 through the
joint auspices of the University of the Witwatersrand and National
Geographic Society.

Goodenough - Exploring the Depths of a Prolific Texas Spring
Hear a brief history of this underwater tributary of the Rio Grande, and
experience the tale of its record-setting deep exploration by the GSEP
(Goodenough Springs Exploration Project). Learn about the GSEP's ongoing
research project to identify the origin of Goodenough's water source. Dive
team members will be available after the presentation to answer questions
and provide further information.

Bustamante cave exploration ACEAC2014
A talk about the results of exploration in Bustamante cave. With 9 trips in
one year, exploration of the cave is slow but very detail oriented. The
cavers have discovered many small entrance pits under the floor of the
"paso de la muerte" area. They are close to finishing planned exploration
but need help to do the survey, since the Tourism Secretary of Nuevo Leon
has new projects to do inside of this cave.
Again, this should be a great convention. Roger Moore, with the support of
cave owner Tom Summers, has arranged for great parties (a band on Saturday,
a musical party on Friday night) and we will have all the usual fun stuff
(the "big feed", kegs of Shiner, the TCMA auction, vertical troubleshooting
courtesy of GGG and David Ochel, etc).
I can't wait to see you all next weekend!

Folks,
Just a reminder that we're having a party in honor of Jill Orr leaving for the
socialist wonderland of France in a few days. The party starts at 4 pm at the
Schindel's house. This is a pot luck and we have meat for the grill along with
some adult and non-adult beverages. Bring something to go along if you like.
Please don't spice your dish using the new Colorado State Herb.
In light of the party and by popular demand from previous party goers, we are
suspending the rule regarding getting on the roof for this one special
occasion. I warn you that a metal roof and pollen is a pretty slick combination
so we may have a contest to see who can stay on the roof the longest (bring
your first aid kits, crutches and SAM splints).
In addition, there may be some Dutch Oven Dessert Debauchery this evening and
Sue and Aspen have made some Creme De menthe brownies (which are always
outstanding). Hope you can make it to this most outstanding Fiesta Social Event
of the year.

Registration for the 6th International Workshop on Ice Caves (IWIC-VI) is open
but the time for discount registration ends this week. Prices go up on
Saturday, May 3rd! You can registration either on-line or by mail-in forms at
http://www.iwic-vi.org/.
Remember, IWIC registration includes the cost of all lunches and dinners to
maximize the time everyone is learning, working, and playing together. If you
stay at the conference hotel, your breakfast is included with your room fee.
The conference will focus on all aspects of study involving caves with ice
deposits and caves formed in ice, including paleoclimatology, cave
microclimates, hydrology and crystallography, modern and paleo fauna, among
other topics.
IWIC-VI is hosted by the US National Cave and Karst Research Institute, with
generous cooperation from members of the US National Speleological Society, and
is a conference series of the International Union of Speleology's Commission on
Glacier, Firn, and Ice Caves.

For those of you interested in helping lead the Wild Cave Tours at Colorado
Bend, the park is holding some guide training sessions in the next few
weeks. They're also particularly interested in finding guides to help lead
Wild Cave Tours for National Trails Day on June 7. Will and I have both
done the training and have already led a tour in the park. We're also

State Park focused on leading Wild Cave Tours.

To jump start this process, we would like to have you come out in the near
future. During your visit, we will discuss expectations of volunteers, the
TPWD mission, the cave tour activity, and many more topics that are
important for leading visitors on a cave tour. In addition, we will do
some caving in our tour caves to give you an idea of what to expect. We
are expecting a busy spring and have multiple opportunities for you to
experience a Wild Cave Tour.

Are you ready for an underground adventure?
We are looking for motivated individuals to assist the park in giving Wild
Cave Tours to visitors.
No caving experience necessary.
We will train you in caving techniques and safety. You will be provided
interpretive materials related to geology, history, caving exploration, and
other essential knowledge to fully prepare you to give a memorable cave
tour.
You will have an opportunity to shadow an experienced guide until you are
ready to lead a tour. An official cave tour handbook will be provided to
help you prepare a program. But you will be given the freedom to make the
cave tour your own.
Some caves require you to work in confined spaces.
Whether you can come out once a year, or once a month, we would love to
have you on our team. Cave tours are primarily on weekends.
